How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA?
Like apples and oranges, basically....

....but it's still the Who. And the Woodstock stuff kinda sucks.

EDIT: I find the '89 shows go for an album kind of experiance. The horns and synths and back up singers and percussionist lend it that feel and sound. The Woodstock stuff? Well, I don't have to tell you about that....

PinkFreud 12-27-2005 01:22 AM

yeah, they hated their woodstock performance. daltrey's voice is off in "see me, feel me."

you know what song is awesome? "eminence front". overlooked too because its post-moon.

Lunch 12-27-2005 09:37 AM

Entwistle's bass is really great on the chorus. I really dig that song in general.
haha pure ownage

it would have been nice to get the tommy/quad DVD, as I've always wanted to see live Tommy in its entirety. How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA?
I haven't seen TKAA (I know I need to,) but I think the best way to go would be with Isle of Wite. I know they cut a few tracks, but if I remember corectly they're just minor ones. The Tommy part of the DVD is definitly the weakest part, but it works in some places. The Quad/Live Hits part is awesome, though. I love the version of Can't Explain from the '96 encore.

Eminence Front is a standout track. The Who actually had some good post Moon songs and performances on record. However spotty. You Better You Bet, Don't Let Go The Coat, You, and especially Another Tricky Day (a Who classic) are all very solid cuts from Face Dances. And Daily Records, too. From "It's Hard" Cry If You Want, Dangerous, Eminence Front, and One At A Time all get the job done. Athena isn't bad, either. The rest is pretty much crap, though.

And I can never mention this period of the Who's career without mentioning Pete's solo albums of the same time. Empty Glass is clearly a Who album, and had it been performed by them it would of been right up there with the best Who albums, and a new beginning for the band after Moons death. This album came out right after Face Dances. And again with It's Hard, Townshends solo album of the same year "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes" would of made a great Who album. As they are I consider them Who albums by default, and they are a big part of the way I got into the Who. These albums would of seeing them go out with a bang instead of a whimper. I blame Roger for this. But Pete as well. Dumb bastards....

Whatever the case, it's all long been said and done. But for any of you who might wonder where exactly the Who's greatnesss disappeared to during the Kenny Jones years, don't blame the drummer!! It's all there. In spades, and as good as ever. It just can't be found on Who albums. You have to look to the Creator for it. The One. The All Knowing.....

.....which means Pete, of course. So check out those solo albums. You will be amazed....

This forum has a Who board! Cool. Hope you regulars don't mind a new guy posting here. I love this band. It's good to see a forum where others do, too. I've read some posts and you guys seem to know your stuff. Great first article, and I just want to say I also agree with JXD about the Pete solo albums. A real missed opportunity for the Who.

I hope to post here as often as I can.

Lunch 12-28-2005 05:26 PM

See Me, Feel Me better at Woodstock than at Leeds? No way.

Kenney Jones gets a lot of blame for things he isn't responsible for.

baba 'O bubba 01-02-2006 09:27 PM

Nice Who board here. Hope you have room for another member. And just to confirm what another member had posted, here is a link confirming a Who project and tour for next year. Sounds like they are going to freshen up things some. I'm looking forward to it:

Always good to have another poster here, especially since this thread lacks heavy traffic.

I've seen multiple sites confirming the 2006 tour, now I can't wait for the dates to be posted.

zabbit82 01-02-2006 10:10 PM

Hey Lunch, what would you rate Face Dances? I listened to it on vynal on my dad's record player a while ago. You Better You Bet is one of my favorite Who tracks, but I felt the rest of it to be really poppy. It would be cool if I had your opinion anyway...

JohnXDoesn't 01-02-2006 10:37 PM

^^Don't ask Lunch. He knows crap about the Who.

Face Dances is an even 7/10. No more, no less.

zabbit82 01-02-2006 10:48 PM

Well I know he is a hardcore Who fan, just as I am a hardcore Zep fan. But I'll also take your advice on this one.

