****ation isn't the least bit psychedelic.

I repeat, there is absolutely nothing psychedelic about ****ation.
I believe it is.
The slow, and calm music with the nice acoustic guitar sound...i think its psychadelic. If it isnt, (which is possible, seeing as i am not a complete genre know-it-all), then please help me out and explain.
I had some people explain it as a classical rock though.

I think of ****ation just as light rock.
I have heard about 5 songs by Opeth and every one blew me away. I am trying to get the Orchid CD but the local Sam Goody doesn't have it in there store or the warehouse so I am forced to order over the net, but I am paranoid about internet purchases.
try blackwater park first, or right after orchid. i think its their best album- just kicks *** in all aspects :thumb:
I'm thinking of picking up ****ation toward the end of the month for my first Opeth album. I figured it would be a good place to start since I'm not really that into the harsh vocals. Would this be a good choice?
****ation is quite good, but honestly it's not my favorite. My personal favorite would have to be Still Life. The production on that album is impeccable, and there is a very good balance of harsh vocals with clean vocals. I believe the latter may actually outstrip the former in terms of frequency. The production also make the growls feel like another, apocalyptic instrument blasting underneath everything, rather than a prominently-placed, headache-inducing growl or screech. I would reccommend that one, and that you, no matter what, listen to it all the way through once and decide if you like it.

feelsoinvincible 10-21-2004 01:18 PM

why do people who like tool frequently like opeth or vice versa...? i mean i love them and tool, Push the Envelope has the Opeth "o" for his avatar, Leperaffinity has something toolish in his avatar, title or some post... it's not as if they're the same genre

Agoraphobic Nosebleed 10-21-2004 01:20 PM

Black Sabbath didn't start Black Metal. Black Sabbath started Heavy Metal. I don't know who created Black Metal.

No, of course not, but both bands are insanely brilliant in their creation of music: Opeth based on the sheer talent, complexity, and proficiency of their compositions, and Tool based on their totally enigmatic image, insanely inventive and amazing lyric-writing, and Danny Carey's occultist drumming. They both combine very light and very dark elements as well. Tool tends to make the creepiest music this side of the Billboard Charts, and Opeth just plain put you through a storm on the high seas. They are similar in that respect.

You forgot about me :upset: , I'm a big fan of both. I dont know if the two bands can relate in any way, but I guess I see it as the depth of both of the artists music is on the same level. Besides that, they're quite opposites, besides the progressive atmosphere.

Err...my avatar was the Blackwater Park album, and my title was a lyric from an Emperor song. Even thought I myself am not a big Tool fan, I'd say because each ban'd uniqueness appeals to open-minded people.

I always recommend Blackwater Park, or Still Life for a starter Opeth album. You might not like Mikaels growls, but if you allow them to grow on you (they will, trust me), you'll be able to tolerate all of Opeths material (except maybe some of their earlier stuff. Besides, you get some great soft songs on both of those albums as well, like Benighted, Face of Melinda, Harvest, Patterns in the Ivy... all of which are better songs than any song on ****ation in my opinion. Its your decision, but a majority of Opeth fans (including me) got into them through Blackwater Park, so its a worthy suggestion.

kornedbeef 10-21-2004 03:21 PM

I didn't, I got into them through Morningrise, it may be ****ing hardcore vocals, but it's by far their best album.

Oh and by hardcore I mean the true meaning of the god **** word, REALLY ****ING HARD, not some gay *** "core" style of music.

Blanka Flip 10-22-2004 01:15 PM

Ahh...Just thought I'd say I'm listening to Forest of Ocotber right now, and am in love with Opeth!

From that article, and after doing some more research on what psychadellic rock is, i would have to agree with u there.

I was wondering, if there are any similar bands like Opeth?

relliK 10-23-2004 04:49 PM

Does anyone know where I can find live Opeth mp3?Im looking for audio because downloading a 10 min video on a 56k can be a very unpleasant experience as you can imagine.

