i might even like revival more than helicopter not sure

'Desire Lines' and 'He Would Have Laughed' are my favs, pretty much all of it rules though. i listened to and liked microcastle/weird era but never gave it many listens, it just never clicked. really enjoyed the new one though, and will probably listen to their older stuff more now.

cbmartinez 12-29-2010 09:21 PM

yeah microcastle was good but i think it was overhyped because i felt like nothing ever happened just overshadowed everything else. the first three songs or whatever were good agoraphobia, little kids, never stops but it had so much filler. i love that this one is more upbeat, cox's vocal melodies are fantastic, im glad he doesnt rely on that constipated moan so much anymore. songwriting is just so tight. desire lines is fantastic too

horseypie 12-29-2010 09:33 PM

the filler and experimental stuff is the only problem with cryptograms, if there wasnt an ambient track between each song itd be my favourite album. cryptograms is such an awesome song. i havent given halcyon digest much of a listening to really, but i do love microcastle as well

cbmartinez 12-29-2010 09:48 PM

yeah i felt exactly the same way as i did about cryptograms as i did microcastle. there were a few songs that were far better than the rest. this seems like the first full album of great shit

Txus 12-29-2010 11:17 PM

Crystal Castles
Joy Orbison
Teengirl Fantasy
Warpaint
No Age

i never got the filler claims with microcastle. what doesn't work about the tracks between little kids and nothing ever happened? they make nothing ever happened

cbmartinez 12-30-2010 01:40 AM

theres like that four song run in the middle where its just cox self-indulging on halfassed ideas, some are better than others but the whole middle of the album drags and prevents it from being so good

sweboy 12-30-2010 04:28 PM

Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here?

robertsona 12-30-2010 05:46 PM

@sweboy: yeahhh. awesome.

currently digging the s/t compilation by cLOUDDEAD. pretentious and ridiculous and all that but i love it so much. can't believe i hadn't heard it before.

on thread's note, halcyon is great, although a few songs i sort of tune out during (some of the more 'bland' (this is harsh; none of them are bad) pop songs like 'don't cry') a full listen. however some of them just blow me away. 'helicopter', 'earthquake', 'coronado', 'desire lines'; all amazing.

i liked microcastle and knew it would grow on me; it did. last summer i thought of it as one of the best albums of the decade, maybe ever. i found it had this really engrossing and almost sort of frightening 'narrative' to it and the songs you mentioned were totally essential to that (although the self-titled track was always my favorite bar maybe 'nothing ever happened'; how could you hate that one 8(? beautiful)--especially the three "short" songs that some consider filler. they gave me the impression of cox losing his mind and going deeper and deeper into his own hole (and then 'nothing ever happened' was acceptance (denial?) or something, idk). something that i got from pink floyd's 'the wall' when i was like 10 or whatever and fell in love with that record. i don't really get that from microcastle anymore but still consider it a great record.

cryptograms is awesome too and i love the experimental shit. how can you not love 'white ink'? still blows my mind. those ones perfectly offset the more poppy shit.

cbmartinez 12-30-2010 06:35 PM

i dig white ink a lot actually, more than any of the filler on micro

Txus 12-30-2010 07:03 PM

Halcyon might be my favorite Deerhunter album so far...it's fucking awesome in every way.
