Lykathea Aflame - To Become Shelter and Salvation (technical death/grind)
starts off with some mellow guitar, and some cymbals. at 0:06 hell breaks lose heavy drumming, and quite melodic guitars. great so far, reminds me of amon amarth, in a way. at 0:50 bass line is more present at 0:56 vocals enter, remind me of Deicide, of which I'm not too fond, difficult to hear what he is screaming. 1:08 short pause, before, a heavy part, without vocals, after a while vocals come in again. at 1:43 there is a part being spoken, reminds met to a few songs of the meshuggah record DEI. at 1:58 harsh vocals enter once more. 2:15 very melodic guitars :) still harsh vocals over it though. 2:35, melodic part ends 2:51 a melodic singing part, guitars remind me of softer machinehead numbers. 3:24 song gets heavier again. at 4:01 it sounds lighter, did bass guitar drop out? at 4:18 a last exploson of power begins, and ends with a chrash on a cymbal. - lot of things in the song remind me of other bands. -don't really like the vocals. -nice drumming -nice song structure, it would get boring if it would just be loud all the way, nice break-ups, mellow parts give the song more variety. -can't understand a thing of what the singer is saying. overall 6/10 would I listen to more of this band? I guess so, certainly when I'm in the mood for something really heavy =========== songs: amon amarth: Versus the world (melodic death) my dying bride - for you (doom metal) petrucci and rudess ( dream theater) - black ice ( virtuoso instrumental) meshuggah - we'll never see the day ( technical death metal) |

Does anybody put up any song suggestions that arent' some variety of metal?

this is only about metal.. guess that is explained in the 1st page of the thread

I was trying to avoid this music, first, because it's long, and second, because I am a HUGE Dream Theater/side Projects of them Fan. But, anyways, I had never heard this music before, though I have the album for a few months, and this is true, and funny, too. And I couldn't download all the other three musics as quickly as I could hear this... so, on to the review: (i'll try not to be partial)
Song: John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess - Black Ice (from the album: An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess ) The music starts with a tense, melodic pattern. The Piano Does exactly the same melody as the electric distorted (soft distortion) guitar. Half-minute after the piano starts creating even a little more tension with short chords... then, soloing a bit, as the guitar does too. Then, as the piano continues on the short chords, Petrucci starts to do a more releasive solo, as of releasing a bit the tension. Then they start again with the beginning sequence, and create the suspense again; But now, Petrucci shows his ambivalence as a solo guitarist such as a perfect rhythm guitarist. At around 2:00 minutes the music assumes a different tone, yet with the same pressure as the beginning one, and they follow that same pattern alternating with rhythm and solo for both parts (piano and guitar) for a while, until around 3:20. Then, Rudess shows the melancholic side of his playing style, with one calm, soothing solo in the piano. He starts releasing malancholy as guitar enters again very softly. Around 5:40/6:00 they're playing both a jazz-style sequence, as Petrucci starts releasing his old-rock fashioned solos. He drops them with a Queen-like style of playing, as the piano follows with a nice rhythm. Around 8:10 they go crazy and start the chaos of the Flight of the bumblebee, and an extremely sharp sholo by Rudess. They they start again, and this time it's time for Rudess' solo. The musical intensity at this point, is softened by the releasing piano solo, and chords that remember a bit of Derek Sherinian's playing, as the guitar goes on always with the same lick, and once again, they do that nice rhythm alternating chords between the piano and the guitar. To finish, a nice sequence of piano chords, side-by-side with an EXCELLENT tiny solo on the guitar. Phew, sorry if that was too long, but the music is long, too. And, besides that, i'm a big fan of them, so, sorry about something. And although it' not really metal, it's a very joyful music to hear. And as I am not one of those that just have eyes for metal, I think it's a very pleasant experience to sort music styles a bit; and if you do that, this is a great song for that, so my rating would be 8,5/10. ( I have to cut out a bit, I'm a fan :) ) Would I hear more from them: Of course, I always do, specially because they apply many styles in their music. ;) My Suggestions: Dream Theater - Home or Fatal Tragedy (Prog Metal) Angra - Carry on or Never Understand (Melodic/Epic/Classical Metal | Soft Metal / Brazillian Folk Music Fusion) Children Of Bodom - Bed Of Razors (Melodic Dark Metal, I think) The Black Mages - Clash On The Big Bridge (Jap-Metal / Videogame Soundtrack - Hard Rock) |
This is forced listening for Rock and Metal, so try to stick to those genres.
Maybe I misread the above line from the first page? Am I having hallucinations wherein the word 'rock' inserts itself into sentences? |
naw, that was not exactly what I meant.. of course you can suggest a gla-rock, soft rock music... for example, black Ice is not metal... and I doubt if it gets to rock-style.
let's just be friends, instead :P :chug: |

