Sweet, good luck, sir. I may get a chance to bust my "playing live" cherry in a few weeks. My buddy plays in a blues band and he said I could practice with them a few times, then hit up a gig with em.

But sometimes they only LEARN it instead of EXPERIENCING it, and when it comes to racial relations, experience is just as valuable, if not more valuable.

I mean, these kids can learn all they want, but they still wouldn't know how to act around a black person or an Arab, and they certainly wouldn't feel any more comfortable.
Surely the whole point is that they shouldn't act any differently?

Riva - sounds wholesome :-/ Nice avatar.

Lord Abortion 05-11-2005 08:05 AM

yeah... I actually haven't sung live with my band, first real practice tomorrow though
 get ready for some incoherent screams and growling...
and a drunken arse wandering aimlessly across the stage, screaming in the lead guitarist's face, before returning to the centre and unleashing a hellish inhuman 10 second scream- and into hammer smashed face...

munky_magik 05-11-2005 08:09 AM

So I was messing about with photos for my Geography field work, you can get some pretty cool results.

Looks like an acid trip to me  . Was that done with photoshop, or did you just invert the colors in paint?

munky_magik 05-11-2005 08:50 AM

Just inverted the colours in Paint.
I don't need any of that photoshop crap.

Shred Danson 05-11-2005 08:54 AM

I figured. My brother uses photoshop because he's an aspiring comic book artist and he colors in all his work with that sometimes, but when I try to use it, I scream "FUCK!" and go doodle in paint.

munky_magik 05-11-2005 08:56 AM

Hellz yeah bitch.

Changing subjects, I've been listening to a hell of a lot of Clutch lately. God, I love that band.

munky_magik 05-11-2005 09:07 AM

Yeah, they are really good. I haven't heard that much of them though, aside from their latest album which my brother's friend kindly demonstrated when I went to visit.

NP: Clutch-Walking in The Great Shining Path of Monster Trucks

Bartender 05-11-2005 10:07 AM

Clutch are good.

I'm in the process of deciding what modules to take next year. I thought it I had it all figured out, until I realised that the columns signified they were in different semesters, and we couldn't just chooce freely. Meaning what I would have chosen was an 80/40 split, which isn't allowed. Since I have little else to do, I'll type out my choices, see what you people think.

1. Formal Logic or Philosophy of Language

2. Ancient Philosophy (Plato, Aristotle) or Modern Philosophy (Hume, Leibniz)

3. Political Philosophy or Moral Philosophy

4. Epistemology or Theories & Observations in Science

5. Realism and Anti-Realism or Philosophy of Religion

6. Sartre and Nietzsche or Media Ethics and Philosophy of Sport*

*two separate modules, but they add up to the same as Sartre & Nietzsche.

The annoying thing is, I have to choose six in total, but three have to come from each 'column' (each side of the or), and I have to choose one from each of the first five or-pairings, 1-5. :(.

Does this make sense? :-/

Firecracker 05-11-2005 11:14 AM

I don't know, i love Philosophy, but i don't know the differences between them all.
I like the sound of number five though.

Jom 05-11-2005 11:21 AM

Well, the latter half of #6 doesn't seem like it'd appease your interests :)

This is what I'd decide for you based on what I know about your uni studies (assuming I understood what you wrote, anyway):

Ancient Philosophy
Political Philosophy
Realism and Anti-Realism

///

Philosophy of Language
Moral Philosophy
Theories and Observations in Science (I'm seeing this as an elective, and not as a philosophy course... but I'm probably incorrect)

Bartender 05-11-2005 11:25 AM
I don't know, i love Philosophy, but i don't know the differences between them all.

Which one? Realism and Anti-Realism or Philosophy of Religion?
Bartender, definitely do anything involving Nietzche, and I'd say both moral philosophy and philosophy of language sound interesting as well, although that may just be me.
Yeah, I'd been planning to do the Sartre and Nietzsche course since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the only two that I can't take in combination is 6, i.e. Sartre/Nietzsche and Philosophy of Sport*/Media Ethics.

*the name is misleading; it's not really focused on sport. I don't like sport.
Philosophy of language sounds like it could be very cool (if it's what I think it is, i.e linguistics related).
Yeah, I've always liked language, so I was thinking of doing it. All I've been hearing from people that have already done it though, is along the lines of "avoid it like the plague". Supposed to be really torturous. I really don't like Formal Logic (it's interesting, and fun when you get to a high enough level, but I'm not good enough at it to risk taking it to a higher level) though, so I think I'll be taking Language out of those two.

