I just realized something I hate. WHen people say that a musician was really good when it was someone who was only influential, not actually that talenented. I was just thinking of those old blues guitarists who are good but not amazing but then people go insane about them. Rant of the hour is complete.
I completely agree with what your saying, I even feel that way about Jimmy Page, I dunno, maybe I haven't heard enough Zeppelin, but he just seems so overrated. |

A lot of people feel that way about Page. I personally like him, wouldn't call him the best quitarist ever or anything, but I think he's very good. |
Zeppelin is, in my opinion, overrated and overplayed. Surely their classification as the first heavy metal band is stupid genre-tossing gone awry. I could never get into them at all.
Page was also easily the least talented of the Yardbird Three of Clapton, Beck and Page. Too bad he's sitting on mountains of cash while Beck still struggles just to get a new hotrod to play with. |
Beck is infinitely cooler than Page though, money or not. He's got the whole lone wolf thing going.
|
That's what I'm talking about! Beck is actually the reason I started playing guitar. I heard one of his songs off the album "Flash"...an inferior album by his usual standard, but still that song "Gets Us All In The End" has got some unbelievable wailing on it. I was like "Holy ****, I've got to learn how to do that!" His recent excursions into techno have been very very interesting as well. His command over the Strat and the whammy bar is out of this world. It's cool that you like him, Bartender: I hear he's not that well-known even in England.
|
I would say that Jeff is farily well known.
|
I've no idea how well known he is over here. I assumed reasonably so, since he's English, but I never really thought about it.
I started listening to him a while ago, after downloading one of his techno-influenced instrumentals (So What) on a whim. |
I would say that Jeff is farily well known.
Among us and middle-aged folks, yes. Sadly, your average rock fan has heard of Clapton and Page, not Beck, I should think. |

The first song, "What Mama Said," has the most badass two-handed riff on the face of the planet, played by Jennifer Batten. It's actually one of the coolest riffs I've ever heard, and I wish they played that stuff at all those crappy high school dances instead of hip-hop junk. |

I'm 17. |

I only actually own two of his albums, one from a long time ago (Beck-Ola) and one of his more recent (techno-ish) ones (You Had It Coming). I need to get more, though. |

Haha, yeah, I meant "us" as in people who are musicians or avid listeners of all sorts of good music. We would have heard of him I think, but the average listener hasn't. I usually get blank stares when I ask friends if they've heard him. |

Oh ok. |
Beck is truly a master songwriter, in all seriousness, I think he is the most talented musician of all time.

I smell a poser. |
Poser, I've been listening to Beck since the second grade thank you very much.
|
Heheh, this is where it gets good.

Ya sure you have, conviently mixed with an affinity for Korn and Linkin Park. |

and his 164 iq. |
Hey, I listened to Tom Petty and loved the crap out of the Eagles when I was in first grade, but in ninth grade, what was it? Limp Bizkit. We just grow out of our trends and rediscover what was always good. It is possible to stray away to some trendy stuff from truly good stuff for a while.

The way this kid "stretches" the truth, makes such a situation unlikely. |

I don't think he was in the chat room last night... |
I'm off to bed, I think, so keep it moderately friendly, even if you hate each other (for the sake of not being banned, if nothing else).
I just heard my first Tom Petty song yesterday actually (Mary Jane's Last Dance), and I like it rather a lot. |

I think you're just giving him too hard a time because he's not ashamed about liking nu-metal. Sometimes I wonder if he really deserves your whipping-post-in-chief designation. Feel free to cite examples to explain it to me. BTW, he is also pretty young compared to some of us. We don't really have such an advanced musical sense when we're younger. |

Man, it would explain every thing if you were in the chat room last night... It has nothing to do with liking nu-metal. |

Bobo, stop being a hostile *******, I was in no way trying to glorify myself, as you seem to think, you said something that was completely wrong and I argued a point, and you should have pointed out that it was obviously a lie because IQ tests are capped at 150, I was trying to make a point in saaying that someone with a ridiculously high IQ can fail because they have ADD.
Anyway back to the Beck talk. #1 how the **** does me liking nu-metal mean I can't like Beck, do you realize how much different music I like, I listen to bluegrass, thrash, rap, alternative, progressive, indie, nu-metal, some death and black (just got into it). #2 I have liked Beck for the majority of my life, ever since my brother got me Odelay for my brithday when I was about 8 years old. Anyway I first liked Beck because I just thought he sounded cool, but more recently I started listening to him again, and I relized how talented he is. He can freaking make the simplest riff sound amazing. His music has such a wide variety to it, compare Devil's Hair Cut to Where It's At to New Pollution (names correct? I lost the CD case a while ago). About 3 years ago I went to a concert of his, there was some dumb band playining, and they were pretty much aweful, but he made it amazing, in the middle of their performance he went on the stage and started breakdancing, it was truly the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Also, I have a question, can Beck read music? I told my friend that Beck was so much better than Led Zeppelin and he said I'm wrong because Beck can't read music. |

*ducks back into thread temporarily*
That's the wrong Beck. He's talking about Beck Hanson, rather than Jeff Beck. I made the same mistake myself when I was first getting in to the two of them. |
By the way, Bobo, I think I understand now what's going on...saw a little blurb in report questions thread...hmmm.
Hehehe its funny |
Not the right Beck, eh? Figures. I figured something was up when he said "Odelay."
And when he said that he breakdanced at concert. Jeff Beck never. |
Both Becks are incredibly talented, though. Just unfortunate that they can be mixed up so easily.
|
Yeah, that's about right.
Still have no clue how to invite myself into this R+M chat... |
Jeez, Bartender, it's got to be nearly 6:50 AM. :p
Goodnight. |
:(.
My computer clock says 6:49 actually, as I type this. Goodnight. |
