I actually like Orbison's songwriting. A lot of his songs have very similar themes and he never really branched out from heartbreaks and bad relationships and stuff, but his voice makes his songwriting seem even sadder in a way. His songwriting and style of music go perfectly with his voice. I like how he invented kind of an opera-like rockability style if that makes any sense. There are a lot of songwriters I like more than him though.

If you count singing ability and songwriting, I think Bob Dylan would win it for me.

np- Roy Orbison- Crying (this is the most amazing singing ever)

I'm making a burned cd for my brother to try to get him more into classic rock and open up his mind to other types of music:cool:
I agree with everything you said 100%. :chug:

Today I was browsing through this used bookstore and I found a book I wanted. So I scrounged up all my change and bought it, then looked to my left and saw a giant pile of vinyl albums. There were some great ones in there for really cheap, the one I am intent on getting is The Beatles 1967 - 1970...it was only two bucks! There were also a lot of cool books, there was one on The Doors, one on Janis Joplin, various Rock n Roll ones and tons of other great books for extremely cheap (all under five bucks). Unfortunately, I spent all the change I had on the book (Ernest Hemingway's Short Stories).

Bought:

Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
Butterfield Blues Band - s/t
Taj Mahal - Natch'l Blues

JonG 12-17-2005 03:25 PM

Excellent.
Excellent.
Excellent.

Nice choices. I prefer Taj Mahal's s/t to Natch'l Blues though.

'stock, where do you buy CD's?

We have a new Borders Store around here, and they seem to have some really rare CD's. Plus, they have extensive Blues and Jazz sections.

robo2448 12-17-2005 03:28 PM

Good pickups. How's the Paul Butterfield Blues Band s/t?

I'm pissed. My copy of Live At Leeds has disappeared. I think I might have loaned it to a friend, but I'm not sure. It's just vanished. Lesson of the day: Don't trust friends with precious cds:angry:.

JonG 12-17-2005 03:37 PM

PBBB s/t is amazing. East-West is excellent aswell.

I could upload them.

Woodstock 12-17-2005 03:38 PM

I haven't listened to the s/t yet, but East-West has two awesome jams on it.

PinkFreud 12-17-2005 03:57 PM

its about time you bought double nickels on the dime. jeez.

I just read the reveiw for Double Nickels on the Dime on Sputnik a few days back. I seems quite appealing to me.

There is a thread on favorite quotes in the pit, so naturally, someone put:

It's better to burn out than to fade away - Curt Kobain

Ugh, that's pathetic

Another one of Neil's I like is:

We're all just pissin' in the wind..
Rock and Roll is here to stay

That's a cool one. He was such a fantastic lyricist that he's bound to have some great quotes.

DeusExMachina 12-17-2005 05:52 PM

<3 Neil.

I've been really digging Zappa lately. I used to not be a fan, but I'm getting much more into it.

I like Zappa, but I really only like to listen to him every once in a while. Maybe one album per 1 or 2 weeks or something like that.

I honestly don't have any good CD stores in my city. Every CD store I've been to has all the most popular classic rock artists, but it has like five different Greatest Hits, and no actual albums. I hate it. That's why I only buy vinyl.

I have Freak Out! It's pretty good, but I've only listened to it a few times. It's a little oout there for my tastes; I think I'd more enjoy his jazzier/fusion material.

I used to be on of those people who only bought Greatest hits. I figured that those had to be the best songs. I now realize my mistake. It's good for some artists though, just to get an overview of their materials. To give myself some credit, those albums are essentially what got me into Classic Rock.

Freak Out! is my favourite Zappa album. I don't mind his jazzier/fusion material, but there is tons of other music out there I'd rather listen to.

I'm not against buying Greatest Hits albums, mainly because they are usually pretty cheap (at least where I buy them). The Gold Series makes great Greatest Hits albums....it's a double album Greatest Hits, with 20 songs on each album...and it's always the cheapest album on the shelf. I have Bob Marley Gold and Cream Gold.

TheDMV 12-17-2005 06:36 PM

Who is everyone voting for in the new poll? Bowie, Bruce and Gillan :(

Jacaranda 12-17-2005 06:44 PM

Bowie easy, I don't like Chris Cornell or any one else on the poll other then Geddy Lee.

I just finished snooping for Christmas gift's all I found was a new neck strap and a new metronome. I better have more gift's.
But wait! If she went to the Music store I have a good chance of getting a new guitar/drum set/bass. Exciting.

Broken Arrow 12-17-2005 07:01 PM

Snooping for Christmas is weak in my opinion. The reason I love Christmas is for the suprise.

I'll probbably vote Bruce.

thickasabrick 12-17-2005 07:57 PM

There was no one who stood out as amazingly better than everyone else, so I just chose Bruce.

Lunch 12-17-2005 08:43 PM

I voted Gillan but probably should've went with Bruce. Oh well.

I think I'm seriously becoming a Dead Head. And an ELP head.

Broken Arrow 12-17-2005 08:44 PM

Oh yeah, Neil is performing on Saturday Night Live tonight. Just thought you guys outta know.

"Somewhere in the universe the is a museum of incredible lost art that didn't get out because of heroin"-Random Neil Quote that is on a magazine picutre I have on my wall.
I think I'm seriously becoming a Dead Head.
I fear the same may be happening to me. Slowly but surely...

Today I got The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics book and The Illustrated Trip, which is like a Grateful Dead encyclopedia. I can't read them until Christmas though :(

Seafroggys 12-17-2005 09:30 PM

i voted for Gillian, but was torn between him and Bruce

If a greatest hits album has bonuses tagged on (live performances, b-sides, etc), I would look into it.

Kaleidoscope Eyes 12-17-2005 10:14 PM

PinkFreud 12-17-2005 10:31 PM
