for me there exist two types of doom metal

#1) the traditional ones who are in tradition of black sabbaths self titled album -> f.e.: Candlemass, who are more rock than metal

#2) doom metal bands who play doom metal but have nothing in common with the traditional doom metal! f.e.: Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Sunn O))) (=Drone doom metal), Novembre, etc.
in this category i count bands from the funeral doom metal corner too! f.e.: Pantheist, Shades of Despair.

thats my definition of doom... and i prefer the second one - for me thats doom
Saint Vitus IS good doom.

But good doom means a bit stoner.

Even Kyuss, Josh Homme's old band is pretty doom-y.
Kyuss ain't doom

I think Electric Wizard are, but I dont really know, I class them as stoner

They rule

metal-militia 04-09-2006 06:48 AM

my favourites are:
Trouble
Saint Vitus

Hey Husker, guess who.

Anyways, I love Candlemass. Other than that it's the only doom I have heard.
Is Katatonia Doom Metal or Post Metal? Or neither?
Katatonia have been both a doom metal band and a (depressive) rock band.
Amorphis has nothing in common with doom metal
Nah, they certainly have some doom elements.

As for me, some doom(ish) bands I recommend include:

Anathema
Black Sabbath
Candlemass
Carnivore
Catacombs
Cathedral
Cirith Ungol
Confessor
Count Raven
Cultus Sanguine
Doomshine
Ekklesiast
Electric Wizard (hottest guitarist in metal, click here)
Estatic Fear (highly recommended)
Forest of Shadows
Forest Stream
Isole
Katatonia
My Dying Bride
Nortt
November's Doom
Pantheist
Paramaecium
Place of Skulls
Reverend Bizarre
Saint Vitus
Saturnus
Solstice
Spirit Caravan
Swallow the Sun
Thalarion
The Gates of Slumber
The Liquescent Horror
The Prophecy
Torture Wheel
Uaral
Uncertainty Principle
Virgin Black
Whispering Gallery

I have albums from all of these bands on my computer, so if you'd like one, just hit me up on Soulseek (my SN is "Neurotoxin").

Sleepy 04-09-2006 12:52 PM

I don't have Soulseek, but I'm definitely interested in a lot of those bands. What about AIM?

Neurotoxin 04-09-2006 01:02 PM

I loathe AIM. What's your email?

joe_fresh 04-09-2006 01:07 PM

I have their first album, Condemed which is amazing. I could listen to their drummer all day. But what is their newest album like?

at first they were doom death metal, now they are a depressive rock band or maybe even just doom metal

old Katatonia > new Katatonia

I have one demo track, A Close Study.
You can find it on their soundclick page.

Their ex-drummer used to frequent these forums, but I haven't seen him around for a while.

Yeah, Jondur's their ex drummer. I've already heard that track, that's why I was looking for more. If I ever find more, I'll let you know.

I like the stoner doom stuff:
Clutch
High On Fire
Seemless
Lamented Souls
Sleep
etc.

Txus 04-09-2006 04:49 PM

I'm getting a lot into Candlemass at the moment I think Ancient Dreams is an outstanding album I don't like the s/t that much as I like Ancient Dream but I haven't heard Epicus Doomicus Metallicus :(

I'm not really a big Doom Metal fan but I also like Saint Vitus they are so freaking great, " Born Too Late" is really good.

Ummm 04-09-2006 08:20 PM

I got Virgin Black - Elegant...And Dying from Neurotoxin, and it's absolutely breathtaking. I'm looking forward to listening to more of this stuff.

Nepenthe 04-09-2006 10:46 PM

I don't really like Stoner stuff. But I do love just plain doom metal bands like November's Doom.

Anyone into Sins Of Thy Beloved? They're a doom/gothic metal band. They have some truly beautiful pieces, as well as some damn heavy and sad ones.

Send, and I can tell you what I think :) I'm eager as hell to try out Doom now.

Werny 04-10-2006 07:24 AM

I love the first album by November's Doom. Such a no-bullshat approach to doom metal, it floors me.

I think Electric Wizard are really just Stoner Rock played really, reeeeeeally slow.

Magicaltroll 04-10-2006 12:20 PM

I'm not sure if these are Doom, but...

Khanate
Sunn O)))
Dot [.]
Thee Plague Of Gentlemen
Corrupted

Corrupted is easily the most scary usic I've ever heard, beats fantomas - Delirium Corda,

how's Dot [.] ?

Kronos 04-10-2006 02:57 PM

Four pages of Doom discussion, and no mention of Paradise Lost.....

I think they deserve a plug

PS to the guy who said old Katatonia is better than new - I agree 100%

The Great Cold Distance is pretty poor IMO

Nice that you agree with me.

... but Paradise Lost is Gothic Metal not Doom... a lot of ppl here mix doom together with gothic... the two genres are different!!
