I go back next monday

I'm getting all worried now though, I've got a guitar competition at the end of the month that I was planning on playing 'Altitudes' by Jason Becker for. The problem is that I'd planned on practicing alot over the holidays but I've barely even touched my guitar, so I'm going to have a busy few weeks :(

NP: Freak Kitchen - 'Silence'
Haha, I have the same problem. Only with YTSE Jam. It's easier than Becker though.

Jom 01-03-2006 10:32 AM

I need it to hold off from snowing until I have to go back to school. There's nothing I hate more than driving in inclement weather conditions.

that solo is FUKKED up.

Im sure the fretting patterns arent that hard, its the 220 bpm @ 16ths that scares the bejesus outta me

Cain 01-03-2006 10:55 AM

Hey, I haven't been around for a while so don't pile on if I'm asking an old-news question...

but why is Bartender no longer a mod?

Try learning John Coltrane's solo on Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk."

That's just 16ths at 154 bpm, but the intervals and phrases he uses just makes it beyond impossible.

I have no clue, my guess would be how rarely he's ever on lately.

Who, Bartender's not a mod anymore?

Jom is such a whiner though mang, he wouldn't make a good mod!!!!1

Sorry, it'll cost you $8.90 as it's in the latest issue of Guitar One.

EDIT: upon examination, it doesnt look like any hard stretches or anything. The only thing that might take a bit are the finger rolls. I hate those fukkers

I'm a bit more concerned with the position changes. And yeah, those nimble arpeggiations are friggin' ridonkulus.

Listen to the recording. It's just blah, makes me wonder why I would even try. At the very least, you'll never be able to cop Coltrane's feel, as he plays all his phrases legato whereas the arrangement for guitar neccessitates some form of alternate picking, unless you're Stanley Jordan.

good point..

i mean it DOES look like a solo the whole song, but to get it up to speed wouldnt be the problem. It would be the feel, as you stated, that would take the longest

Jom 01-03-2006 12:04 PM

For those asking about Bartender:

He hasn't been restored back to supermod after Chad got a hold of his account. As a result, he hasn't been on AIM and MSN. Also, he has finals after the holiday, so he's studying for those. mx just needs to e-mail him his new credentials before he can be restored. If not mx, then DBJ can do it... but since he hasn't been on IM programs lately, he hasn't been restored yet.

He'll be back, like Ye Olde Ah-nold.

/Mythbuster++

Cain 01-03-2006 12:23 PM

No, Coltrane did play sax, but his solo is arranged for guitar in Guitar One this month. :p They do that sort of thing sometimes.

The fact that phrases like that are done so easily and fluidly on the sax makes reproducing the solo a waste of time on guitar: I can only see it as a study of jazz/blues theory and phrasing/note choices. That was my point. Those phrases are impossible to get on guitar the way Coltrane does it on sax.

what about with a synth pup :naughty:

i think it COULD be great practice. You would need a good ear, and a handle on dynamics

Oh yeah, definitely, but I'd never try to play it note-for-note live or anything. The pace is so fast that you'd have to be really clinical about it, unless you were very good, in which case you should just make up your own solo in the true spirit of bebop.

Shattered_Future 01-03-2006 01:12 PM

My dad has a DVD with live Coltrane on it, as well as all of his CDs, I believe.

The man is a musical genius.

I deleted everything from my iPod today, and replaced it all with M4A format songs. 300 extra songs on the iPod.

I'm gonna have to do that. I can't tell the difference in sound quality anyway.

Shattered_Future 01-03-2006 01:24 PM

There isn't at all. In fact, M4A might sound a little bit better, even.

Illmatic 01-03-2006 01:24 PM

Could someone key me in as to what you're talking about? Does m4a take up less space?
Does m4a take up less space?

Yes it does

MBS 01-03-2006 01:37 PM

I think m4a takes up less space, I'm not sure though. I know when I had my setting on high quality mp3s, some songs took up more than 7 megs, which is rediculous because there wasn't much of a difference anyway.

No...Ballard County is borderline redneck, but it's that way because

a) the county is poor and lacking resources
and
b) kids here are idiots and wear their "GIT-R-DONE" shirts because they feel they have to fit the stereotype.

Paducah (20 minutes away) is a bigger town, and a little more civilized than this whole county...

"fit the stereotype"? I don't quite follow. If they want to fit the stereotype, that would mean that the stereotype actually exists, just like how black people 'act black'.

exactly. They are rednecks. They are proud of being rednecks. There are real rednecks you know *cough*Bible Belt*cough*
