Anyway, I'm designing a dynamic traffic control system. With a u-controller, I'll be checking on each crossing for cars, so it clears roads if one of the streets is extremely crowded and another is pretty much empty. Now, to see this I need a sensor that tells me when there's a) one car/few cars, b) up to 5 cars/kind of crowded or c)10 cars/very crowded. For this I need, at least, one transmitter and at least, 3 movement detector circuits that give a binary signal to the u-controller, and transmitted wireless to the CPU to clear streets, use timed traffic control (for very crowded streets) or stop streets.

So I need to use either

a)Camera on top of traffic light, process with a DSP
b)Infrared sensors
c)EM sensors

so basically I want an opinion or better ideas : |||

well no matter what you use you'll have to do some sort of signal processing i would think. IR would be prone to blur I would think depending on the angle of viewing and such, and cameras could be difficult to deal with for the same sort of reasons. I think if you can develop model training for cameras and IR equally though IR might be easier...but it would be worth noting that the spread of color in a normal camera may make distinguishing cars as objects easier. On the other hand, if cars stand out clearly in IR shots, then the DSP is even easier on those because you can just choose a directional filter and the color they should be on your scale.

It might be worth looking into beam forming and array processing though.
