Except a lot of us learn it WHILE experiencing as a lot of us see a lot of diversity in the city. However, unless you're a moron I think that 'experience' is overrated. Just treat everyone the same.
Except, a lot don't. How many black people ARE there in New England?

You can't learn how to treat a certain ethnic group when you have no experience dealing with them.

Like Dwight Eisenhower said, "Farming looks mighty easy when you're a thousand miles away from a corn field and your pitchfork is a pencil".

Cain 05-11-2005 03:55 PM

Hey Illmatic, check out the Elvis thread. You may find it interesting.

Agreed. That competition is getting a pathetically low number of votes, instead recieving tons of St. Anger-related posts from the likes of our hyperactive friend LarsAgi007.
Now that I have voted, I feel a need to make others do so. Were my votes okay (not the actual numbers :) just the way I did it)?
I still say that's a bad way to look at it. If you're thinking you have to learn how to treat a certain ethnic group, you're going about things in the wrong way to start with.

At the minute things are shaping up like this in my life.

JPOP > MunkyMagik > Manga > My GCSE results

I realised im going to get a D in ICT. :(

Bartender 05-11-2005 04:04 PM

How can you tell?

CemetaryGates9 05-11-2005 04:04 PM

I'm listening to the entries (On cain's currently) right now.
How can you tell?
If your talking to me, its because overall i go into the exam with an E, and the highest grade i can get is a D. I will get the D, but im only getting this because my IT teacher fucked up.

Bartender 05-11-2005 04:06 PM

How did she fuck up?

CemetaryGates9 05-11-2005 04:07 PM

I'll probably have to read repeat this grade thanks to my Reading teacher's being an uber fuck.

Eh, it's been coming out wrong when I say it.

What I mean is...

You can talk up how all minorities deserve equal treatment, and how all people are equal, and how we should all be tolerant of one another...but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't stereotype and racially profile, and it doesn't mean you actually will treat minorities equally.

Cain 05-11-2005 04:13 PM

Bartender, your reviews were honest, detailed, and overall excellent. Regardless how miffed I am that you didn't give my song an 11/10, I still appreciate the time that went into your review. :)

I second this. The concept of color-blindness is very often an attitude assumed by white people stricken with white guilt whenever the issue of inequality even comes up: they ignore the implications of our extremely complex racial situation today by providing such an easy, thoughtless response, and the only thing that ends up happening--far from encouraging diversity and equality--is merely a continuation and assistance of white rule in a system that is already, like it or not, agree or not, naturally and inherently skewed in favor of whites. The white people who are colorblind may genuinely feel that they are not racist, but since racism is now more than ever built into the fabric of our society, such an attitude can only perpetuate inequality, not cure it.

Question for any mods browsing at this time: I know that you can see all of the edits made to a post, reading mine must be hell :), but how does it actually work? does it just show you all of the text entered? or do you have to click options or something?

Not bad. I haven't been in this thread in a while. I'm kind of getting bored of mx.

I've been bored with the computer.. So I'm cutting back a bit. I've been sleeping instead of surfing the web, its not as good as you'de think.. Because yesterday I slept from 5:30-9:30.. couldn't fall asleep 'till 3 AM.. And I had to get up at 7..

Well, this Gatsby paper is very annoying. It is a terrible, disjointed rambling analysis of why Nick is a credible narrator, based on the bad driver metaphor found throughout the book.

I have no idea how long it is supposed to be so I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 words out to do the trick.

Well, "The Great Gatsby" is an annoying, terrible, disjointed, rambling book, so you're not straying far from the source material.

Also, I'm going to have a baby brother.

I kind of liked it. I think it has been over analyzed though.

Congrats! I guess you were the child your mother had young and now she's the same age as your sibling(s) parents?

No, Nick sits in a neat balance that allows him to safely analyze his acquaintances without drawing fire for being equally deserving of criticism or being accused of having a lack of understanding of the topic to which he is addressing.

Sample of my atrocious writing.

Cain 05-11-2005 08:44 PM

Gatsby has the potential to be a very moving character, but I think all great literature is mostly wasted on high school assignments. I had to do that particular one that you're doing for AP English and it was a big piece of crap because I had no idea how to look at form and structure and critique that. I've only learned that particular skill here in college.
Congrats! I guess you were the child your mother had young and now she's the same age as your sibling(s) parents?
What in the name of God are you talking about?

But yes, my mother did have me rather young (when she was 23). My stepdad has a good ten years on her, and I guess they just wanted another kid.

I don't know the exact date, but somewhere around January 10th or 11th, I think.

Also, DM, I really dig your ability to write in coherent sentences*

* - by "in coherent sentences", I mean "completely incoherent bullshit"

But I've been there before, so I feel for you.

Good times

That's a pretty good simile, actually. That's essentially what my brain does. I just hate morons, but then my brain reminds me, "Chill, it's the Internet, idiots abound on it" and then I realize hey, it's right.

Anyways, I don't think I've done one of those in awhile because I have to try to give off a more approachable vibe. All the regs that I like know where they stand with me (obviously), so it's all good. I try to give people a chance, but once someone does something ridiculous or [intentionally] repeatedly pushes my e-buttons, then it's hard for me to be civil :)

One would think that they'd teach you all that in high school to (gasp!) prepare for college/university, but they never do.

EDIT: Hey Aaron, how did the senior/staff show go? Did you play well?

If I didn't have to work, I was going to round up a bunch of people and when you walked on stage, we'd start a "Magicbus! Magicbus!" chant. It would have been awesome. I seriously had it all planned... but then I had to work.

I know, it's true. That's why I don't do well on multiple choice analysis questions, because I generally just talk circles around the subject and based on your level of interpretation, I may have the right answer in there somewhere. I do fairly well on these types of papers. I purposely read too deeply into the topic and make myself sound like a faux-cultured ninny.

Illmatic 05-11-2005 08:56 PM

Hahaha...oh man, I just remembered that babies are chick magnets.

The only problem is, how many people are going to think he's my brother as opposed to my son? (No, this isn't necessarily a race thing--an 18 year old holding a baby is going to garner a response like that no matter what race, or so I hope)

But then again, who cares? I'm going to have the brother I always wanted.

Cain 05-11-2005 08:57 PM

That's why I enjoy my school...I can write a paper that is actually about something.

I bull****ted massively last night though, because it was a craft paper for an author of short stories and it's the end of the year, so **** that.

When I have a kid, I'm going to wait a while before the second one. My little sister is one of the most adorable, well-behaved children I have ever come across and I strongly suspect it's because she has two very mature older siblings, i.e., me and my other 14-year-old sister.

Anybody ever seen the Bill Cosby bit on children ("brain-damaged people")? It's the funniest thing ever.