Dragon_Prince 01-03-2006 04:08 AM

2006 is gonna be a good year =D
The Who, Radiohead, David Gilmour(still need to get tickets), Deep Purple and maybe Genesis :| Ow yes and RHCP :P

I like that song a lot (you better you bet). I also like squeeze box :P

wanderer 01-03-2006 12:06 PM

I would give Face Dances 10/10 if it didn't have YBYB.....
Almost perfect POP reccord...

bleh. i hate squeeze box but i love the album its on. the who by numbers all the way!

MidnightRider 01-03-2006 01:00 PM

I've always liked Squeeze Box, perhaps because I'm extremely immature. The only Who albums I have are Live at Leeds, Then and Now(compilation), and Tommy. What is Quadrophenia like compared to their other work, sound-wise?

Great I recommend Quadrophnia and Who's Next :)

Meh, I have to admit I like that song. Theres some better ones on the album (Dreaming From The Wast, anyone?)

yeah man. woodstock's version is all out of tune. it hurts my ears sometimes. its good but its not great. live at leeds' version is great.

dreaming from the waist has some of entwistle's best playing.

The LaL version is stunning. And Entwistle shines on all the extra bonus tracks they added on Who By Numbers especially Dreaming from the Waist.

Looks like someone still has book envy:p

baba 'O bubba 01-03-2006 03:42 PM

I really like The Who By Numbers. Great underrated album. Coming after three classics and Live at Leeds I'm sure at the time it must of sounded average. But it's really The Who in stripped down form and rockin' along. And yes, Squeeze Box is a gas. I read that Townshend was horrified that the band chose Squeeze Box to record, and even more horrified when it became a top 5 hit in America. But it's a nice little ditty, anyway. And I agree with the above poster about the bonus tracks on the new releases of the album. Excellent live stuff there.

Seafroggys 01-03-2006 07:15 PM

i like the bonus tracks on Who's Next almost more then the album itself.....Baby Don't You Do it, Water, Naked Eye, all supurb songs

zabbit82 01-03-2006 07:35 PM
I really like The Who By Numbers. Great underrated album.
I just got that album for Christmas. Its really great, and true its underrated. What I'm really impressed about is how the group channeled all thier problems (mostly Pete) onto record and how great it sounds.
I would give Face Dances 10/10 if it didn't have YBYB.....
Almost perfect POP reccord...
Cool, although I think YBYB is really a POP song within itself. Recommendations from anyone - should I get that album?

robo2448 01-03-2006 07:44 PM

I was the original The Who By Numbers whore around here. Great album. I think my favorite song from it is How Many Friends. The live version of Dreaming From the Waist is much better than the studio version. I like Squeeze Box, but it's not an amazing song.

I don't have Facedances, but I've heard most of the songs and they're pretty good, but it's poppier than anything The Who did.

I like the Woodstock version of See Me, Feel Me a lot, but still prefer LAL. Anyone who doesn't own LAL should go buy it. Now. Be sure to get the deluxe edition though with the Tommy performance. So much better than the regular release.

I want a book on the Who.

Jacob6293 01-03-2006 07:47 PM

Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?

baba 'O bubba 01-03-2006 07:49 PM
Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?
Well, they don't do it for it. The show uses a couple of Who songs for intros and end credits, though.

Lunch 01-03-2006 07:52 PM
I want a book on the Who.
Yea, I have two, no big deal....

The Dave Marsh biography (Before I Get Old) is good, especially if you want to hear someone constantly own the Who. He really cuts them no slack and at some parts it gets almost annoying, but overall it's very good and insightful. Then I got the coffee table Who book which is just cool.

zabbit82 01-03-2006 07:55 PM
Doesn't The Who do the theme song for the CSI tv show?
If my memory serves me correct, the songs used to be (at different times) Baba O'Riley, Wont Get Fooled Again, and Who Are You.
