Describe an experience of cultural difference, positive or negative, you have had or observed. What did you learn from it?
My cultural journey began at the State Solo and Ensemble Competition for my school’s brass quintet. As the tuba player, I caught the interest of judge and UW band director, Dr. McDavid, who was very complimentary. Weeks later, he suddenly asked if I wanted to travel to China for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Orchestra. I leaped at the opportunity to represent my country and visit a land I never expected to experience. The first night was nothing more than a late dinner and sleeping on a rock hard mattress; however, the proceeding days provided numerous adventures. From a trip to the impressive Great Wall where we proudly played our music, to the remarkable experience of being the first American group to ever perform in Tiananmen Square, China was a cultural revelation for me. Not only did my trip to China help me be more thankful for what I have, but I was struck by what it meant to be the minority in a place where I really stood out. I was in a situation where I had to adapt without speaking the native language and people saw me in a much different light than they did at home. Basic things like ordering a meal, getting directions, and taking a taxi became a struggle. One aspect was especially eye opening: I suddenly realized how minority groups at home might feel on a daily basis. Though it may sound trivial, I really believe my outlook on life was positively affected. My short answer essay question, what do you guys think? |