let's just be friends, instead :P :chug:
Hehe, I'm cool :chug: . I am one sarcastic mother though. I probably have more than a few enemies because of it. Anyway, I was just grumbling about how nobody ever suggests anything but metal. It's possible that all these people listen to nothing but metal, but I wish they'd get some variety before posting in it. |
and you're totally right... but, we're certainly here to change the fact, don't you think?

it's the typical advertisement..... "open your mind!" heheh ;)
it's the typical advertisement..... "open your mind!" heheh ;)
Every time some one mentions an 'open mind' I respond with... My mind is more open than your mom's legs!!! OH ****!!! :) I also consider myself a master at the spontaneous, not-really-that-funny 'your-mom' burn. Personally, next time someone suggests something that doesn't have metal in the title I'm going to snap it up and all my suggestions are going to be acoustic- or folk-rock, or better yet, stuff by The Band. :thumb: |
the advertisement wasn't for you...
OMFG you don't understand me :P try to do the review for Never Understand of Angra, it's folk-rock! :P cheers, man! yay! :chug: |

Does anybody put up any song suggestions that arent' some variety of metal?
I always make at least one, usually more, non-metal suggestions, and I like to think I'm a fairly big participant here. I know people like badmoon visit this thread, and even though this is forced listening, I know that no matter how much I force him to listen to technical death metal, he won't like it. EDIT: not a dibs, yet. |
hehe, i can see it
Does anybody put up any song suggestions that arent' some variety of metal?
If you look about 5 posts up, you'll see a review for Syd Barrett's Here I Go, which is about as far from metal as you can get. Surprisingly it was only given a 6.5/10, disgraceful really for a song of that quality :) |
Bump.

bump - you can't even see the suggestions on this page anymore...

OK, I'll dibs.

You couldn't have copied them over then?
Dream Theater - Home or Fatal Tragedy (Prog Metal) Angra - Carry on or Never Understand (Melodic/Epic/Classical Metal | Soft Metal / Brazillian Folk Music Fusion) Children Of Bodom - Bed Of Razors (Melodic Dark Metal, I think) The Black Mages - Clash On The Big Bridge (Jap-Metal / Videogame Soundtrack - Hard Rock) That bump was unnecessary anywa, the thread was still on the first page. EDIT: late :( |
Hehe... I got it covered.
And instead of calling bump, why not call dibs and do the review yourself? It's much better when the thread is fast moving. |
Angra - Carry On
Firstly I wouldn't call it 'Melodic/Epic/Classical Metal', Power Metal does the trick. Secondly, I have heard this band is the epitome of cheese (Not Manowar, they are the epitome of Metal!!) this should be fun. Starts with a fast, on-off sort of riff, with some nice phrasing by the drums. It enters power metal stage soon after, with some nice lead work from the guitars. Soon after, there's a quick solo by the guitar, everything else goes quiet, and he does this little run, which is pretty good. Enter verse, standard power metal vocals (i.e. higher than your girlfriend) I'm yet to hear some double kicks from the drums, which is disappointing. The verse riff is pretty good. Enter some strings, they add a nice classical element to the song. Typical power metal chorus, very uplifting, it put a smile on my face. Double kicks at last! Rejoice. After the chorus, a quick intro thing, then some more nice lead/rhythmy kind of work. Then some insane sweep picking solo, I love it. After that, there's some groovy bass line, and some jazzy trumpets going on. It's a nice little interlude, one of the better ones I've heard in power metal. Now another uplifting chorus, gotta love it. Now some strings, to add a bit more. Now backing vocals! Cheesy as you can get. Now the song goes up a semitone or so, the vocals keep getting higher and higher. The classical instruments are really excellent. The last note by the singer is frightengly high. And it ends, rather suddenly. 9/10, power metal owns. I need some more. ------ Kreator - Agents of Brutality (Thrash) Mayhem - Funeral Fog (Black metal) Darkthrone - Cromlech (Death Metal) Rhapsody - Eternal Glory (Classical Power Metal!!!) Manowar - The Gods Made Heavy Metal (Heavy Metal!!!!!) Dragonforce - Disciples of Babylon (Extreme Power Metal!!!!) Blind Guardian - I'm Alive (Power Metal!!!!) Helloween - Halloween (Power Metal!!!! - This has like 12 solos in it, it is great) And for the non metal heads: Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Funk/reggae/sort of kind of rock) I've been inspired. |

