But I don't, so Winter is better.

Wintermute 09-13-2004 03:40 AM

Hah, I was in Finland earlier this year, now THERE is a country with SEASONS!

In summer the climate is similar to the UK, except the sun doesn't set until 1am, and it rises again at 3am. And in the 2 hours in between, it's not actually dark anyway, it's a sort of light twilight.

In winter it's pitch black by 4pm, and temperatures get down to -30C, pretty much all Finnish houses have triple glazed windows and a sauna, one of the people I stayed with lived in a one bedroom flat, but it had a sauna.

People just avoid going out in winter, but the party never seems to stop in summer!

gaslight 09-13-2004 03:45 AM

^ Haha wow. I would go over there to check it out, if only that country didn't have the worst bands in the world :p.

Wintermute 09-13-2004 03:47 AM

Music aside, it's an ace place. I don't think I'll ever forget the day spent jumping from a traditional log-fired sauna at 80C into a lake and back again, and then a BBQ, and when (sort of) night came, sitting out by the lakeside with candles watching the lake in twilight and listening to the wolves howl in the forests around us.

(Wolves have been extinct in the British Isles for a very long time indeed, so that was something I'd never heard before)

gaslight 09-13-2004 03:50 AM

I guess I'll just take headphones .

Rollo47 09-13-2004 03:52 AM

I envy you all so much. I've never been out of Australia.

Wintermute 09-13-2004 03:57 AM

^^
I'm always amazed talking to people who've never left their homecountry...
I've been to France 3 times
Germany
Poland for a month, teaching English
Portugal
Greece
Philipines
America
China
Hong Kong (Two years, living there)
Finland
Lanzarote
Holland

And probably some others that have slipped my mind.

gaslight 09-13-2004 04:00 AM

I've been to most of Asia when I was really little.

Other than that, I only actually remember going to Bali, Indonesia, and Fiji. Fiji is the most recent. My family had a lot more money when I was little. :upset:

Wintermute 09-13-2004 04:07 AM

Yeah same, we used to be rich.

If we were still rich I likely wouldn't be using a computer that needs to bring up a progress bar to delete an icon, but by the time the progress bar has been opened, the icon is long gone...

The last couple of expeditions were self funded.

Jim Hull 09-13-2004 04:37 AM

Wintermute you have been to Hong Kong! Whats it like? I've always wanted to go to China... or maybe Japan. Can't decide.

Wintermute 09-13-2004 04:57 AM

Yeah, I lived there for a couple of years. It's great, the weather's pretty extreme though, gets roasting hot in summer, and in the Typhoon season it's drenched and incredibly windy.

It's an odd juxtaposition of old and new... at the same time there are forests of bamboo, old temples only ever seen by the monks who live there, traditional clustered markets, and towering glass skyscrapers, and some of the busiest ports and airports in the world.

Funny story, this designed by the Bank of China to give bad Feng Shui to all the buildings around it.

There's a bit of trouble there now, as China have taken over again, and are trying to govern it in their own way. The citizens, however, grew up in a Hong Kong that was a democratic British Colony, and object to this... In response Beijing has rigged up a token democratic system, which looks democratic but really isn't. However, the people in Hong Kong are, on average, better educated than in the rest of China, and are not fooled by this. There's big protests and so on going on at the moment.

It's a great place, and the food is unbelievable. If you go, be sure to try Loy-lams (hard to get to, you need your own boat. This one's pretty exclusive!) or the Tuen Mun Dai Pai Dong. (Street restaurant, but WHAT a street restaurant!) Also try Kublai Khans (a Mongolian restaurant, but absolutely unique)

bottlerocket 09-13-2004 06:20 AM

I'm at school on a laptop in the library...MX kept crashing when I tried to go on at home, so I won't be posting a lot.

Anyway, is anyone on MX right now? I'm kinda pissed I can't hear the Coffee/Bass Guy comp.

bottlerocket 09-13-2004 06:27 AM

I've been to some states in the US, Canada, Mexico, Aruba, Grand Caymon islands, and other random places/islands I don't remember...

