Why the hell not?

soadrulez 09-19-2005 08:20 PM
I think that song is too scattered. It does have it's moments though.
i think it's amazing it goes heavy then acoustic harsh vocals then clean but at the end it all comes together the song is pure genius.
Why the hell not?
I can't think of a reason either, which is precisely why I probably will.

soadrulez 09-19-2005 08:24 PM
I'm getting pretty stoked. The big O is coming to not one, but two shows I'd be able to go to in November. I might just go to both.
their coming here to houston oct 21, ofcourse i already have my tickets it is gonna own. i went to sounds of the underground in dallas. there was a rain delay for an hour and so opeth's time was cut short so lamb of god can play their full set. opeth played two songs....deliverance and demon of the fall. man they get no respect they were the best band their hands down, but for some reason lamb of god headlined. lamb of god is good but they are not even worthy to step on the same stage as opeth.
lamb of god suck but and are not even worthy to step on the same stage as opeth.
Fix'd. When I saw them, I walked out laughing.

Det_Nosnip 09-19-2005 11:05 PM

Norma Jean was the band that made me laugh. I seriously sat there and just cackled throughout the whole set....

Anyways, back with the drumming debate...

Martin's work on "Baying of the Hounds" is some of the best stuff that he's done. I've always held the opinion that he shines during Opeth's lighter/proggier moments. He's not the best "metal" drummer I've ever heard, but he's one of my favorite prog drummers...see the difference? That's why the Dam nation album was the best by far....all prog. And, yes....there were much better moments on there than that silly ending section of Deliverance. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but I kinda feel that it is slightly overhyped as far as Martin's playing goes.

Oh, and as for the Moor vs Godhead's debate....I used to be a big fan of the Moor, but it's kind of lost its charm for me. The intro is great, don't get me wrong, and its a great tune, but Godhead's is alot more interesting IMO. I like the pace of it alot better, and the whole acoustic section kicks the Moor's ***. And no, I'm not talking about the "What would they care if I did stay" part...there's alot more to the acoustic section than that. The vocal harmonies when Mikael sings "Thought I could not leave this place on this imminent day...As I've reached the final dawn To what's gone astray" are just amazing....and "Searching My Way to perplexion..The gleam of her eyes, In that moment she knew...."

I guess that my problem with the Moor is that it kind of loses steam once it gets to the acoustic sections. Although dynamics and mood changes are good, they're also rather typical of Opeth's songwriting approach. Godhead's, on the other hand, manages to maintain the energy and emotional levels throughout the song despite the acoustic breaks, and is rather unique as far as Opeth tunes go despite having so many classic Opeth elements.
It sucks. Its the worst part of the song, its a good bass line but man does that tone suck...

Bleaks nothing special.

And "What would they care if I was gay, noone would know, hooooooomooooo" is a crappy vocal line.

:D Glad I got that off my chest...
Wow, you should take that Opeth avatar down right now.

Kidding, but Bleak is a classic. The opening riff with that dissonance at the end is friggin' awesome. The first verse isn't mind-blowing in any aspects, but it works well. The chorus is good stuff.. back to the verse.. chorus. The transition after the chorus repeat (3:10) is just wow. Riff after that is wow + great lyrics from now on. Especially when he says

"A liquid seeps from your chest
And drains me away "

Now to the mellower part with the E-bow. Great acoustic riffage, very eerie w/the E-bow. Next riff with the audible bass.. awesome, now the silence. AMAZING riff here, great bass line, singing, etc. Fade into distortion, yay. Solo, yay. 6:40+ is schweetness. Now the repeat.. I wish there were different lyrics here, but it works out to where they can transition to the ending of the song. Rockin' riff right here.. vox done. Very unique ending with the crazy distortion. Qualifies as a masterpiece in my book.

Anyways, I think I'm going to make a big list of Opeth songs from worst to best and my reasoning behind each song when I get the time.

On the subject of GR, I think it's a really good album, but not the best thing they've done by far.

1. Ghost of Perdition
2. Isolation
3. HF/ Reveries
4. Hours of Wealth
5. Atonement
6. Baying of the Hounds (Top 6 songs are between great and masterpiece)
7. The Grand Conjuration
8. Beneath the Mire (I don't like this one at all)

I think "Isolation Years" and "Hours of Wealth" are incredibly amazing songs. I love that new influence they show on H.O.W. But on I.Y. the part,:
"Can't forget the years, she's loooooooooost.:, is just amazing.
Reveries/HF is easily my fave song on the album, that's just pure genius.
I like the BENEATH THE MIRE intro though. The keyboard is orgasm-like.

