Sweet.. Face of Melinda + BWP = goodness.
Amazing show last night! Both Pelican and Opeth owned the place. The set list was pretty awesome, with their show overall pushing 2.5 hours. Not bad at all. :)

Baying of the Hounds
When
Bleak
In My Time Of Need
The Grand Conjuration
Face of Melinda
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Encore: Demon of the Fall

Mike was pretty funny when he would talk in between songs. Weird guy, but very cool. Also, Per was the coolest; he looked like a wizard behind his keyboards. I was a little surprised to see him play some of the more floaty guitar riffs while Mike doubled the rhythm guitar part.
How is the crowd at a show like that?

I've never been to a real metal show before, and I don't want to get my head slammed in for either a.) not looking like a typical metal fan or b.) just unluckily being stationed near a rowdy spot. My instincts tell me that an Opeth show isn't really so rife with violent fan activity like others might be, but I'm not sure.

Shadows 10-22-2005 03:49 PM

I really can't imagine Opeth being as energetic or violent as a usual metal show.

Nobody's going to do anything to you for not looking like a typical metalhead. :) I go to tons of metal shows, and nobody's said a thing to me, let alone hit me.

The unluckily rowdy spot is always a problem though. :( I always end up by one - people moshing right behind me and painfully slamming me into the barrier. It's worth it though.

Because of this, at Sounds of The Underground, during the Grand Conguration people were screwing around right next to my bassist (who was right infront of Mikeal) and couldn't properly listen to the song. He regrets it to this day.

But just avoid those spots, and you'll be fine.

RouteOne 10-22-2005 03:56 PM

So...I almost done downloading the whole still life album...

On an unrelated note, The Amen Corner has a very unusual name. Does it have meaning?

Sixty Ton Angel 10-22-2005 07:10 PM

Random question.
What level would you say you need to be to have any sort of chance of playing Opeth songs half well ?

The stuff I usually play is pretty easy and I'm wondering if i try some Opeth and I fail miserably is it because it's advanced or if I just need to practise more.

Thanks :)

Shadows 10-22-2005 07:11 PM

Opeth really isn't difficult at all. Some of their solos may be a little challenging, but overall Mike prefers to play with style rather than technical skill. The only problem would be the length.

Deth 10-22-2005 07:18 PM

They have some different time signitures, but nothing too challenging.

His accoustic playing is phenomenal. I'm a fairly accomplished electric player, but I have real trouble playing his fingerpicked lines with as much precision and control as he does. His electric playing is nothing special, although he has a lot of jazz-style emotion in his phrases.

I noticed the very blues/jazz style in his electric playing, and I like it. I don't know about the acoustic though, I don't really distinguish between picking and finger style at first glance.

Yes, he's an incredible acoustic player.

Shattered_Future 10-22-2005 07:35 PM

Opeth uses really, REALLY weird chords at times.

That, and the fingerpicking is almost impossible.

Otherwise, the rest is pretty easy...

A great example of this is the intro in WHEN.

Deth 10-22-2005 07:43 PM

If we just stick with the electric stuff though, it's not all that bad.

Darkness 10-22-2005 07:47 PM
If we just stick with the electric stuff though, it's not all that bad.
Then your saying you should only stick to about half of the stuff they play. :p

Well, a little more then that..

Great...FoM and BWP were the best songs of the night, bar none. Demon of the Fall was also awesome, but by the time they played it I was pretty wiped.

I'm just saying if we're just talking electric.

Just like you to twist my words around...

Darkness 10-22-2005 07:57 PM

I just meen, if you only play Opeths electric stuff, your only playing just above half of their material.

Wow, you really don't like me do you? :upset:

Toaster 10-22-2005 08:08 PM

It doesn't hurt to have huge fingers when playing Opeth, either. (Check out Patterns in the Ivy chords.)

I kid, I kid, I love you. We have a little friendly tension and it's fun to exploit ir.

When I first learned how to play Karma, I realized that the song itself opens with jazz chords, but electrified. The chords throughout the entire song were new to me, and I've been playing for over 12 years. Some of the chord structures and scales on Karma I'm familiar with, especially the first acoustic break in the song...yet it's pretty difficult to play considering it's a finger-picking techinique, with 2 seperate tracks. If you can get that down finger-picking, major props (get a Martin). The solo after the interlude is easy, but eerie, really strange scale there. After the solo, crazy chords with lead come in i.e. ''the cold season..." the entire song as a whole is extremely intricate being it's basically broke down into several tracks. You can see a lot of this structure on the song Credence. The end riff is insane for the atmosphere especially when the double bass kicks in. It's easy to play after practice, but there are also 3 guitar tracks, 2 of which are on the left (mono) and the 3rd on the right in stereo. I can't believe Mikael played all guitars on this album, all guitars meaning bass also. My Arms, Your Hearse is magical.

Darkness 10-22-2005 09:40 PM

Peter didn't play guitar on that cd?

i am the robots 10-22-2005 09:55 PM

Apparently so, I knew that he did the bass because they had just kicked out Johan and Martin hadn't joined yet, but I didn't know Peter didn't either.

Yeah, thats what I thought to.

i am the robots 10-22-2005 09:59 PM

Speaking of Johan, it sucks ass that he was an alchoholic, because he was an amazing bassist, same thing sucks with Martin Lopez and his cochaine problems now.

Is that why he's not touring? I read some things about "blood problems", but drugs seem far more likely.

Darkness 10-22-2005 10:03 PM

I heard it was a blood disease that he's had all his life..?

Shadows 10-22-2005 10:05 PM

Martin has a cocaine problem?

i am the robots 10-22-2005 10:10 PM

Yeah, when I went to see Meshuggah, there was a dude who was a rep with Porcupine Tree in the states there, and he was talking to my one friend, and that came up in their conversation.

Kaiwaz 10-22-2005 10:11 PM

No he doesn't. Stop spreading rumors, it's ignorant.

Darkness 10-22-2005 10:11 PM

Hm.. kinda hard to believe.. but very well could be true.. Notice how red his eyes are on the latest pictures under bios at the website..

Yeah, I'm pretty sure those entries can be made by anyone..so that's not proving anything, really.

Shadows 10-22-2005 10:14 PM

It says RUMORS are being spread that it MAY be cocaine.

It's possible, but I think it's very unlikely.
