Surprisingly I didnt vote for gilmour, I went with King Diamond. Im surprised that Fogerty made it this far. Im not saying he doesnt deserve it, but CCR isnt too big around here.

/probably the only person that doesnt know why everyone thinks Dickinson deserves to be so high.
I also don't think Dickinson should be that high, but whatever. Like I said before, Daltrey's voice is amazingly powerful, Freddie is just amazing period, I think McCartney has a great range and could get pretty powerful, Gilmour isn't anything special, but his vocals are very airy and relaxing, and that's why I like them. IMO, Lennon wasn't a very good singer technically, but I really like his voice. Morrison also had power, but wasn't very flowing (although I still really like his voice). I think that covers a lot of the people who we've been discussing.

I ended up with an 85 on my rock final. It's alright with me, considering there were a few things about Zeppelin I forgot to look over. The final question was my favorite: "Relate the story of "Tommy" to Lennon, Morrison, Hendrix, and Townshend's own comments. What was Townshend trying to say?" It basically tied up all the loose ends we'd talked about over the semester. Rock music is basically a religion. Rockstars are religious idols. There are some uncanny resemblences to them and other religious figures (some real, some fictional like Tommy). It was very cool to see how everything came together.

Hey, can anyone recommend me any good bands that sound like Dire Straits or Creedence Clearwater? You know, with that southern vibe going on.

Southern Rock: The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Country Rock: Neil Young, The Band, Bob Dylan, CSNY, Roy Buchanan, Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Flying Burrito Brothers

That might be a good start?

I already listen to and like The Eagles, Lynard Skynard, and The Grateful Dead, so I'll definitely check out the others. ;)

I hope the college I go to has a rock history class.

PinkFreud 12-16-2005 11:06 AM

if i had it my way, the top 3 vocalists would be buckley, cornell, and patton. in my opinion, theyre unmatched. they all have incredible range. cornell is more poweful than morrison. what buckley and patton lack in power they make up for with ridiculous versatility.

thickasabrick 12-16-2005 03:09 PM

I'm not a huge fan of Daltry or his singing ability. he's not a bad singer...his voice just doesn't really strike me as anything overly special. He's definitely the weakest part of The Who.

Broken Arrow 12-16-2005 03:17 PM

Yeah, I can also recognize the talent in his voice too, I just don't like the sound of it. I never base whether i like a singer or not based on range or power for some reason.

Do you guys remember me mentioning the guy that sells vinyl albums for a buck each? Well my dad told him I like Bob Dylan. Here's what he gave to my dad at work today (a buck each!!!):

Greatest Hits Volume II
John Wesley Harding
Infidels
The Basement Tapes
Down in the Groove
Street Legal
Dylan
Empire Burlesque (two copies, apparently he has too many copies)
Saved
Desire (two copies, once again...he has a lot of Desire)
At Budokan
Highway 61 Revisited
New Morning
Pat Garret & Billy The Kid
Hard Rain
Shot of Love

So I'm pretty happy. As you can see, a lot of those aren't his best albums...but I already have most of his best albums either on vinyl, CD, mp3, or any combination of those. All in all, this was a good haul. He also threw in History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice).

:chug:

Nice pickups Thickasabrick. Dylan is supposedly really rare and really, really bad. It'd still be awesome to own though since I think it's supposed to be really rare.

Somebody (Livewired I think) said that Daltrey would beat the crap out of McCartney if they fought. Well Daltrey was actually invited to join The Who for his fighting, not singing ability. Townsend said that they needed a little tough guy who could beat people up and Daltrey was the perfect fit. Daltrey ended up having a pretty awesome voice too.

I think my favorite singer ever is Roy Orbison though. Just amazing. It's really a shame that he didn't even make the polls. Everything about his singing is amazing. His singing is so emotional and sad. And he has amazing range too. Listen to Crying. The note he hits at the end of that song... oh man it's just amazing. Sometime in the next week I'm going to do a write-up on Roy Orbison and send out some of his stuff.

jpj 12-16-2005 05:33 PM

I saw part of that Roy Orbison concert with Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, and like on PBS. He really does have an amazing voice.

His singing voice sounds like a bastardized mix between Maynard James Keenan and Weird Al Yankovic...whenever I listen to an Opeth song I'm waiting for him to back to the growls.

Nice haul, I have a friend who insist that Infidels and Saved are among Dylan's best albums, and I have always wanted to get The Basement Tapes.

Infidels is indeed awesome. Great album.

I don't have Saved, but it is part of his trio of Christian albums which don't get very positive reviews.

The Basement Tapes are really great.

Awesome moment in class today, I have a teacher who I am pretty cool with, and during study time, he plays some songs, so he let me look around on his itunes for something good, and,"Yeah," by Usher comes on, so I get up and turn it to Eleanor Rigby . everyone was like,"wtf u do dat 4?"

/yay for sticking it to the...people

Bus 12-16-2005 06:17 PM

I just had a super jam comprised of Dazed and Confused, Fairies Wear Boots, Spoonful, Hideaway, and Yer Blues. It was very cool.

Seafroggys 12-16-2005 08:25 PM

Yer Blues and Fairies Wear Boots are awesome songs.

JonG 12-16-2005 08:29 PM

Hideaway is an amazing song to jam to.

In closing, all those songs rule.

So, I just pwned some kid today. He said that he's heard every Queen song and that he owns the entire Queen discography.

So, I start singing "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" and he's like "WTF WUT IS DAT SONG"

I left.

If we are talking pure vocal talent, then I'd say Orbison as well. He's not my favourite "singer" though, because when talking about singers I'd also have to take songwriting and stuff like that into the picture, and their are better songwriters than Orbison out there.

I prefer Eleanor Rigby to Yeah....but I've got nothing against Usher. He's a very talented guy, and he's got class.

robo2448 12-16-2005 09:40 PM

I actually like Orbison's songwriting. A lot of his songs have very similar themes and he never really branched out from heartbreaks and bad relationships and stuff, but his voice makes his songwriting seem even sadder in a way. His songwriting and style of music go perfectly with his voice. I like how he invented kind of an opera-like rockability style if that makes any sense. There are a lot of songwriters I like more than him though.

If you count singing ability and songwriting, I think Bob Dylan would win it for me.

np- Roy Orbison- Crying (this is the most amazing singing ever)

I'm making a burned cd for my brother to try to get him more into classic rock and open up his mind to other types of music:cool:
