apparently over in britain librarians are being encouraged by the school board to get rid of any literature that isn't "modern" enough to appeal to teenagers, including shakespeare and the like.
if it wasn't enough that teachers are often "encouraged" to give failing students a passing mark so they can easily shuffle them through the system until they reach a year they simply can't deal with and leave you gotta wonder if this generation is doomed, I suppose every generation says that about the next idk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fbYCCyUxt8 old school TISM is always good for a spin |
Humanity has been on an overall downward slide for a very long time.
|
Shakespeare is awesome. King Lear, The Tempest, Macbeth and Hamlet are great works. When Librarians mean 'modern stuff' what do they mean? Like Postmodern/Modernist lit? Coz that shiz can be way more taxing than Shakespeare.

**** i got messyyyyyyy last night
|
It's Evan's birthday btw.
|
It's true, a lot of modern work is style over substance.
Shakespeare is excellent educational material, it's just a stumbling block for a lot of students because the language is so out of date that everything needs a citation to explain it. It's not the only thing worth studying, but it's a good one. |
happy bday evan : )
|
Yeah gg Evan, have a good one :chug:.

I think it's the timeless qualities of the works that make them the most suitable to teach. |
That and because there's such a huge resource of past pedagogy to reference when teaching them.
Most of the time kids don't get too deep into the stuff anyway. I did latin and classical greek in school, it was hefty stuff. Things that like where you have to think hard are good for your mind, same as Shakespeare, the fact that you have to do a lot of research just to understand historical context of expressions and the density of the language. Kids these days seem to read less, which is a shame, because reading is one of the most essential things to making a smart child, if not the most essential. It was pretty poor form being in high school and there were still kids who could only read out loud one word at a time. You know what I mean? When they read and they don't skim ahead and take in blocks at a time they're like "The. dog. was. walking. down. the. street." Give a hoot, read a book. |
I'm going back to playing union next season, trialling with Gordon it looks like.
Dude I pretty much live in Gordon On the topic of Shakespeare, I'm finishing up reading Bill Bryson's newest book, which is about Shakespeare. Not as funny as his other stuff but really interesting. Has given me a greater appreciation of Shakespeare and his work. |
I wish my uni had a rugby team.
I don't think we can though because technically we're a private college not a real university so we'd have to play in a community league or something. And we'd get nailed by real teams I suppose. What if they put all the creative colleges in a league? AIM vs COFA vs Conservatorium vs AADA vs NIDA etc. Haha. |
That would be so fucking funny.
|
I reckon so.
I think AIM would do alright. We have a hefty contingent of pacific islanders, enough said. |

when I say "modern" I mean the removal of any books that are old and unappealing to today's generation so anything that's not Harry Potter I guess |
Harry Potter is lame and all but at least it gets little kids reading and hopefully they'll develop an interest in reading more things.
|
what
i thought harry potter was awesome...i loved those books |
Well lots of people like it but she's just not my kind of author.

I love that song, as in the Girl Talk one.
But my favourite GT song is third track on new album, name escapes me right now. |
Harry Potter is decent.
Well compared to female sex fantasy Twilight bs. |
Anyone who likes fantasy/weird fiction/sci-fi/steampunk/whatever should read any of China Mieville's Perdido Street Station, Iron Council or The Scar books. Some of the best stuff I've ever read.

Did any of you guys ever like Pollyanna?

|
Hmm just sitting up listening to songs, picking good easy ones to transcribe and teach to people.
Been brainstorming price rates for my CD printing/packaging business when it kicks off, surfing the tele. Can't be up too late though because I hope to work tomorrow night and have to ring early to try and get a shift. |

I was doing long-distance passes with an 8kg medicine-ball yesterday trying to get it back, lol. |
Did any of you guys ever like Pollyanna?
I remember Cinnamon Lip. Last fm always recommended them to me because I like Violetine, but I've never followed that up. Maybe I will soon... |
Pollyanna reminds me of triple-J's glory days in the 90s, and I am saddened by what it is now.
|
Make sure to practise some drop goals with that medicine ball too.
Yeah Pollyanna were cool, you should check out Matt Handley & The Dagger Stares too, that was the frontman from Pollyanna doing a solo project of sorts. |
lol. Dunning is a machine of a man.

Dunning is a unit.
Rocky Elsom is heavy machinery too. |
I hate Optus. I want to throw a truck at them.
|
Telstra aren't much good either.
No win. |
Telstra sucks. Optus are decent.
|
Telstra are fine until something has a problem, and then you're rooted because their customer service is poor beyond humour.

vodafone has worst coverage in the world
