I did some track-by-tracks in my early days, but I don't really like them anymore, because they don't help at all if you don't actually know the songs.

*Great chorus, good bassline* Doesn't do anything for me.

I am failing math, so my parents thought I should get a tutor. So I find one online, and today was the first day I met her. I was expecting an old lady or something, but when she shows up my jaw hit the floor. She is SMOKING hot. I'm telling you she could be a model. She is about 23, and from the Ukraine.

So I'm getting tutored by a model, basically.[/QUOTE]

I love Per Ardua's track by tracks. He talks about the song but also how it incorporates itself into the album as a whole and gives side notes as he goes to keep it interesting. If there is anyone who I model my reviews after, it is he.

I, like some others, lost interest in CD reviews since Sputnik was made. I used to drop into the CR review forums and see what was new, comment, etc. I rarely visit Sputnik though.

If you don't **** her, this story has no point, you understand. :)

Today I thought that I didn't save the half of my 28-page paper that I slaved on for all of Monday, but my roommate told me where to find it and saved me from killing myself. :)

That was implied.

To give this post meaning, I jammed with a friend of mine today, and I kept freezing up. I couldn't think of any riffs to play. Does this ever happen to you guys?

Let's get back to Sputnik for a minute.

So do my reviews suck or something? Be honest.

Anyways, I was planning on doing two reviews tomorrow. Should I try writing in paragraph form instead of track-by-track? It's just easier for me to write a number of sentences for each track instead of trying to incorporate the entire album into a small number of paragraphs.

I really can't say, as I haven't been to Sputnik in a very long time. I'd assume they would be well done.

Cain 04-28-2005 07:38 PM

Re: Sputnik reviews: I think I'm pretty good at objectively looking at albums as they compare to other albums in a band's catalog, and what's likely to be accessible to certain people as compared to how I view a particular song or band.

But Sputnik is full of crap, I think. My review for Nightwish's Wishmaster has only gotten one comment, a sentence-long bit, and the only review of mine that's gotten any attention (of course) is the one for "Blackwater Park."

What's the point of reviewing lesser-known stuff when the only thing that ever gets read are whatever popular clicks that show up all the time on the top 10 lists on the site, is my question.

Very intensive, minute-by-minute track by tracks is what I tend to do, followed by a summary of the album as a whole.

Trying to sum up the album without specifics is like reviewing a movie without mentioning the plot.

No, your reviews are good, I just think that a lot of people don't visit Sputnik.

I know I don't :/

lunch998 04-28-2005 07:40 PM

Thats why when I review albums for the other forums I do things like Led Zeppelin I and Pink Floyd things. And of course The Who.

Stop spamming, Eleventeen. Even if it's not a harmful statement, a two-word post is not a useful contribution to a discussion. And you do that all the time.

Come on, buddy. :)

The most frustrating thing for me about Sputnik is that I'll review these albums, and it'll take a good ninety minutes or so. I'll come back a week later, and I'll have one comment that's absolutely plain and substanceless (which is unfortunately representative of Sputnik as a whole, it seems). The only time I get decent comments is when I whore the links in this thread and ask you guys to comment on whether or not you read the review and thought it was good, even if you disagreed with the rating.

I hate it how I spend all this time writing, only to get minimal reviews.

Another issue that will piss me off is if the reviews are copyrighted by Jeremy once they're submitted. If that's the case, then I do not want to be associated with Sputnik and would accordingly want all my reviews removed.

That's the pain of Reviewing, people don't care what others say, they only care what they say.

I made this pic for a friend:

I do CD reviews/Artist Profiles just because I enjoy it when I don't have much else to do. I like trying to express the music in words and communicating albums/people I really like to others.

As though they are Jeremy's reviews?

I understand, but why? I mean, just because they don't get enough exposure on Sputnik? Do you have career aspirations in the field?

Distant Echoes 04-28-2005 07:57 PM

I gave up on sputnik awhile ago. Its really frustrating to deal with for such little recognition...even after the review is submitted.

I don't think I've ever read one of your reviews. Once I finish this one, I will.

I hate not having my reviews read. I usually whore them. I have a tendency to do albums no one knows though or on;y a very few people on this site do so it's expected. I tried to find an album to review that would get lots of response but I couldn't find any I felt like listening to. In the end it was between a Melt Banana album or the Mare EP. Mare EP it is.

No no no, not any of that, although that is sound reasoning that I didn't think of.

I don't care about exposure or anything. Certainly, they are not newspaper-worthy or magazine-worthy or any of that.

I just don't like the idea that once I submit my reviews, they no longer become mine, so all that work goes right out the window for someone else.

I keep confusing you with Wintermute whenever I see that avatar. What is it of, out of curiosity?

See you later Dancin' Man.

To AntiHero: a lot of people have expressed a lot of displeasure at Sputnik. But Jeremy has probably expended a ton of work on it, and he hasn't been blind to people's suggestions. He's even included avatars and bigger font sizes next to people's posts to make it more forum-like. In many ways, the change of posting style in sputnik is much more inexplicable than anything else.

I mean, look at the way this site looks. Considering the fact that it conserves bandwidth on the forums, I'd be willing to cut Jeremy some slack since he's obviously busted his ***.
