Wannabe Steve Harris 07-30-2005 03:17 PM

I have been a massive Slayer fan since my introduction to them in 1984. Although I love metal and would put Slayer with maybe Maiden as my favorite metal band, I also listen to a lot of mellower and less heavy stuff as well. So, with that in mind I can kind of assess them outside of the box, so to speak, and not just rate them the way a 100% diehard metal only fan would.

First, Kerry King LIKES and INTENDS to play certain solos outside the key they are in at the time. I remember reading some years back he called it "making devils music" or something to that effect. In any case, he's technically a decent player, fast, etc. He writes good songs in my opinion but I would say overall JH is a more established player/better songwriter, sure. As for Tom, I preferred the days when he was more of a "talker" than the current shouting he seems to do on latest releases. I mean Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons are just insanely good thrash/power metal cd's. Hell Awaits, HTC and even Show No Mercy were great too but the production wasn't as crisp.

Slayer are a truly unique band in the sense that they play very commercially inaccessible music and have done so for over 20 years and really not wavered! You have to give them credit for sticking with what they believe in. They also NEVER fail to impress live and the few people I have taken to a Slayer show that were not necessarily fans have come away impressed. It's like going to a demonic baptist church or something, it almost possesses you!

Anyway, Slayer are f**king great in my opinion and even though I am not real current with the latest crop of metal bands out, I think they are still right on top.

Wannabe Steve Harris 07-31-2005 08:22 AM

AA-12 07-31-2005 08:46 AM

Altho they have some really cool riffs, like the breakdown bit of Angel of Death. But apart from that its just being fast for the saske of being fast. Just not my thing.
Angel Of Death is tight! God I love that song!

According to an interview with King on slayersaves.com The new album is supposed to sound like those ones.

Yeah it kind of sucks, I would love for a Reign in Blood style album.

Sorry guys the interview wasn't with King, it was with Jeff. Here's the part of the interview about the new album (JH=Jeff Hanneman, just incase :thumb: )
BM: Last time I checked in with you guys you had like 10 songs for it.
J H: We have tons of ideas. We don’t have any working titles, we have dumb names that we call the songs so we know what we are talking about but we don’t have any real titles for it. We have tons of music to work with.

BM: What is it sounding like so far?
J H: To me it sound’s like the first three songs on the last record. It’s very intense and very insane.
As long as Slipknot kiddies keep lapping this GHUA style shit up, we will keep getting it

KBSD91 08-02-2005 02:29 AM

Well, Tom said that they're having Rubin (the guy who produced Reign in Blood) produce this album, maybe they'll make it super fast thrash un-forgiving music like RIB again.

There's nothing really wrong with GHUA, there's only one album on there that has no solo, and the songs aren't all that bad, though it's their second to worst album. In my opinion their worst album is Undisputed Attitude, it's all Punk and Punk-covers. And I really can't stand Punk. It's the only album by Slayer I cannot stand.

(LOKI) 08-02-2005 02:37 AM

Undisputed Attitude has a few good-uns though, Gemini for definate.

Apocalyptic Raids 08-02-2005 02:53 AM

The main thing I didn't like about GHUA was Tom's vocals. Ugh.

KBSD91 08-02-2005 03:43 AM

I didn't know Kerry played the bag pipes! :amaze:

The riffs on god hates us all sucked, thats why the album sucked.
The riffs on god hates us all sucked, thats why the album sucked.
I thought they were way better than the rest.

Anyway, if the album is like GHUA i'll buy it, if not, I doubt i'd bother with it.

whatduffhuck7 08-02-2005 11:02 AM

ghua wasent slayuers best album but still a amazing album. jeff needs to go back to writing the songs. i herd kerry is writing again for there upcoming release

That's true, not their greatest but had some good songs. Like Disciple, I love that song's riffs and Bloodline is awesome.

KBSD91 08-07-2005 12:02 AM

BUMP

So I'm listening to Show No Mercy. I realized that The second solo in the song The Anti-Christ is very awesome. It's now my favorite Slayer solo.

Child of the Grave 08-07-2005 12:28 AM

i got the haunting the chapel ep, and im amazed how the reign in blood (bonus tracks) version of aggressive perfector is so much better than the original one. who hear agrees?

KBSD91 08-07-2005 01:14 PM

Yeah I agree, since I'm not a big Judas Priest fan, I thought Slayer's version blew it away.

Endless Obsession 08-07-2005 02:29 PM
i got the haunting the chapel ep, and im amazed how the reign in blood (bonus tracks) version of aggressive perfector is so much better than the original one. who hear agrees?
Of course it does. You are comparins Slayer to Judas Priest. Whos do you think is gonna be better??

KBSD91 08-07-2005 03:58 PM

Yup, I agree Slayer owns Priest. I heard that their new cd is going to be released on October 11. But I've also heard that, that is just a rumor. And Slayer's site says nothing about it.

AA-12 08-07-2005 04:13 PM

Meh, I like Priest a hell of a lot more than Slayer.

KBSD91 08-07-2005 04:17 PM
Meh, I like Priest a hell of a lot more than Slayer.
Oh well, I have the album Turbo. It's pretty good. A ton of a lot better than Slayer's Undisputed Attitude.