I like travelling, but there's no place like home. :clicks heels three times:

Wintermute 09-13-2004 06:54 AM

I'm 18

I'm only on now because I missed the bus into town :(
There's another one soon though, so I'm not on for long.

Oh, I've been to Austria too, but I don't remember it well, I was very small.

I think everyone should go to Poland, if only to visit Auschwitz. It's a horrific place, that everyone should visit once. You won't want to visit more than once, but you'll be glad you went.

Left Shoe 09-13-2004 07:31 AM

they have t shirts!
"my friend went to auschwitz and all i got was this **** t shirt"

ShelBel 09-13-2004 07:37 AM

Morning all!

Wow Wintermute- I'm envious. To be so young and yet have seen and done so much already... Awesome. I've been to Canada (Montreal, Toronto), the (former) Soviet Union (hey, it was 1990- I spent a month in Novosibirsk, Siberia), Spain (beautiful ounty, incredible food), and a TEENY bit of France (very southern portion- Vittoria/Gasteiz, I think it was- part of the Spain trip).

I would love to go to Poland. Europe in general, actually, but I don't see it happening until after my kids are out of high school (ten years or so... I'm patient, I can wait). I have to get my hubby out of the country at least once; he's never been!

bassist-bmxer 09-13-2004 07:49 AM

hello guys

Left Shoe 09-13-2004 07:50 AM

LightRaven 09-13-2004 09:13 AM

37 pages and its only monday.

*sigh* Work is starting to run me down a bit. I mean.. I work monday, tuesday, wednesday, a good portion of thursday, saturday and sunday. My only true day off is friday, and it just doesn't seem like enough.

Tuesdays and wednesdays are my worst days though... I work from around 11:30 to 8 (tuesday) or 11:30 to 9 (wednesday). Those are long *** days.

*tired* I suppose I should go do something...

LR

moxshyfter 09-13-2004 09:17 AM

Phhh, sucks to be you man! I sit here with my thumb in my *** browsing forums until work comes my way. But, being bored does takes its toll on you after a while ...

Rollo47 09-13-2004 09:33 AM

GAH!

It's nearly 11:30pm now..... I went to bed at about 7:30pm to try and get rid of my headache... just sleep for a couple of hours, then get up and do some homework, but no, I had to go and sleep until 11:30!!! Now my sleeping pattern is even more fucked than it already was. Just fucking great. No sleep for me tonight!

moxshyfter 09-13-2004 09:39 AM

Left Shoe 09-13-2004 09:42 AM

Yes, yes I am.

moxshyfter 09-13-2004 10:04 AM

Eh, its ok man. Just go take a big bong rip or something to cool your nerves a bit!

bassist-bmxer 09-13-2004 10:05 AM

yeah i have band problems at the moment this is what has happened:

our band is a emo band but suddenly everyone wants to be different, our guitarist wants to be metal, our singer wants to be screamo/hardcore, and the drummer wants to be like muse (whatever that genre is?)

so anyway i came up with a good idea why dont we make our own kind of genre combining emo, metal, hardcore, prog rock, prog metal, and loads more, but they dont really agree on that and its really pissing me off

Left Shoe 09-13-2004 10:06 AM

isnt that called screamo.
check out this band "silverstein" for some good screamo
http://www.silversteinmusic.com/

bassist-bmxer 09-13-2004 10:10 AM

not really

peeted 09-13-2004 10:12 AM

my band do that, my drumer likes screemo and metal, my lead guitarist/singer guitarist likes pop emo, punk and jazz, my rythm guitarist/song wrighter likes hardcore, extreem experimental rock, strange gay rock (mars volta) and a lil metal and i like metal and jazz and primusey stuff so were in a punk, metal, screemo hardcore experimental jazz band with a litle progresive metal and primus influence .........good for bass (exept the emo bits)

bassist-bmxer 09-13-2004 10:20 AM

hey leftshoe thats not screamo thats emo

moxshyfter 09-13-2004 10:26 AM

Screamo is like Remembering Never, Poison the Well (borderline), etc.

bassist-bmxer 09-13-2004 10:47 AM

yeah this is screamo www.purevolume.com/callanambulance