Prince of Darkness 10-23-2004 05:13 PM

I don't know... I used to listen to that song all the time but now I just kinda skip it.

S D Ness 10-30-2004 10:05 PM

I haven't seen many people mention the song, "Benighted" -- I love it. Just a relaxing song.

I've been into their stuff in general for about eight months. They are one of my favorite bands.

Today I was wondering what the word "Opeth" meant. I found a website that quoted Mikael Akerfeldt saying it he took "opeth" from a novel and that it means "city of the moon." Can anyone validate this? What language?

LeperAffinity 10-30-2004 10:35 PM

Don't recall exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's on their site. I do remember that in the book it was just "Opet" and the h was added when the band was formed.

Kafkastolemyslippers 10-31-2004 02:21 PM

Anyone know where I can find some sheet music for Silhouette? That would be the coolest song to play.

It was some sci-fi book from the 50s. I'll try to find the place where I read about it.

Kafkastolemyslippers 10-31-2004 02:25 PM
18 actually sounds about right, i dont agree with meshuggah at number 1, but opeth towards the bottom is about right. You should be greatful they are even on the list.

I bet arcturus wasn't even on that list, so seriously, the list has no validity anyway
They should be way higher than 18, I think, though I didn't see the list. But, yes, Arcturus should be there for sure.

Congratulations! Opeth is one of the greatest bands today. I recently bought their live concert DVD Lamentations and I just love it! They start off playing the entire ****ation CD and then move on to the heavier death metal of Deliverance and Blackwater Park. Check it out!

Lots_of_Licks 11-01-2004 12:45 AM

Hahahaha check out this stupid censor thingy. They censored D-A-M-N-A-T-I-O-N gggggaaaaaaa!!!!

Yeah I've downloaded a bit of their stuff now and I like most of it. I will eventually buy a lot more of their stuff, if only I had the money...

Lots_of_Licks 11-01-2004 12:57 AM

Master's Apprentices live just destroys!

S D Ness 11-02-2004 08:55 PM

Is the DVD really worth it?

Listening to "The Drapery Falls" --- so gooood.

Cardboard Headgear 11-02-2004 09:59 PM

Yeah, the DVD is excellent, not to mention you can usually pick it up for $12.

Norton_Ghost_7.0 11-03-2004 04:34 AM

I have an Opeth altar man. I take Morningrise with both hands and lift it to the sky like it was a gift from the gods.

Ivan_Larsen 11-03-2004 05:35 AM

Oh!! I love Deliverance in Lamentations! It's so freagin heavy!!!!

On their albums, i do not enjoy the song deliverance that much, but i've seen them play it live like 3 times now, and its probably one of the most amazing live songs you can see. I'm not sure how it works, but it does.

LordDargon 11-03-2004 09:11 AM

More like Slowpeth. This band puts me to sleep.

bucket 11-03-2004 06:13 PM

My friend calls them O-pathetic

:upset:

Kaiwaz 11-03-2004 07:43 PM

Well your friends are obviously idiots. Unless they can do better, Their worthless internet lives are pathetic...not Opeth.

lmao Slowpeth? Listen to "By The Pain I See In Others" If thats too slow for you...you might be a serial killer. I suggest you format your Hard Drive, cancel your internet and seek guidance.

I pray for you.

Kaiwaz 11-03-2004 08:04 PM

I am finally back!

I took a break from the net to pursue recording the final songs for our first LP which is still untitled. I can finally play The Moor all the way through rythm, some parts are edgy but for the most part I can't get enough of playing THAT SONG! My other guitarist learned his parts really quick, in fact, it was like light haha! The song we have been working on the longest is "Stain Glass Window". All instrumental. It's not that long, maybe 12 - 13 minutes. We need to hire a violinist to polish off the final parts. Some riffs you can tell Opeth flows through my blood, not too obvious though...to rip off them would be sacrilege. For the most part the song is beautiful and doesn't sound like anything I have heard, which is a good thing :thumb:

GLAD TO BE BACK!