Incidentally, when do you think you'll have your Other FA done?

Bartender 05-11-2005 11:31 AM
Well, the latter half of #6 doesn't seem like it'd appease your interests :)
I would have thought that too, but I've read up on the Philosophy of Sport, and though I don't like Sport for the most part, the name of the module is misleading. It seems to be mostly about game theory - the nature of games and play (rules and so on), sportsmanship and honour, the ideology of Olympism (kalos kagathos), etc, which is all really interesting.

Plus, the guy who teaches both Philosophy of Sport and Media Ethics is my personal tutor, who is totally awesome.
Theories and Observations in Science (I'm seeing this as an elective, and not as a philosophy course... but I'm probably incorrect)
It's not actually, it's one of the Philosophy core module options. I'd have thought it'd be an elective too, but no. It covers, apparently;
# What is the relationship between scientific theories, models and the phenomena created in the lab?
# Have we inherited a distorted view of the relationship between theory and observation from the Logical Empiricists?
# How do scientific theories explain?
# What are laws of nature?
# How does evidence bear for or against a theory?
# What even makes a theory scientific?
I have scores of other possible modules from across the university to choose from; these here are just what I've narrowed it down to.

Illmatic 05-11-2005 11:32 AM

1. Formal Logic
2. Modern Philosophy (Hume, Leibniz)
3. Political Philosophy
4. Epistemology or Theories
5. Realism and Anti-Realism
6. Media Ethics and Philosophy of Sport

So Bartender, are you putting off all the math and science classes until the end of university?

Also AH, who is that in your avatar?

Firecracker 05-11-2005 11:40 AM

Oh sorry, i thought they were one, so yeah, the philosophy of religion. That sounds like it could be interesting.

Jom 05-11-2005 11:40 AM
/big post
Oh, well, in that case, I'd remove that philosophical-science course and replace it with the Media Ethics and Philosophy of Sport, then. If he's your personal tutor and is supposedly awesome, then at least you know you'd have a good instructor. From what you posted, that science course doesn't seem at all that interesting :-\

Bartender 05-11-2005 11:47 AM
? I don't have any maths or science classes to put off :) The closest thing we come to them (unless we choose to do electives in them, or do HPS-related modules) is Logic, and even then it only really resembles maths superficially (all the notation looks like equations and things).

Where in the hell are you going to University?

Math and science courses are a freaking requirement here.

Jom 05-11-2005 11:52 AM

Well, I wrote Ancient Philosophy because I just had that ridiculous classics class at uni, so that was what I was most familiar with. That, and I received an A on my final project (the imaginary-yet-plausible conversation between a Greek and a Roman), and I used the Nicomaechean Ethics as a source for my conversation.

So yeah, remove Ancient Philosophy and take Sartre and Nietzsche in its place. I found the classics philosophy the easiest part of the course, but that's not to say it was interesting.

EDIT:
Where in the hell are you going to University?
Bartender has only mentioned Leeds at least fifteen times over the course of two community threads :p

My avatar is that of a certain superhero.

/purposely vague

I have to head to work, so an early good night to the Europeans and a general adios to the NA'ers and the Aussies (who are probably still in slumber).

EDIT to Bartender's below post to me:

Ohhhh, I understand how it works now. When I come home, I'll try to fix my skeleton schedule for you.

Bartender 05-11-2005 11:56 AM
Where in the hell are you going to University?

Well I'm a single honours philosophy student. Why would I need to modules in maths and science?

Seems a bit odd to have required modules for all courses :-/

I probably would, but that's where the problem is. There are myriad rules to work through in choosing modules, one of which means that out of each numbered pair (except #6) I have to choose one of the two. So I have to take either Ancient Philosophy or Modern Philosophy, and can't just ignore both in favour of taking Sartre Nietzsche and Media Ethics/Philosophy of Sport.

It's America's way of ensuring that all students have a "well-rounded" education.

Sounds a bit like trying to defend everything and thus defending nothing to me, personally. People are talented at one thing, they should learn all that pertains to that and every subject that can help them succeed in that field. College is a place where you're supposed to learn what you WANT. Thank God I'm going to a school that doesn't require anything like that.
