Miles Davis and John Coltrane are probably what you should hear first if you want to try out jazz music but they are hardly the best, they are actually quite boring now. Get into a bit of Sonny Sharrock, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson, Archie Sheep, Förklädd Gud and Grant Green etc.

I mostly listen to free jazz at this point in terms of my jazz listenings.

Free Jazz

Excursions 12-10-2006 01:43 AM

What free jazz have you heard? The Coltranes at some point in their career released jazz that would be considered free jazz, Alice probably more than John though but most of his post Love Supreme records were free jazz orientated.

TheBigMachine 12-10-2006 01:48 AM

Whats free jazz?

Excursions 12-10-2006 01:54 AM

You can't really explain what free jazz is as such. It's probably something like music that is extremely different and breaks down the normal conventions of jazz.

A lot of people don't like a good deal of free jazz because it's pretty hard for a fan of conventional music to like straight off the back.

TheBigMachine 12-10-2006 01:59 AM

Fair enough then

If John Zorn is at all representative of the sound, I never plan on listening to it.

Firecracker 12-10-2006 01:59 PM

Free jazz ftw
I'm learning jazz piano, then I would be totally hip.

Sweet. I'll have to get it too then.

on a side note I just got into Saosin like 3 years later than everyone else.

Laura: Jazz Piano is awesome. I'm so jealous my roommate can listen to music and play along with solos even after like 2 takes.

Yeah well, I always see them tossed around with screamo, but then a few days ago I heard them on a comp and was like...this isn't screamo, wtf? So I d/led and it's pretty decent. :)

Firecracker 12-10-2006 02:38 PM

Ahh not that kind of listening skills. I can never do that. I can hear something then, play it, after finding the starting note. Not that well though. But that is serious talent.

I got into Saosin about 2 weeks ago. :p

Weak email, I know, I made it years ago. Precciate it Vinny. I'll be back later myself. How's everyone doing anyway!?

Kif 12-10-2006 02:44 PM

That kind of reminds me of one of my old music tech teachers. He was an absolute legend, and he let us listen to music in class on the big stereo system, and he'd just play along with it on the piano after listening to it for a while. He did some charity thing as well where he played for a certain number of hours straight, although I can't remember how long it was.

Firecracker 12-10-2006 02:54 PM

My music teacher has to explain something for hours, and he has to have loads of musical examples, which just ends up with him jamming with himself on the piano, carrying on for ages, making up all these suspension chords and cadences on the piano. Funny stuff. He thinks he's so good, he is, but it's still funny.

Their debut album isn't too good. One or two tracks stand out to me, but the whole album kinda sounds the same to me ... :(

And about the roommate comment...I kinda forgot it was a new year and all that...

Kev, Ribbons And Sugar is by far their best album.

Surtr 12-10-2006 04:16 PM
