I can't find it and I don't feel like spending $10 to some slimy website for it. Terror Firma was probably the best album from 2005.
I'll check it out. Never heard of it.

Rams 04-02-2009 06:25 PM
welcome joe, tommy... joe i dont know why you cant start threads, i think you have to be a forums member for a few days or something.

have you checked strange journey yet?

ATM, you should def go see IT... i hear his live set is awesome.
Been through it like 10 times in just 3-4 days.

My conservative blurb:

4 Stars/ 8.5

Production: A (3.7/4)
Does Kno even have a shelf as a producer? Small deductions for the decisions to throw in the remixes and live clip of "Lynguistics" in the middle of the album. Also the "Dance for Me" remix didn't score any points. These samples/hooks are awesome.

Lyricism: A- (3.2/4)
Flow: A- (1.6/2)
Mr. SOS and Slug top the rest for guest spots. Of course.. Natti and Deacon are entertaining.

Overall: A- (8.5/10)
This album falls a step behind their last two based solely on the remixes and guest spots (which aren't necessarily bad). Volume One has better highlights though. "Don't Leave (When Winter Comes)" and "Never Come Down" are absolute classics and song of the year candidates. "Move", "Hypnotized", "Die For You", "The Distance", and "Broken Van (Thinking of You)" are all great tracks as well. Basically, take all the new material from the three members and you'd have another modern classic from the most dependable hip hop group of the decade.
rateyourmusic is awful for Blues, Reggae, and Hip-Hop
Reggae, it respects Abyssinian's Satta Massagana more than any Marley record. That's good. They hardly have anyone over there listening to reggae though.

Hip Hop though... RYM is real dependable. Best source I've found online pending on the quality of you folks here.

kingsoby1 04-02-2009 08:44 PM

rym has got a great hiphop community... im basically yanking some concepts from over there and improving it.

Tyler 04-02-2009 08:54 PM

their forums are awful but i quite like their databasing/cataloguing system, which is really all anyone should use it for anyways. it's terrible for discussion of any sort

kingsoby1 04-02-2009 08:57 PM

yeah not a big fan of the forums, except for random posting in the hiphop thread.

StalkingButler 04-02-2009 09:00 PM

Yep, you guys got it all right. Been there since December 2006 and only check the Hip Hop Thread and the hip hop album of the week topics in their discussion section.

CaptainWaits 04-02-2009 09:33 PM

Stopped by the CD store today, and decided to pick up the Black Star album. I hadn't heard anything on it prior, but so far it's one solid album. I have a couple of Talib albums, I like him a lot, but I haven't gotten into much Mos Def.

Anyways, Black Stars sweet

kingsoby1 04-02-2009 09:38 PM

definitely dude, it's excellent.

Catch A Fire and Exodus are rated higher than Satta Massagana. They have no love for U-roy and some how think Sinéad O'Connor and David Lindley are reggae artists. Plus there's about 10 ratings for Sly & Robbie stuff.
Hip Hop though... RYM is real dependable. Best source I've found online pending on the quality of you folks here.
They dislike anything remotely popular and love crap like Prolyphic and Animator.

illmitch 04-02-2009 10:35 PM

hatred of popular rap isn't limited to RYM, though. look at how much hate Lil' Wayne gets here - let alone artists like Jeezy or Rich Boy (i'm a fan of both rappers).

Rams 04-02-2009 10:50 PM

I didn't mean to imply they were the only ones, just that they grossly overlook anything remotely popular.

StalkingButler 04-02-2009 10:55 PM

Oh, I was looking at my friends rating average for Satta Massagana over Marley, my bad. I usually test RYM by that, since I had selected those. (Which is an awesome feature if you have a great base of friends --- I have over 20 quite dependable and different minded/located hip hop fans in my list [awesome resource])

and I didn't think Prolyphic and Animator was crap.. one of my favorite albums of last year. Just cracked my top five even.

illmitch 04-02-2009 11:00 PM

yeah I know what you mean, the anti-mainstream trend is understandable but depressing.

niobium 04-02-2009 11:04 PM

rym is good if you know how to work it

CaptainWaits 04-02-2009 11:07 PM

How's allmusic for being accurate on hip-hop? I use that generally when I'm not sure on artists or albums....but a lot of the artists I'm educated on they often give some crazy ratings.

pixiesfanyo 04-03-2009 12:33 AM

allmusic is terrible for ratings. the reviews and information are usually quality though.

pixiesfanyo 04-03-2009 12:34 AM
I didn't mean to imply they were the only ones, just that they grossly overlook anything remotely popular.
i guess. its just like anything you can't take the ratings too seriously. if you find a user that loves hip-hop usually their reviews are pretty accurate.

Tyler 04-03-2009 02:39 AM

I can't get LL Cool J's "Around the Way Girl" out of my head. Track is so dope.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdxlFcZjBvw

I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings
At least two pair
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude
That's all I need to get me in a good mood
She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang
I love it when a woman ain't scared to do her thing
Standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop
Once she gets pumping its hard to make the hottie stop

Yeah it's great, I love the Mary Jane Girls sample.

I'm really digging Otha Fish from the first Pharcyde album lately. Such a great beat.
