DT/Rush > DT/Symphony X > DT/Tool
Totally disagree.

IMO, Rush is too soft to play with DT. You'd get the older people going who love Rush's classic stuff, and then Dream Theater would open up with "As I Am" and blow them away. The metal heads would not like Rush nearly as much, and the Rush-heads would not stand for heavy Dream Theater.

Symphony X playing with DT would be, well, if one band played instead of two. Sure, SX's stuff does not EXACTLY sound like Dream Theater's, but the point is that both bands are technically proficient in their playing, so to anyone who doesn't like it, it would seem like a complete and utter wank fest.

Tool playing with Dream Theater...well, they play progressive metal in a totally different way than Dream Theater does. Whereas Dream Theater emphasize technical prowess, Tool utilize compartively simple, but yet complex, rhythms and song structures to create their songs. Tool and Dream Theater both have heavy material, so they would both appeal to metal heads, neither has that classic prog rock appeal, so nobody wanting Rush would be disgusted by the wall of Petrucci distortion, and you'd get alot more variety than if you had SX playing with them

I realize I've made generalizations in that, and I don't care, I'm not being totally serious, except the part about Tool being a better fit than the others. And I like Rush and what little SX I have heard, so don't think I'm just slagging off on them. :thumb:

when i listen to muse i actlually picture DT in my head i dunno why i guess they have simmilar qualities

Speedy Fingers 02-09-2005 06:30 PM

Muse....and Dream Theater?? Don't get me wrong...Muse is the band that got me into what I love today, but they are nothing alike. The styles of each band are totally different.

3rdplanet 02-09-2005 06:31 PM

If you go on the John Petrucci forums, you will find most of the fans on there are Dream Theater *duh* and Opeth fans.

Would a tour like that work?

i should clarify it the high pitched guitaring in muse is like petruccis high pitched :p

MAthiAS 02-09-2005 06:38 PM

Opeth and DT would be sick!

3rdplanet 02-09-2005 06:46 PM

^ That's what I was thinking aswell, couldn't see it happening though.

Who have Dream Theater toured with? Fate's Warning, Beatallica, any others?

Shadius 02-09-2005 06:48 PM

If Tool and DT did a tour together I would HAVE to go, no matter the cost.

However, I don't think they run in the same circles, although they're both progressive-ish they're pretty much at different ends of the spectrum. Rhythm based vs. Virtuoso.

Shame though, it would be an unbelievable tour.

*orgasm*

OH MY GOD!!!! I would seriously pay 100 bucks for that concert

sbgFX 02-10-2005 09:56 AM

Slightly off topic... Any drummers here?... Any drummers who have also seen Live at the Budokan?.. Any drummers who watched the drum solo?... Any drummers who'd forfeit all of their worldly possessions to sit at his 'Siamese Twin' kit to PLAY WITH MIKE?? LOL... The guy on the DVD blew it hehe.. Bothered me. I'd have gone absolutely bananas on that kit. My one chance, you know? LOL

3rdplanet 02-10-2005 10:41 AM

^ Tell me about it man :(

Although I didn't like the solo Portnoy played, but the kit was a beast.

shamed-angel 02-10-2005 10:57 AM

LTE opening for DT would be sick. It'd never happen though. DT and Pain of Salvation would be amazing also.

Ha. I would like to catch that, altough I dont like the Newest Material that much, actually, I hate it.
Compared to Something like Images and Words or Awake, or even Scenes from a Memory, It really sucks. My fav. is Images and Words, and then maby SFAM, but from then on, Albums like Six Degrees or Train of Thought, its to different. That's one thing I hate about oldish metal or just rock bands, they all seem to turn sour in the end. They try be stay too ''Hip'' and ''Happening''. Like Metallica, WTF? Short hair, clean shaves, runningshoes, and baggy pants. Not at all cool for a metal band. What we need is a change, back to the old days. Tight pants, Long hair and, hell, throw in a Father Christmas beard, I mean why the f*ck not? thats where metal started and thats how it should stay.Traditional. :thumb:

MAthiAS 02-10-2005 12:26 PM

Dream Theater didn't sell out with those albums, thats just the music they made.

Prince of Darkness 02-10-2005 12:42 PM

and the music they made turned out to be crap. Petrucci really isnt the best songwriter in the world, but somehow I&W and SRAM turned out fine. Whats wrong with the new Stuff? DT turned sour.

BradyEB 02-10-2005 12:44 PM
Opeth and DT would be sick!
He writes some great lyrics, and what do you think he was doing on the albums you like? Not writing?

ToT is great, As I Am is a great song, Endless Sacrifice has an amazing chorus and some great vocals from Labrie, Honor thy Father is okay, Stream of Conciousness is DT's best instrumental IMO, and In the Name of God is one of my favorite DT songs, amazing solo and some great riffage.

3rdplanet 02-10-2005 01:14 PM

I agree, ToT is a fantastic album, there seem to be two camps involved with Dream Theater, the 'Classical' fans, and the 'Modern' fans. Or at least people say they have a preference for one period over the other.

I'm glad to say I'm a fan of both.

ME TOO :D:D:D

I never realised there were so many of us.

wrathchild88 02-10-2005 03:45 PM

i'm sorry to say that i havnt heard any dream theatre (stupid british tv doesnt show them) so i want to know what you guys think is their best album

3rdplanet 02-10-2005 03:55 PM

^ Tell me about it :( Though I don't think they have that much coverage in America, and I only know of one Video, and that's for the radio edit of Lie.

I personally love Awake, and if you are coming to Dream Theater from a sort of Pink Floyd/Yes/King Crimson musical taste I would say listen to stuff off that first.

If you are coming at it from more of a metal style taste, try Train og Thought.

I saw a video for Pull Me Under once. Their singles kind of suck because they cut out parts, usually keyboard parts.

On ToT again, I got ToT first, and I actually doubt that I would've liked Images and Words if I hadn't first heard DT's other stuff.
