I've been playing guitar about four years, but I've been serious for the last year or so, and maybe for a short time a couple years ago. I don't typically play other people's solos, 'cause they're bitches to get down to the point of being able to play it with any real emotional vitality, plus it's so much more rewarding to make up your own, that builds character. I just learn all the riffs and bits & pieces of the solos, and then improvise to an album. As far as my prefered band to jam to, that's any band with long, simple groovy songs, not to many complex changes (makes for hard soloing sometimes). But it's best to go for variety, that builds character, too.
I'm 15 and most of my friends like the ocassional classic rock song but i don't know any one who likes it as much as me. In the christmas/summer holidays my Dad gave me all his old vinyl and the covers were a little dirty but I cleaned them up and now I have, Cream-Disrali Gears, The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Smash Hits, The Beatles-White album
and heaps of others like jefferson airplane, the byrds and what not. Ive played acoustic guitar for 2 years but I'm 4 weeks away from getting a squire strat.
My 9 year old brother loves classic rock after seeing that movie, school of rock
look on www.cdnow.com , thats where i got mine :)

distrali gears is such an incredible cd, the first Wah-Wah apperance in "the tale of ulyssees", Ginger really shines on that record. my personal favourite of their 4 studio albums.
60's and 70's were when rock was at it's pinacle. today it seems to be going further down hill...but along the way there were some 80's greats, like queen, ac/dc, van halen, billy joel, etc. let's not forget them, they are classic rock as well.

i notice no1's mentioned george thorogood, the doobie bros., iron butterfly, the animals, srv, journey, styx, the moody blues... etc. what are some of ur favorite lesser know classic rock artists?
Montrose was such a great group(sammy hagar) Oh yes and about OU812 and Balance, they were both very good albums, OU812 is my fav VH album from Sammy.

abcvh 04-12-2004 01:38 PM
what instruments do u guys play, and what are your favorite classic rock songs to play along to. i play drums (6 years) and guitar (1 month). i really can't play along with anything yet on the guitar, but on the drums i like playing to "fire," "baba o'reilly," "frankenstein," "won't get fooled again," and lots of cream and zeppelin.

i think it would be a cool idea if we started an e band and recorded covers of classic rock songs. unfortunately i have no recording equiptment.
Piano Nine years and still running. I play a lot of classical, doors, my own music, Yes, Czerny... etc.

And i play guitar (1.25 months), I play AC/DC, rush... etc

I just noticed I haven't posted any of my fav classic rock bands in this thread. I made a "official classic rock" kinda thread a long time ago, but it wasn't nearly as large as this one. Oh well.

The Beatles
The Who
The Byrds
The Animals
The Greatfull Dead
Cream
The Allman Brothers
Band of gypsies
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Rush
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Queen
Boston

As for classic rock bands I cannot stand:

The Doors (I've tried to get into them several times, but I just can't. Most overrated band of all time if you ask me)
The Eagles (as vegetable man said, so boring and generic)
Aerosmith

BludgeonySteve 04-12-2004 01:58 PM

So who likes John Mellencamp? He seems like classic rock but i'm not sure. Anyway I think he is great.

Leonard Skinard 04-12-2004 06:29 PM

SKYNYRD!!!! RULES!!! AC/DC, the who, Ted Nugent, Scorpipons, Guns N Roses, Alice Cooper, Cheech and Chong they all rule

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-12-2004 06:30 PM
Montrose was such a great group(sammy hagar) Oh yes and about OU812 and Balance, they were both very good albums, OU812 is my fav VH album from Sammy.
really? I will always look at Van Halen's "for unlawful carnal knowledge" as Sammys best work with them.

Badmoon 04-12-2004 07:33 PM
The Doors (I've tried to get into them several times, but I just can't. Most overrated band of all time if you ask me)
Are you serious? That is the band that I consider perfect in all aspects of Rock, minus bass playing. They play blues, they play psychedelia. They're just perfect, in my opinion.

