Nah it's not a waste, it sounds like crap and I'd never use it for playing on. It does serve as a very shiney clock though. I got the mechanism from school when we made clocks (this was years ago), but they're really not too hard to find.

Having said that, I'm not sure where you'd find them. Cheap and badly made but common.

You can get clock mechanisms at Hobby Lobby for sure, and probably any other craft/hobby store.
