Quick Geezer question, does he play with or without a pic?
Quick Geezer question, does he play with or without a pic?
Here's a quote from http://www.black-sabbath.com/interviews/butler96.html

Geezer was asked about his bass playing.
You're one of the few players who switches between pick and finger style playing. What made you decide to explore both techniques, and how often do you use each of them?

With the Ozzy stuff I use the pick quite a lot, because I'm doing all of Bob Daisley's (Ozzy's original bassist) bass lines, and he plays permanently with a pick, and I think it sounds better with a pick. Plus it's easier to play (laughs)! If you want a more attacking sound or a faster one, if you're playing with your fingers it gets too muffly if you go to fast, so I like to get more definition by using a pick. Because I practice a lot on guitar now, I'm getting used to using a pick. Before I couldn' t do it.

Its almost as if its a second ordinary guitar
That is probably because he played rythym guitar before he joined sabbath. is it just me or does the bass lines in sabbath's songs get less and less important (for lack of a better word) as the albums go in. On the first few the bass stands out but it kind of fades into the background as time goes on.

rippa32 09-10-2005 08:05 PM

Ive noticed that too. Its a shame really. Although you do hear it every now and then, the intro to TV Crimes is a memorable one.

dehumaniser generally has great Geezer basslines all the way through, i think there's some great bass in Computer God.

/bumpage of thread after a few days

Jude 09-15-2005 02:04 PM
Geezer's playing is very doom-y sounding, like a giant black cloud is floating overhead.
The bass tone on Sabbra Cadabra is currently my favorite bass tone ever. It just sounds so perfectly fat and groovy.

Josh 09-15-2005 03:26 PM

Sabbra Cadabra is just generally brilliant, like the rest of that album

rippa32 09-15-2005 08:37 PM

I have been away 5 days I come back and theres been only three new posts, what is happening to this thread? I hope it doesn't die. Anyway yes Sabbra Caddabra is great. Has anyone heard the Metallica cover? I don't mind it.

Yessssss. SBS > all other Sabbath, except maybe Sabotage.

shadow_stalker 09-16-2005 02:27 PM

I thought Sabotage was weak considering what high hopes i had for it.

rippa32 09-16-2005 05:57 PM

Im thinking of avoiding Technical Ecstasy as well, Never Say Die! might be a future purchase though.

shadow_stalker 09-17-2005 03:54 AM

Tony Martin's new album is out in November for anyone that is interested.

Whats Martin's solo stuff like?

rippa32 09-17-2005 04:41 AM

Well according to Brum not as heavy as ye olde Black Sabbath but still **** good.

it's weird how it has some of A National Acrobat (i think) in the middle of it, but it's still good.

Looking forward to Dragonforce Titch?

rippa32 09-17-2005 05:57 AM

It doesn't it just sounds a bit like A National Acrobat, this was the same In the orginal Black Sabbath version. I think, the only copy I have of that is a tape copied from my guitar teachers vinyl and its an awful quality tape, so I hardly ever listen to it.

dr._feelgood 09-17-2005 02:20 PM

Is Sabotage a good album? The only song I've heard off it is Symptom Of The Universe, and I was wondering if most of the songs on Sabotage sound like that.

It's a pretty heavy album. The first side is incredible, the second side isn't as fantastic but still really good. It's very hard to find from what I've heard (I DLed it)

Brew 09-17-2005 02:45 PM

Its a highly underrated album.

Megalomania is one of the best songs Sabbath have ever done IMO.

Blow on a Jug is a nice comical bonus aswell.

Steer clear of Technical Ecstacy. Dirty Women is the only track worth paying for.

wtf stfu

Dirty Women is a bit poor, good for a single though.

Gypsy, All Moving Parts (Stand Still), Back Street Kids, She's Gone and Rock n Roll Doctor are all great songs.

rippa32 09-17-2005 09:03 PM

I like back street kids, its the only one ive heard from that album. But if you say alot is good I might get it.

Brew 09-18-2005 03:44 AM

Its Alright is another great song on that album, sung by Bill Ward.

If YSI wasn't banned on here I'd upload a few songs from the album for you as a sampler.

rippa32 09-18-2005 04:39 AM

When was it banned and why?

Brew 09-18-2005 07:34 AM

MX himself doesn't want illegal file-sharing going on in his forums, read the announcement at the top of the forums for more info.

I find most of the album formulaic and boring, like they had just lost their muse. Dirty Women was the one exception...I dunno. Never Say Die! is a good comeback though. Especially Junior's Eyes.

As a follow up to Sabotage it is a pretty weak album, but by itself its pretty solid. Almost a stepping stone to the greatness that was Never Say Die!

Never Say Die! was great.

Brew 09-18-2005 01:05 PM

Its tied with Vol.4 as my fave. Ozzy-era Sabbath album.

rippa32 09-19-2005 06:53 AM

Mine Is probably Master Of Reality, and I dont even own it. I have all the songs on a couple of best of's except for After Forever and some other one I can't remember. I think it's Solitude.

EDIT: It is Solitude, but I also do not have Orchid.

shadow_stalker 09-20-2005 11:27 AM

I only like about the first 10 seconds of Orchid, i think it gets pretty crap after that