Mizuzack 09-20-2005 02:58 AM

1. Hours of Wealth 9.5/10
2. HF/Reveries 9/10
3. Ghost of Perdition 8.5/10
4. Atonement 8.5/10
5. Isolation 8/10
6. Baying of the Hounds 8/10
7. The Grand Conjuration 7/10
8. Beneath the Mire 6/10

There's my order.

I currently have Morningrise, Still Life, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries and I can't even pick a favourite album, I am impressed so much by all of them.

Simon__Thats_All 09-20-2005 05:36 AM

None of you guys rate The Grand Conjuration?

Mizuzack 09-20-2005 05:44 AM
None of you guys rate The Grand Conjuration?
It's a good song imo, but doesn't have anything that really stands out, which is why I rated it low.

Simon__Thats_All 09-20-2005 05:48 AM

Fair enough. First time I listened to it I found it the most memorable track actually. I'm not sure exactly why. I remember it had an insane scream around the 5:40 mark, I think, but most tracks do. Great album though.

Agreed. Overall I give the album an 8/10. It's excellent, but not their best. I give that to either Blackwater Park or Still Life. Can't really decide.

yes I do
the scream after the very short fade out of the guitars owns my hairy bum
it's so good.

ghost of perdition is my favorite of the album though.

esp the
ghost of perdition
keeper of holy hordes
keeper of holy whores part

just insane

Simon__Thats_All 09-20-2005 06:05 AM

I have no idea what my favourite album is. I just bought like 5 in a week, and haven't given them all a thorough enough listen to decide. I remember them all being incredible, and all left me amazed that they're only a 4 piece.

the2stranger 09-20-2005 06:14 AM

Morningrise is my favorite :)

Simon__Thats_All 09-20-2005 06:16 AM
Morningrise is my favorite :)
I haven't been able to find Morningrise  When i get my credit card I'll probably just get it off the net.

the2stranger 09-20-2005 06:18 AM

I found it in my own cdstore.

the songwriting and the medieval feel of the album are great, the profucution is a bit of compared to their newer stuff, but that doesn't bother me.

black rose imortal is amazing, and I hope you will get the album soon :thumb:

Simon__Thats_All 09-20-2005 06:23 AM

Black Rose Immortal is a song I'm dying to hear. I've heard great things about it but just can't find it :upset: I'd ask someone to upload it, but besides the new upload rules, I wouldn't expect anyone to upload me a 20 minute song.

the2stranger 09-20-2005 06:27 AM

give me your e-mail adress, and I will uplaod it for you ( if YSI doesn't hate me:()

hey guys, i have a question. Do you guys think that the Martins and the rest of the band communicate to each other in English casually like while on tour? i mean i figure they probably would since both groups of members can speak english to some degree but i imagine it would be hard to understand the Martins when they speak english (they have a THICK accent) so i was just wondering if any body knew how they communicate to each other normally. Kind of a wierd question i know but while eating breakfast about an hour ago listening to Blackwater Park it kinda just randomly popped into my head and i figured this is the best place to ask lol

uh, all 5 speak good english, but I assume they just talk Sweish with eachtother. I mean if you went on tour, wouldn't you speak you r own language too?
when adressing the crowd it's different though

killa_bees77 09-20-2005 10:00 AM

well the Martins arent swedish, they speak spanish (they are both from Uruguay), and have you actually heard them talk english? they struggle a lot from every interview ive ever seen with them (check out Lamentations). The swedes in the group grasp english easier, but id imagine they probably talk to each other in english since the swedes arent fluent in spanish and vice versa. I just think it would be really hard to understand the Martins when talking english, but its not like its their fault any ways, you can tell they try really hard.

the2stranger 09-20-2005 10:07 AM

I never thought the Martin's had that much trouble with talking english (as I saw on the llamentations dvd)
but Ig guess, they all live in Sweden, so they should all know the language :-/
I'm not really sure about this, just my 2 cents :)

killa_bees77 09-20-2005 10:28 AM

yeah ur right, the Martins do live in sweden and im sure by now they can probably speak swedish farely well. I do know that Mike, on the other hand isnt very good at Spanish (he said he only knew a few words) lol itd be awesome to hear him try to speak spanish. :p

indeed. but I think Mikeal is already awesome because he writes quite complicated lyrics in a language that isn't his native one :)

an Opeth parody song in Spanish would be awesome though, wait
now that I think of it, didn't Mendez do vocals for another band he played with before Opeth?

SomeGuySomewhere 09-20-2005 04:05 PM

I'm troubled my fellow Opeth fans, a local drummer from my area of MA thinks Martins Lopez fails against the drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, and thinks that Opeth in general fails to the "they are no were near the talent level , song structure , or coplexity of a7x ." He is the drummer to this band - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=21028799&Mytoken=B6AE0AA7-C7AA-4D82-9591BF6D738804001776951968

Comments would be appreciated on this matter.