Ruined :(
I've heard some Darkthrone before, but don't own any albums or anything. Darkthrone - Cromlech - 4:11 Starts off with just an ominous, choral background tone, which soon (0:17) is broken by a riff which is actually pretty infectious, and typically dirty production. It sounds really good though, and the drums are very good too. Vocals start around 1:14, followed by some distorted, demon-emulating deep vocals, after which there's a 20 second passage without drums, just drilling that riff for a while. The drums come back in with a roll, increasing in volume as it goes, which brings us back to the deep rasp/raspy growl of the regular vocals. A different tone of guitar emerges, slightly cleaner and higher in pitch, towards the three minute mark, but just as soon stops. Then we get a solo, lasting from 3:27 to 3:46; it's a good one, fits the tone of the song. And the song ends with a slightly different variation on the main riff, which somehow sounds a bit more menaxing than before, and which slows down to a halt at 4:11 or so. 9/10 I want more. Would I listen to more of the same band? Yup. This was from Soulside Journey, yes? Songs; Axis of Advance - Primeval Expansion (death/black metal - nice use of Saving Private Ryan samples) Sceptic - Pathetic Being (technical death) Orange Goblin - The Astral Project (stoner rock) SR-71 - Let It Whip (funk rock) The Chasm - The Triumph (of my loss..) (death metal) Olivia Tremo Control - A Sunshine Fix (lo-fi Beatles-esque rock) If you've heard them all, just say; I should be able to find something you haven't heard. |

SR-71 - Let it Whip
I actually used to own one of this bands albums. It was enjoyable but simple. This song wasn't on it and I'd like to see how they're doing. It was on a movie soundtrack I see. Starts with a classic nu-metal fuzz. But wait! Here's a more classic rock sounding guitar part. This is very reminiscent of classic rock. The vocals have a wierd chorus effect (that this band uses a lot). Nu-classic-rock. That is the genre. It also reminds me of 80's Synth pop. Another genre I happen to enjoy. Lyrics are simple and corny. Basically bad. The song is really simple and needs something more. At 1:48 it turns into what would make great video game or anime music. It has that uplifting, corny, simple sound. Plus the singer sounds like he has a Japanese accent almost. Then the chorus. It sounds like a pop song. This song is unclassifieable as a genre and is not funk rock. It has elements of lots of genres. Very strange. It's all pretty lame especially the chorus. I like it though. Reminds me of watching a chick flick and enjoying it but you can't tell anyone. 7/10 Fun song, I'll dig up my old CD. Nothing to go nuts over but enjoyable. In Flames - Cloud Connected In Flames - Whoracle Opeth - The Leper Affinity Tool - Aenima Stabbing Westward - Haunting me Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile |

Reminds me of watching a chick flick and enjoying it but you can't tell anyone.
It's shocking how accurate that is. Dibs. |
I've been meaning to check these guys out since you recommended them to me in the off-topic thread, and this is a good opportunity to.
Stabbing Westwards - Haunting Me - 3:37 Starts with some electronic distortion and beeping noises, before coming in pretty much full on at 0:10 with a rhythm, not particularly exciting but suitably enhanced by the electronicness, so it's not bad. Vocals come in around 0:20; I'm not sure what to think of the voice. There might be a slight bit of distortion in it, and it's not exactly singing, more talking loudly with occasional little singing lifts. Anyway, chorus, I think, comes in at 0:40 or so, not bad. Brief instrumental break, mainly for electronic beats, followed by a momentary all-stop, before launching into what I think is the chorus proper. Closer to singing now, but I don't like the chorus much. It sounds too..something. Can't think of a word for it, maybe contrived. Another chorus starts at 1:25 or so; same rhythm, but different bits. I like it, they're not just repeating themselves with different lyrics. It's pretty good. Another chorus around 2:00 though, which I don't like. All instruments drop in volume, and whispered vocals come in. I like this bit, reminds me quite a bit of Nine Inch Nails. And now there's a buried guitar solo squealing away, which actually reminds me of some specific NIN song, though I can't put my finger on it. It's good though, and I like the way it's kinda hidden by all the rest of the music playing louder than it. Repetitions of the chorus line follow, and then instrumental outro, with occasional cries (in different speakers) of that same chorus line. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to like that, but it was pretty good. I didn't like the chorus though, at all, but the rest, especially the second verse, was good, and there's potential for really good light industrial here (and it beat Chevelle into the ground :)) 7.5/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? Yeah. I think I'll head towards the more well known for my songs this time; A Perfect Circle - Magdalena (vaguely psychedelic rock) Faith No More - Land of Sunshine Iron Maiden - Paschendaele or Paschendale, depending on spelling (heavy metal) Nickelback - Where Do I Hide (rock) - only half-decent song I've heard by them. |
(and it beat Chevelle into the ground :))
Watch it buddy (yeah it really does) Dibs/. |
Nickelback - Where do I Hide?
Shockingly cool intro. This is going to be very standard rock. At 22 a catchy riff comes in that continues for a while with slight rythmic changes. Same as the drums. Lyrics come in. Very rock and roll "I got a criminal record". Tom Petty rock and roll...but better. The chorus is the classic super catchy Nickelback. I like the verse guitar a lot. It just sort of goes wherever it wants. This song all sounds very alike but it's packed with little changes that make it interesting. There's a little solo around 2:10 that get's heavier midway and continues until around 2:40 There isn't a lot to say about this song. It is pretty standard of old fashioned R&R. It would be hard not to like but hard to get hard over. It's a good one to have on your hard-drive. 7.5/10 I'll download a little more just for fun In Flames - Cloud Connected (Melodic Death Metal) Opeth - The Leper Affinity (Long) (Death metal/Prog) Tool - Aenima (long) (it's Tool....) Maudlin of the Well - Heaven and Weak (long) (ultra prog) Marilyn Manson - Come White (nu-industrial I suppose) Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (Industrial) A Perfect Circle - Three Libras acoustic (alt/prog/art rock/unclassifieable) Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache (Metalcore) AIM me if you can't find them. I Like ToAct Gay |
EDIT: UnDibs.
This was from Soulside Journey, yes?
Indeed it was. Check out 'Accumilation of Generalisation' which is a cool instrumental, 'Iconoclasm Sweeps Cappadocia' and the self titled track. |

I've not liked Killswitch before, so I'm giving them a try. Already had my opinion on Radiohead shattered this morning, lets go two for two!
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache - Starts off with a drawn out metal chord, and another guitar line playing in a different tone in the background. I think I can hear vocals, might be non-lyrical, and they're kinda buried in the music. A low, thin growl just around the minute mark; the vocals really aren't very strong in the mix so far. Ah, "this distaaaance", clean vocals, with little instrumental backing, around 1:05. A stab of guitar after each line, not bad. Pretty good guitars after the first verse, but we're back to his fairly weak harsher vocal style, and that buried singing in the background. Instrumental break in between the end of the chorus and the next verse is alright, a little variation in the instruments keep it from being boring. And then into another chorus, confusingly soon after the last one. I don't like the chorus, so that's not good. Ah, bridge section around 3:40, I like this more, despite the weak vocals, and then some good, solid riffing, before an unexpected mellow section. I liked that whole bit. And then back into another chorus, which the song ends (sudden stop, not fade-out) after. Well, it was alright. Some bits I liked (the first bit of clean vocals; "This distance, this dissolution", some of the instrumentation, the bridge section) and some I didn't (the chorus, the vocals in general - after a strong start on the clean vocals, after "This distance, this dissolution" they were just annoying, rather than good). 7/10 Scraping it though. Would I listen to more of the same band? Maybe. Not a priority though. Songs; A Perfect Circle - Magdalena (vaguely psychedelic rock) Faith No More - Land of Sunshine Iron Maiden - Paschendaele or Paschendale, depending on spelling (heavy metal) Silverginger 5 - Divine Imperfection (rock'n'roll/pop metal) Judas Priest - Lost and Found (Ripper-era ballad, great acoustic intro) |
