why do you hate your own music so much?

Nepenthe 09-24-2009 01:31 AM

its never good to enjoy your own music too much. you have to be your harshest critic you know.

McP3000 09-24-2009 01:32 AM

thats retarded though you should only make music you love

Nepenthe 09-24-2009 01:33 AM

theres a difference between loving something and thinking its as good as it can be

McP3000 09-24-2009 01:34 AM

i guess thats true, i guess i took the harshest critic comment to the wrong extreme

Nepenthe 09-24-2009 01:35 AM

that was good elim. probably the most 'professional' sounding track of yours ive heard. whether thats due to the actual music or the quality of production idk, but its true nonetheless.

Carl Sagan 09-24-2009 01:36 AM

i think its because there isnt that much in the mix and the levels are a bit higher

Nepenthe 09-24-2009 01:37 AM
i guess thats true, i guess i took the harshest critic comment to the wrong extreme
basically i mean you just have to be able to find the flaws in your music. sometimes it can be easy to just love something youve done and think its perfect, when theres always something about it that can be made better.
i think its because there isnt that much in the mix and the levels are a bit higher
yeah, and your sound selection was alot better too. those were all excellent pads and fx.

Carl Sagan 09-24-2009 01:50 AM

yeah them synth pads is silky smooth

r&m needs a lyrics thread

Indeed, but those who promote their music saying "hey, here's some complete shit I made earlier" seem to be looking for reassurance that it's not and perpetuating some holier then thou dissatisfied artist attitude.

It's good to be critical, of course. But, a little ego and personality about promoting it isn't an unhealthy thing either. Then there is Aaron.

Carl Sagan 09-24-2009 01:54 AM

maybe i'll throw together some lousy ep just like the old days

Nepenthe 09-24-2009 02:01 AM

sounds good dude. not much i can find to improve from a production standpoint right now, but i cant really turn it up too loud right now. do you mess around with compression at all? depending on what youve done, if anything, with the compression you might be able to get it to sound a bit more... idk, compact? i guess thats a good word. the higher notes and the slide on the main guitar are a bit louder than the rest of the notes and the backing guitar and drum, which you could clean up with compression. the drums are at about the right level to just be heard in the background, but you might want to try bringing the backing guitar up a bit. the main guitar might be a tad too loud (im assuming the samples are supposed to be the centerpiece), but its mainly just those high notes and the slide, which could be fixed up with the proper compression like i mentioned.

its good though man. the compression thing i was saying you might be able to improve is a really really minor thing, but its worth messing around with if youve got the dedication for it.

also, its not something to improve upon, but you might try messing with panning left and right on the samples, as they switch. might sound cool.

Lucky I'm subtle in my promotion of my music, otherwise I'd come across as arrogant and self-assured.

McP3000 09-24-2009 04:38 AM

Thanks for the response. I've only made minor steps into toying with compression, still trying to grasp relationships between stereo fields and getting EQ right. My recording gear isn't the best (I used a $10 mic for the acoustic guitar track) so I find it difficult to get a decent source sample. I try and cover up these blemishes with tampering with noise reduction and EQ, this is the first time i've introduced a recorded guitar track i'm usually just playing with synths, samples and noise filters.

big80smullet 09-24-2009 07:38 AM

keep playing bro it sounds cool
