Turn the tone knob to 11.
i'm so hugely underwhelmed with the periphery cd, it's difficult to express
Mine hasn't arrived yet, but is the mix on the album as bad as it sounds on the myspace? I honestly can't understand how he could make a final product where everything sounds worse than the home recordings he did 2, 3 years ago.

Modern Iconoclast 04-25-2010 11:45 AM

Sup lod. Went to a huge *** frat party last night, 800 people **** was insane.

Yeah, mainly because I like supporting bands that I like. Odd that.

Bruce E Kinesis 04-25-2010 12:47 PM

If you'd downloaded it first you'd have known it was mixed badly

fingers mccoy 04-25-2010 01:01 PM

just don't listen to **** music that absolutely requires an impeccable mix to have any impact whatsoever and you won't have this problem again

Bruce E Kinesis 04-25-2010 01:04 PM

I like music

I just don't really like that shouty nonsense you guys listen to

Spaceman Spiff 04-25-2010 01:24 PM

I used to listen to a lot of death metal and screamy vocal stuff, but I just got really tired of it.

I like singing.

Sad But True 04-25-2010 01:34 PM

Wow subjectivity. Don't really care but thanks for your input anyway.

AG 04-25-2010 01:45 PM

I just dented the crap out of a water bottle by accident. Grr.

Oh well, it was only £3.99.

Reduced my SHTF bag by 1/4. Got rid of some dumb **** I didn't need. Not that I need it anyway.

a place where people post essays in isolation for others to ignore

fingers mccoy 04-25-2010 01:49 PM

no see this is why metal and all that **** objectively fails

people spend years trying to find a way to present the musical material in a way that's actually listenable and just when they think they've achieved practicable coherence everyone is 'underwhelmed' even tho they've heard all the songs before and know entirely what to expect

everyone bitches about how the guitar forum sucks for discussion and is dominated by the same old gear threads -it's cause no one is ever satisfied with this poopty void in aesthetics in the shape of 'brutality' and 'complexity' because the music has nothing to offer apart from amusing onomatopoeia

it's also why the ratio of good to woefully inept guitar playing on here is shameful

HAVE AT YOU

Kuffuffled 04-25-2010 01:57 PM

I bought the new periphery album, it sounds pretty good. Honestly I thought some old mixes were better but it's a pretty solid cd

fingers mccoy 04-25-2010 01:59 PM

i hate you all you cunts

Sad But True 04-25-2010 02:12 PM

Thanks for that. Still not convinced mind.

JoshIsNumber3 04-25-2010 03:48 PM

Alright, so the periphery cd.

Pros: Great songwriting, production on the guitars and the drums. Spencer's growls are pretty amazing in delivery and sound. Glitch stuff was awesome.

Cons: Djent is becoming the new deathcore and everyone and their sister are going to be playing it. While Spencer is technically hitting the notes, they have definitely been tuned in some places and he lacks any real substance in his higher register, it just sounds forced. Bass is pretty inexistant as it's own instrument, there are places where there is a cohesive bass line, but for the most part it is just doubling the guitar parts chugga chugga stop chugga stop chugga. With as much time and effort put into this album, you would think they could do better for the bass than a POD. Also, the album is far too long and it grows tired on the ears.

I'd say it's a 77/100

Sad But True 04-25-2010 04:06 PM

Thanks dude, but did you honestly like the guitar tone? I thought it was pretty stale and thin sounding tbh.

JoshIsNumber3 04-25-2010 04:13 PM

The djent thing is pretty crappy. I've never been a fan of that sound, the only reason that Meshuggah is able to get a huge sound that way is because they have a real bass player who can fill up that sonic space. So, the distorted tone is really dry and thin, but everything else combined makes for a pleasant listening experience, it's just a shame that it takes 3 great players to make a listenable product.

Sad But True 04-25-2010 04:22 PM

Thing is, from the videos I've seen of Periphery's live set up, their tones are amazing, but the recorded tone just isn't. I can see myself going back and listening to the free stuff he did more than the album. I think he should make some more of the slower, ambient stuff like Jetpack Was Yes, Press Enter and Epic Fail.

Bruce E Kinesis 04-25-2010 04:57 PM

the **** is djent?

Ha!
That's such a British thing to say. Something I can imagine James May saying.

Bruce E Kinesis 04-25-2010 05:15 PM

I'm trailing behind man, can't beat ~25k in robot unicorn

Aes820 04-25-2010 05:21 PM

I got a 75K the other day. But generally if I score over 25k it's pretty much a fluke.

Sad But True 04-25-2010 05:44 PM

Just got 36k 4th try.

Either way, I like it.

AKG 721 MKII thoughts?

Convectuoso 04-25-2010 06:12 PM
Thanks man. We play modern-ish rock, but not like that helps. He knows he needs new skins, not sure if he went through with it or not. This was meant to be a myspace recording thing but knowing me it's gonna be demo worthy or more hopefully (ocd). Apparently we have 5 mics plus kick and OH, so we should be able to nail a fairly good sounds recording

I don't know the exact specs on the mics we got either so once I find out I'll probably do some google hunting to see what I can do with them. I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing but it'll be trial and error for sure
Ideally you'll want 2 small diaphragm capacitors (condensers) for OH's, a 57 or other sort of moving coil for snare, a half decent cardioid for kick and in an ideal world some 421's for toms. But they're pretty expensive so whatever equivalent you have avaiable.

Don't bother micing the bottom of the snare if you're limited to 5 or so mics. Don't bother with a room if you don't have enough mics. Don't bother with two mics on the kick either.

If you could get the models and numbers that'd be great to help you decide what to use them for.