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-12-2004 11:56 PM

i cant get into the doors either. i wouldnt say overated, but i think its another example of a bands popularity growing beyond what i would have due to the death of the frontman.

Well, I shouldnt have said most overrated band of all time, but Frail pretty much covered what I think in his post. I'm a big fan of psychadelia, and the blues, but The Doors just don't do it for me.

Badmoon 04-13-2004 08:34 PM

Anybody besides me, see Mickey Hart on that one Yahoo comercial? I think it was yahoo.

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-13-2004 10:54 PM
Well, I shouldnt have said most overrated band of all time, but Frail pretty much covered what I think in his post. I'm a big fan of psychadelia, and the blues, but The Doors just don't do it for me.
it makes total sense when it comes to your taste. overated is just a term people use when they either are afriad to like a band or have some kind of bias against them for whatever reason, we all think it about some groups. i enjoy my Cream albums and other bands from the same time period, but the doors overall sound dosent sit right with me. Jim's voice, although original, gets to me preety quick.

IvortheEngineDriver 04-13-2004 11:14 PM

I think both the Doors and Pink Floyd are hella overrated...just can't get into them

VoodooChild 04-14-2004 08:21 PM

Well just because you "can't get into them" doesn't mean they are over-rated.

Oh, moon, I gotta have my eye's pealed for that comercial. hehe.

Badmoon 04-14-2004 08:44 PM

Shall we post some of our favorite Classic Rock lyrics.

I'll just post Dead ones now.

Lotta poor man make a five dollar bill
Keep him happy all the time
Some other fellow making nothing at all
And you can hear him cryin... - Cumberland Blues

I been ballin' a shiny black steel jack-hammer
Been chippin' up rocks for the great highway
Live five years if I take my time
Ballin' that jack and a drinkin' my wine - Easy Wind

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow - Ripple

Those are the only Dead ones I could think of.

donutdude8888 04-14-2004 09:29 PM

Jimi Hendrix

Am i the only **** one here who knows of the awesome greatness of Jimi Hendrix, the greatest musician EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Bands like the beetles and the doors were great but Jimi Hendrix was awesome, by awesome i mean greatest ever

porter 04-14-2004 09:43 PM

the joker

i agree with all you guys on classic rock. but you guys are leaving out some awsome bands. like foghat and bad company. not to mention my favorite, Styx.
i also hate rap but do you guys like punk. i think most of it just sucks. like the band Casualties. they are prbably the worst band i have ever heard.

captainseptember 04-14-2004 09:44 PM
SKYNYRD!!!! RULES!!!
AMEN!!! SWEET HOME ALABAMA!!!

The Beatles
The Who
Led Zepplin
Steely Dan
Deep Purple
Van Halen
Pink Floyd
Cream

And on The Darkness... only good song of their's is I Believe In a Thing Called Love. Sweeeeet song, but it doesn't make a band.

porter 04-14-2004 09:48 PM

hey captainseptember. do you like any jet. they have some great songs. its on of the few new cds that i can listen to from start to finish.

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-14-2004 09:49 PM
I think both the Doors and Pink Floyd are hella overrated...just can't get into them
i dont take into consideration anyones opinions that use the word "hella".

StreetlightRock 04-15-2004 10:08 AM

^^, Jet are ok, solid, but normal.

BTW, any of you guys listen to Lynard Skynard? Got hold of a few of thier songs the other day, there pretty cool, opinions?

DVG.

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-15-2004 11:07 AM

Skynard are a band that i can only stand the hits, and i dont like saying that haha. Ive listened to almost all of their studio alums over time (hell i live in Missouri) and aside from their well known tracks, nothing really sticks out to me.

On the other hand, Molly Hatchet i feel song for song are a better example of southern rock...even if they came in the late 70's.
W00t, let's get some BOC talk started. Right now I only have one of their albums, a compilation actually, Workshop of the Telescopes. I'm looking for some of their other ones like Blue Oyster Cult, Tyranny and Mutation and others. Even though I only have W of the T I still love it. I love BOC because the're so unique and original. They have this dark psychedelic feel to them. It's amazing. Roeser's guitar work is awesome and Bloom's voice is up there with the greats. S, what do the rest of you guys think of them.
Get BOC, T & M, Secret Treaties, On Your Feet Or On Your Knees (Live, brilliant!). Also, the two newest ones, Heaven Forbid and Curse of the hidden mirror. And Extraterrestrial live (worth owning for Veteran of the psychic wars, if you like the studio version, this will drop your jaw, seriously, I have rare footage of this from when they recorded the live album, really is jaw-dropping,no exaggeration) And the new live album. I reccommend the DVD though, check out the way Buck plays guitar! Heres Buck's Boogie (live) from the DVD/live album 'A long day's night'. They're getting better with age, and still tour regularly (will be seeing them in London in June!)

Rock on.

Any other BOC nuts here,or am I the only one?

FrailandBedazzled1979 04-15-2004 02:59 PM

^^^

yeah no one responded to my BOC post :( . Honestly, im not a secret treaties fan. Weak song writing IMO. I love Spectres, Fire of an unknown orgin, self titled, agents of fortune, heaven forbid, etc... but secret treaties is always a let down to me. As for songs, im big on the "spectre" tracks as well as the majority of songs from their self titeld album (im on a lamb but i aint no sheep) and i had the fortune of seeing them last fall in a small casino club room...very great show. :)

Let's see,
1)Career of Evil. Musically, quite standard, but lyrics are pretty darn funny.
2)Subhuman. I like this, but the best version is on 'On your feet or on your knees'.
3)Dominance and submission. I really, really like this one. Never heard a live version that does it justice though. Love the lead work, great song. The way that the 3 guitars layer themselves before the final solo is very cool indeed.
4)ME 262. Okay, good lyrics, but the '5 guitars' version on 'On your feet or on your knees' wipes the floor with this version. That's all 5 of them on guitar kicking *** on this song. Wish I'd been born a couple of decades earlier to see that.
5)Cagey cretins. Solo came out of nowhere, one of my favourite of Buck's solos. Short, but very sweet.
6)Harvester of eyes. Best version is on 'On your feet or on your knees' (Check out the energy in the solo just after Eric shouts 'Huh! Alright! Get down!" Excellent.)
7)Flaming Telepaths. I like this too, I like the songwriting on it,and the guitar.
Theres a different re-recorded version on Cult Classics (which I'm trying to learn at the moment, btw) which is also very good.
8)Astronomy. Studio was good, but best version is on Cult Classics. Just after 'don't froget my dog, fixed inconsequent' the solo starts, slowly, one note at a time (about 1 note each 2.5 seconds) and builds up to an intense, speedy (about 7 notes a second, I guess) excellent solo (half of this versions 9 minutes is the end solo, with two small solos earlier in the song) that really is great.

But first album is probably my favourite. I agree with you on 'I'm on the lamb but I ain't no sheep. That really does demonstrate Buck's underrated skill. Also Before the kiss, a redcap is a favourite. Dual guitar leads is cool too.

Can't wait to see them live....

No problem, always nice to meet a fellow BOC fan.
Heres 'Cities on flame with rock and roll' also from the live DVD Cities on flame
Eric's voice on this isn't as good as it was,but considering he, Buck, and Allen are in their 50's it holds up pretty well. Buck's leadwork is still awesome at 57 though.

Also, you can take a look under tour dates to see if they're playing near you sometime. http://blueoystercult.com/Road-main.html

bassboy26 04-15-2004 07:37 PM

i find that there r only a few bands that i like that arnt classic rock... i mean classic rock is great... it came from a time when people could not make it if they werent great musicians, there were no nu-metal and boybands that had no talent... CLASSIC ROCK IS HOW ALL ROCK SHOULD BE!!!!

Badmoon 04-15-2004 08:20 PM

^ That's not exactly true, look at The Ramones, there is not really a great musician out of them. Though they are Punk, they have have came from practically the same time period.
