Oh I'm definitely getting a blues pedal. I'm also thinking of getting Seymour Duncan pickups, becase I heard they're best for jazz and blues. yay/nay?

Kage 05-08-2005 04:13 PM
The Boss DS-1 is the one that I am thinking about getting. It's got good, solid distortion.

Ray, you might also like a blues pedal, since I'm guessing you won't be playing metal :)
Boss DS-1 is great, and really cheap.

ATM 05-08-2005 04:14 PM

I don't know anything about pickups, unfortunately.

Ultimately, I want to achieve the tone Iommi had on Black Sabbath's Paranoid album.

Illmatic 05-08-2005 04:16 PM

I also need to get a decent slide and a decent harmonica holder.

Good luck on that, his tone is very very kick-ass-er-if-ic

Anyone download the CoB video that was just posted?

It's really good.
I always thought ROFL was Roar Out Fucking Loud.

Anyhoo, Cain is an excellent guitarist. Probably not the best in R&M but very good and his song writing is quite impressive. I just realized I do have an amp modeler. My old multi FX pedal has one built in. I'll try using that for next challenge. I wish people hated my song less.
Yeah, I'm definitely not the best. Thisfilter has a huge advantage on me as a rhythm player: he rips out a zillion polyrhythmic things on his songs and I don't even know the first thing about making polyrhythmics in the first place. He's also a great orchestrator and lead player. I like composing songs more than soloing anyway, although the latter sure is fun. :)

Dancin' Man, I hope you don't hate me for the criticism, hopefully my point was taken with no animosity.
What's up with all of the shit threads tonight? No wonder people dislike coming into rock and metal.
I know eh? It's been bad tonight. Worse ive seen it in awhile. :upset:

MalcolmYoungRock 05-08-2005 04:27 PM

The Boss DS-1 is a very solid pedal, I've had it for years.
Oh I'm definitely getting a blues pedal. I'm also thinking of getting Seymour Duncan pickups, becase I heard they're best for jazz and blues. yay/nay?
I'm not educated on Seymour Duncans, but I always heard Lace Sensor's were great blues pickups, and a lot of the Fender pickups (Tex-mex, Noiseless, etc.)

As for blues pedals, I was always sold on the BOSS BD-2, until I found the Ibanez TS-808. Now I'm definently going with the Ibanez. Check out both of them though :thumb:

Illmatic 05-08-2005 04:29 PM

If Tex-Mex is like SRV's sound, I'll pass. I didn't like SRV's tone all that much.

magicbus 05-08-2005 04:35 PM

Yea they are like SRV's. Noiseless are like Claptons, and Jeff Beck has Ceramic Noiseless. Buddy Guy is the one who uses the Lace Sensors, you might want to listen to his guitar on the website.

Paranoidd 05-08-2005 04:44 PM

SRV's sound was also partly due to the fact his strat was practically hollow.

I haven't seen it and would never take criticism of this nature in a bad way. I know it's all to help and if someone does give mean spirited criticism, then they had better have something to back it up with. When you win, make the next comp Grind covers of pop songs. Blink 182 - What's My Age Again.

Illmatic 05-08-2005 04:47 PM

OMG, Rob stopped in to visit.

And I didn't know that, actually. I'm still probably not going to get Tex-Mex pickups, though.

Lace Sensors or Noiseless would probably be good. Clapton's tone isn't raunchy enough to me, but Beck and Guy (as stated) wrangle some amazing blues tones out of their pickups.

sup ;)

SRV's strat was pretty much hollow because it used to belong to the guitar player from Vanilla Fudge, who inexplicably put 3 humbuckers in it. Thus alot of the body was routed out which was what gave it the clear, bell-like tone.

TheDMV 05-08-2005 04:49 PM

Who'd everybody vote for in the guitarist poll?

/Hendrix

haha, I'm not going to win, nostaligias or thisfilter is. But on the chance that I do, I shall simply make it a cover contest, and judge on creativity. You will be free to make your Grindcore cover...(not every knows what it is, like me :(), but other types of covers would be cool too.

But I won't win, like I said.
Who'd everybody vote for in the guitarist poll?

Hendrix. He deserves it. Gilmour does not.

Dancin' Man 05-08-2005 04:52 PM

Cain -

I just read your vote. Your's seems to have the best understanding of my song. The idiot after you seems to think that I screwed up 4/4 and it came out sounding like 5/4. I didn't even realize my drums were so low until about 2 days after I submitted my entry and by then it was too late. I resent people who like Joz's song better than mine though. That 3rd solo of his makes me want to go deaf. I think your song is going to win my top vote. There are parts of others I like better, but overall yours is my favorite. I wish more people did vocals though.

Illmatic 05-08-2005 04:52 PM

You've been turning up a lot less frequently, which is too bad. And while I don't like his tone, that is pretty interesting.

At this point I'm leaning towards "raunchier"/"dirter" blues as opposed to Clapton's very clean tone.

Dancin' Man 05-08-2005 04:55 PM

I dig that really crunchy blues sound. Clapton's sounds too accurate to me to feel like really emotive blues.

Good to see you Rob, haven't known of your whereabouts for quite some time.

SRV's tone is always making me flip-flop. I hate it on some days and love it on others. I think the majority of the time it's too wet-sounding for me...some more fuzz in his sound would have made it awesome. Then he could just control the raunchiness of the tone using the volume knob like Beck does.

Illmatic 05-08-2005 04:56 PM

123.

I like Clapton a lot, but I don't listen to him if I want to listen to the blues. If that makes sense.

i am the robots 05-08-2005 04:57 PM

Yes, Beck is good, thus he got my vote in the pole :thumb:

Yeah, I don't understand how the kid after me gave Joz's an 8/10. No offense to him, because I like him as a poster a great deal, but I don't think the song is up to par.

Very much so. I don't like him that much because a number of his songs sound exactly the same to me. That doesn't bother me so much with standard 12 bar blues because they're practically supposed to sound the same.

I hate that song with a passion.

Cain, I'm listening to your song for the competition, and I'm really liking it, it kinda reminds me of Opeth.

Thanks. I thought a little of it may have sounded like it, especially the outro and the ambient leads.

Yes, and the first accoustic part sounded like Opeth, but it had a little bit of a different feel to it, I really dig your style :thumb:

Do it, come on, loads of people are only listening to the songs that they want and not all of them, and so aren't voting. Everyone should be given a chance.

i am the robots 05-08-2005 05:18 PM

I know what you're saying, but I may not have the time.

So far I've listened to your song, Ramsey's (which was OK, but not really my style), then Magic Troll's (which is also OK, but a bit generic).

i am the robots 05-08-2005 05:27 PM

Now I've heard Lateski, Joz, and Gome, I like the first and third, but Joz' song is kinda cheesey and crappy IMO.
