What does the quartet consist of? And I'm assuming it's some sort of Django tribute? If so, cool cool. Too much Jazz for me though.

Vibraphone, Piano, Bass, Drums. One of the pieces on it is a piece called "Django" which is kind of a tribute, but everything else on isn't really related.

Jazz owns you and you know it ;)

It's because you have bad tastes.

Truth. Too bad they broke up.

Dear Joel,

you suck at CDs. I can never respect you if you actually got Barry Manilow

Love, Andy

Mmm, what is a vibraphone?

Psh, well how lame. Naming it that and not being a tribute :(

Psh, no. Jazz is lame. Except I did find this Latin Jazz artist on my network last night who I like.

Don't be a girl, Andy. A good song is a good song no matter who sings it. And Barry Manilow is actually a good singer wa hey.

Well that one song is. It's a really cool tune too.

Dude you have no idea. Maybe playing it helps, but there's something about jazz tunes that is unlike everything else in the world. Crazy awesome changes + improv = omgosh.

Dear Joel,

i am all for good songs, but Barry Manilow has none.

Dear Everyone,

Christie Front Drive is better than any band you are currently listening to

Oh ok, I thought those were just a differnt type of xylophone, I've seen those before. Played em too I think.

Eh, that's exactly it. The improv is so self indulgent it's not worth listening to. I mean, I love jamming, and I do jam using some Jazz styling...but I can't listen to Jazz or Jam bands...playing is a different story.

Andy: I've not heard, but I'm listening to 3EB (still).

Mute Print 01-17-2006 06:14 PM

I need to get more Christie Front Drive. All I have by them is their split with Boys Life.

Yeah they're pretty sweet.

"It's so self-indulgent I can't listen to it"? More like "I don't feel like listening to how these dudes are so amazing at interpreting these chord changes"!

Yeah, there was a dude at my school who was amazing at them...two mallets (that's the term, right?) per hand and such.

Eh, true also. I don't care how they do it...I care how I do it.

What's awesome about vibes is that really standard techniques like two mallets per hand are really impressive to the uneducated ;)

Well ok, but how do you get better? By listening. Nobody becomes a great musician by not listening to how other people do things.

Oh shush...it sounded fantastic too...I think he went to music school on scholarship.

True, but I have no real interest in learning how to play a style that doesn't appeal to me much. Any Jazz I have an interest in playing I do listen to. Like the ride patterns they use and such...I listen to Jazz to get those down because I like to use them. But in general I don't find it to be good listening.

Hey if he's good then that's awesome. But seriously the four mallet thing is totally standard, I know some cats who learned it right off the bat when they started playing.

Yeah, it's all good.

oic...so what is non-standard? Like 8?

Uh, there's some five and six stuff but the more you add the harder it is to play melodic lines. Four is the best I think.

Well it just depends on what you're playing. Like if I'm comping then I use four but I might drop two for my solo depending on the tempo.

Hi Rissa... I'm always around, I was just gone for December!
