I actually think McCartney beats Daltrey technically. As PinkFreud said, he beats Daltrey pretty easily in range. But Daltrey has the most powerful voice ever, and it suited The Who perfectly. McCartney has great power too, but nobody can come close to Daltrey when it comes to that IMO. Of course Keith Moon beats them both.
Control problems? Armenia and the whole Tommy album (actually most of Sell Out as well) would beg to differ. His range isn't fantastic, but I can't see how McCartney that much better. And Daltrey's Power>>>>>>McCartney's.
he sounds like he's straining every time i listen to tommy. its not pleasant to my ears.

i still like him though.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 08:38 PM

This conversation inspired me to listen to "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" I think that has some of Mcartney's best singing no matter how much of a filler song it is.

Lunch 12-15-2005 08:39 PM

I've never heard any signs of noticeable strain, but to each his own.

I really can't believe that Gilmour is beating Daltrey. I think I have just lost any faith I had in this forum.

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:42 PM

gilmour does not really sing that well. plain and simple. i agree. daltrey should be above him.

I agree. I like most of the filler on The White Album. I used to hate Wild Honey Pie but even that's growing on me now. I like all the songs on it now.

Another thing in Daltrey's favor is that Pete Townsend had pretty good range and could handle a lot of the higher notes so Daltrey didn't need outstanding range.

Edit- I love Gilmour but prefer Daltrey to him by a lot.

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:44 PM

love reign o'er me and wont get fooled again are daltrey's shining moments.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 08:47 PM

Haha, I prefer Gilmour because I dont care about talent or range as you guys.

Can't you tell? I'm a Neil Young fan!

/low-blow to favourite artist

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 08:49 PM

zing!

yeah, technically he's pretty bad. haha.

Harsh. If I'm listening to a song by him (like After The Goldrush) and his voice breaks, my sister always laughs at me/him.

I think Daltrey is overrated, as great as The Who are. I prefer Lennon/McCartney.

robo2448 12-15-2005 08:57 PM

Quadrophenia is so great. Probably Daltrey's shining moment as a singer, probably the greatest drumming album that I have ever heard, some of Entwistle's greatest bass playing, and the plot line is much better than Tommy's. The only fault I can find is the synthesizers. On most of the album, the synthesizers work really well but sometimes get a little annoying. I still prefer Tommy but Q is pretty amazing too.
love reign o'er me and wont get fooled again are daltrey's shining moments.
And See Me, Feel Me live anywhere. Daltrey is a fantastic rock singer, plain and simple. He certainly shouldn't be the best vocalist on any list because of his limitations. But his overall ability in just one area is good enough for him be top 10, especially in R&M.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2005 09:02 PM

Hey, I like Gilmour's singing. He may not be the most technically talented singer, but his voice is really wonderful. I think so, at least.

That being said, I do think Daltrey is an amazing singer as well. I didn't actually notice he was in the poll until after I voted.

Krabsworth 12-15-2005 09:21 PM
McCartney doesn't hold a candle to Daltrey, but at least you agree they're better than Gilmour.
Um Daltrey is totally pwned off his sox by McCartney

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 09:21 PM

Hey, your not alone. I think Gilmour is a great singer too.

I love the harmonies in songs like Echoes and Breathe.

Lunch 12-15-2005 09:22 PM
Um Daltrey is totally pwned off his sox by McCartney
Yea, except in terms of singing.

Edit: Actually, and most other things too.

Krabsworth 12-15-2005 09:25 PM
Yea, except in terms of singing.
Ummmm...no.
Hmmm, that was a truly compelling argument. I'm going to rethink my opinions.
Yeah I bet Daltrey would own Mcartney at sports.
Daltrey would beat the crap out of McCartney too.

He knocked out Pete Townshend in one punch when they were rehearsing for their Quadrophenia tour.

Um, too bad Daltrey didn't make taht grreat of music.

I'm going to make a video game where singers can fight eachother just so I can see that happen.

Who do you think would be the ultimate Classic Rock fighter?

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 09:53 PM

i dont know but if henry rollins were allowed in, as a hidden character or something, it would be him.

him or bruce lee.

btw, daltrey was a better frontman than mccartney. mccartney was a better songwriter and lyricist. mostly because daltrey didnt write the music for the who. and his solo career sucked. he also knocked keith moon out.

Glitterati 12-15-2005 09:56 PM
i dont know but if henry rollins were allowed in, as a hidden character or something, it would be him.
Henry Rollins is a fucking beast. His neck is like a tree trunk.

np: Prince - Head

PinkFreud 12-15-2005 10:17 PM

yeah. everytime i watch vh1's i love the whatevers, his are always hilarious. because he's always so angry. and his neck is thicker than his head.

Bus 12-15-2005 11:25 PM

Daltrey range = Bargain: "The best I ever had"
Daltrey power = Love Reign O'er Me: "LOOOOOOOOOOOVE, reign o'er me!"

Those two songs are what I think of when I think of how great Daltrey is.

I hurt in so many ways. No more 6-12 shifts for me. Oh wait, yea there are, on Saturday and Monday. :upset:

At least I have my Rock final tomorrow. Peace nuccas.

Seafroggys 12-16-2005 12:17 AM

I love McCartney to death.....

but I'd still vote Daltry over him.....

Daltry should be second in that poll next to Bruce DIckenson (just because most this forum is metal fanboys, otherwise I think Daltry should be on top); the only person I'd vote for over Daltry is Lennon, because Lennon had the best voice (though not technical skills).

Jacaranda 12-16-2005 07:39 AM

Ideally, I'd have Freddie at number one and then Roger (Daltrey) at number two. I don't really need to explain Freddie but I think Roger is one of the top 3 greatest singer's of all time, and to compare him to Paul or John... that is just dumb Paul/John aren’t really anything special, to my knowing singing falsetto isn't very hard, which they did half the time if my voice teacher is correct.
When you listen to any Who song his voice is never weak or boring he is always very powerful and interesting. He has the most powerful voice in music, Bruce is good but Roger is better. Plus he can stutter cool like.
And Gilmour, ugh I can't stand Pink Floyd more then 1/2 the time so I obviously see nothing special in his voice. The poll is Vocalist's not most emotional singer, its ridiculous how Bob Dylan is still in it, his voice is garbage although emotion or tone is one dimension of singing there are other dimensions that a voter should encompass as we get further into the poll and one of those dimensions is skill, which Dylan fail's at.

Krabsworth 12-16-2005 07:40 AM

Pffffttt that Opeth wanker was doing good last time I checked.

Jacaranda 12-16-2005 08:15 AM

That 'wanker' can sing better then more then half of those people on the poll.

Kingofdudes 12-16-2005 09:54 AM

Surprisingly I didnt vote for gilmour, I went with King Diamond. Im surprised that Fogerty made it this far. Im not saying he doesnt deserve it, but CCR isnt too big around here.

/probably the only person that doesnt know why everyone thinks Dickinson deserves to be so high.
