So if I like the Specials, I would also like....

I need more 2tone!
The Pietasters

Bukowski 02-24-2006 05:27 PM

I'm looking for something similar to Gogol Bordello and World Inferno Friendship Society that i could dig. I hear both bands get labled 'gypsy punk', but i have no idea about any other bands in the genre, and figured this was as good a place as any to ask. Any ideas?

Guignol is the only other band I know similar to them, they are all instrumental though.

You could try Polkacide. They are "polka-punk"

Bukowski 02-24-2006 06:15 PM

I think i'll try Polkacide. Polka-punk sounds interesting...

How good are Guignol? Instrumental isn't really what i had in mind, but if they're as good as the other bands then i'll check them out.
The Pietasters
The Pietasters aren't two tone. They're just traditional ska. They are a great band though, and I would recommend them to any ska fans who haven't heard them.

Guignol is entertaining but not something I listen to for hours.
Rise Against are punk/melodic hardcore but more likely just punk.
Strung out are punk/melodic hardcore but more likely just punk.
Propaghandi are punk/thrash
AWS are melodic hardcore

I wouldn't say they're trad. They're like a combination of The Planet Smashers and Slackers.

But nonetheless. They kick so much a'ss.

They're definitely good musicians, but I find it hard to get real into instrumental stuff.

They played with Erik Petersen when I saw him. :)

Yeah, you're right, they're not really traditional ska. But they are indeed a good band.

NekroThrax 02-25-2006 03:52 PM

are the HorrorPops good?
and can someone reccomend some good Skacore or thrash

Brain Toad 02-25-2006 03:53 PM

Horrorpops are really bad.

NekroThrax 02-25-2006 03:53 PM

or some hardcore punk

NekroThrax 02-25-2006 03:54 PM

oh...ok thanks

Flagjacket 02-25-2006 10:53 PM

Some good hardcore is Blue Monday, Jerry's Kids, and Gorilla Biscuits.

DaveToopes 02-25-2006 10:56 PM

Good thrash: Municipal Waste, DS-13, Exodus, D.R.I.

Head over to the hardcore forum's thrash thread for more, they can help you out more than I can.

Flagjacket 02-25-2006 10:57 PM

Ethan I got a DS-13 album and all the songs are less a minute. Is that correct?

DaveToopes 02-25-2006 10:57 PM

Most likely, yes.

Also for thrash, check out Bones Brigade and for hardcore Kids Like Us.

Flagjacket 02-25-2006 10:59 PM

I can confirm the Bones Brigade are good. And KLU are good too.

DaveToopes 02-25-2006 11:09 PM

Anyone that doesn't confirm that is a asshole.

Times Ten 02-25-2006 11:20 PM

If you like DS-13, check out 97a, Betercore, Bruce Banner (same members), The Chuck Norris, Crucial Unit, Cut The Shi't, Diskonto, Heresy, Jellyroll Rockheads, Machine Gun Romantics, RAMBO, Reagan SS, Scholastic Deth, Street Trash, Vitamin X, Voetsek, and What Happens Next?. I felt like making a list.

Flagjacket 02-25-2006 11:22 PM

Guys, am I weird cause I don't find super shoprt grindcore thrash appealing?

Times Ten 02-25-2006 11:29 PM

No, but I think it is amazing.

Brain Toad 02-25-2006 11:30 PM
Guys, am I weird cause I don't find super shoprt grindcore thrash appealing?
It's an acquired taste, but I think there is no real bad grind because it's too short to be that bad.

Flagjacket 02-25-2006 11:33 PM

I like Pig Destroyer and DS-13 but then like, a ten second song carried entirely by that hi hat-snare-bass thing and a guy screaming just doesn't sound that great to me. How do these bands play shows?

DaveToopes 02-26-2006 10:47 AM

All good bands, I'll check out the ones that aren't bolded. I've been meaning to check Voetsek out for a long time.

Edit: Kevin, Nick's right. It is an acquired taste. I hated the stuff at first. If you want to get into grind, try listening to Toxic Narcotic or Municipal Waste, they're a bit more polished, and may be able to get you started.

Times Ten 02-26-2006 03:57 PM

Voetsek is amazing. The vocalist is a girl.

Ghostfire3 02-26-2006 04:18 PM
or some hardcore punk
Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Gorilla Biscuits

Can't go wrong with any of those bands.

DaveToopes 02-26-2006 06:57 PM

Hardcore punk: Career Suicide.

Ghostfire3 02-28-2006 07:21 PM

I'm in need of some good hardcore punk. So, I have a couple questions.

1. What is a better Gorilla Biscuits album: Gorilla Biscuits or Start Today ?

2. If I like bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, etc. what other hardcore bands would I like?

And no post-hardcore please. Thank you. That is all.
