*bump*

I was listening to the classic rock station today (94.7 Detroit) and thier doing a Top 400 album countdown, voted by the listeners online. Who's Next was number 5 on that list. I dunno, I thought I'd share that bit of useless information...

PinkFreud 12-12-2005 09:55 PM

i was listening to that. where do you live?

dsotm was 7. i ws expecting it to be higher.

zabbit82 12-12-2005 09:59 PM

Near Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was 94.7 WCSX FM, and DSOTM was number 3.

I see you also live in Michigan, near where?

Lunch 12-13-2005 01:20 PM

The whole Rock and metal forum is from Michigan.

It's usually hard for the Who to be high up on those lists because they don't have a definitive "best" album (even the to public). I guess the list people favor Who's Next, but legions of fans would call Tommy, Quadrophenia, or Live at Leeds their best.

King_Of_Terrors 12-13-2005 01:27 PM

Lunch, are you and Lunch89 (or whatever the numbers are) the same person?

Lunch 12-13-2005 01:28 PM

Yes, we are.

King_Of_Terrors 12-13-2005 01:28 PM

Weird. Cool.

I read this write up a while back, but never posted.

Good job!

Seafroggys 12-13-2005 02:14 PM

i heard heaven and hell off of live at leeds.......are you sure the Who are mortal humans, because after hearing that I felt like they were gods.

Lemme rephrase that....I felt like they were Gods.

Lunch 12-13-2005 02:17 PM

I get that same feeling. The instrumentals (mostly Entwislte and Moon, obviously, but Townshend carries his weight fine) are absolutely stunning on that song. Also check out Young Man Blues for a similar effect.

Oh I assure you, collectively they were Gods. And Pete and Rog still malke fine Half-Gods. :)

This is my 5000Th post. w00t. :chug:

And I wanted to share it with the Who board. Which I consider my MX home when it comes to threads. It's been a pleasure posting here for the last 6 months or so And I want to wish eveyone here a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It's been a real highlight of my online existence posting alongside all you Who maniacs. :)

So, now to Who business. It seems Pete is invigorated these days. He seems to be going through a very creative period which seems to be spurred on by his new relationship with one Rachel Fuller, who is also a recording artist of some merit and is active on Pete's website to an extent. Pete's website is a hotbed of Who/Pete news and activity these days, and I recommend a visit to any Who fan who reads this. And right now a bootleg is running there on Towser TV of the Who live in Irvine, California from the year 2000. Pete says it's one of the better gigs they did with John before he passed, RIP.

Anyway, below are a couple of recent entries that may be of interest to Who fans from Pete's Diaries. Sounds like we have something to look forward to in 2006.

24 December 2005

I will go on tour.....

As it seems everyone in the world is already making announcements about a forthcoming Who tour I figured I should make my own statement.

I have said many times, repeated up until a few days ago, that I am reticent about committing to a tour without a completed new Who album under my belt.

As things stand I am still pushing to produce some more songs. So the announcement may seem premature. It is not.

I certainly don't give a flying f**k whether anything I write is a hit, or will get played on my beloved rock radio, or sell a million - or might not fit because it sounds like a Broadway tune, or as though I've 'stolen' Tom Waits voice (exactly how does one steal a voice that was already on loan from someone as esteemed as Louis Armstrong or Earl Hines? God knows how Tom feels about the idea I've stolen his voice.)

What I care about is that Roger Daltrey feels comfortable with the songs I write so he can sing a few of them on stage - while I lunge around looking gorgeous and playing show-off guitar like a kid in a music shop. After forty-five years of this crap I've just started to enjoy it.

So why the sudden announcements?

Who manager Bill Curbishley has come up with a great scheme that may circumvent the need for a CD full of Green Day and White Stripes impersonations. No, it is not an 'EP'. It is a truly inspired idea. I'll let his agents pass you the news when they have it polished like a new Pimp-My-Ride Hummer.

What his brilliant idea means is that if I don't have a full thirty tracks ready to go, we can settle on what I do have. So I can commit.

There has been a footnote to the articles I've read that suggest that my girlfriend Rachel Fuller may be opening some Who shows. She probably won't. If we are going to be nepotistic I would like to invite my brother Simon's band CASBAH CLUB. I saw them recently in London and they are intense: Who fans would love them.

Rachel is planning touring versions of IN THE ATTIC and BASEMENT JAM, her hugely popular webcast talk and music shows. This not necessarily modest circus would follow the Who's own FAT CHANCE calvacade. I'm sure she'll play some regular club dates along the way too. I hope Roger and I will be able to drop in on some of those too. It would be great to keep this tour flexible, dangerous, exciting, innovative and accessible as well as providing high-end rock shows for those of us who like pretty lights and songs we already know.

I have high hopes for the whole tour to be shared to a wide audience at home in a mixture of PAY FOR VIEW and FREE special webcasts. Some of the proceeds will go to charity of course.

I also have a very, very cool surprise to announce in June, just before the tour kicks off.

Now leave me the f**k alone while I help support my son while he gets through his exams. - Pete Townshend

22 December 2005

The Who at Irvine August 2000

At last I have emerged from TWO WEEKS of DVD burning hell (I should have gone to a tech class) and in an hour or two will be able to put up William Snyder's beautiful footage of the band when we played one of our last really great shows with John Entwistle.

This will be looped on TOWSERTV. I may produce some highlights for download.

This is not a complete show, William occasionally moved around the hall, and there was no camera to fill in the shots. But even so, I have smoothed the cuts, and the whole effect is of being at a great Who show, on the stage with the band or the front row. I hope this will see us all through Christmas and the Holidays.

Enjoy. - Pete Townshend

HURRAY!

Edit: While reading that article, I was once again reminded that Pete Townsend is a damn funny guy.

Lunch 12-24-2005 01:39 PM

Happy holidays to you to John, and to everyone else on MX. That's good news from Pete.

Dragon_Prince 12-24-2005 02:08 PM

HAppy Holidays all

may we all see the who on the next tour

And I'm going to get the Tommy/Quadrophenia live dvd ^^

Lunch 12-25-2005 10:30 AM

Good idea, I like that DVD alot.

I got Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere - The Complete Who Chronicle coffee table book for Christmas and the Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD.

Dragon_Prince 12-25-2005 02:05 PM

Yup it's a very good dvd(Baba O' Riley just owns)

Live at the royal albert hall is also a cd I like, allthough I think the tracklist was sometimes a bit weak.
royal albert hall needed more Tommy stuff
the dvd's needed more oldies, like my generation, magic bus etc

But if you have them both it's great :D

Oh man, I have Christmas envy.

I've never seen this book, but I know I want it. And I didn't get the Tommy/Quadrophenia DVD for Christmas. Maybe because I forgot to ask for it :-\ Daaamn!! :smash:

Tough luck John. Even picking the book up makes me happy. It has a day-by-day account of important Who events up to 1978. And tons of great pictures.

i got Quad for christmas, and even though it is a damn fine album, I don't feel like its edgy or rocky enough, its too smooth and produced. I still think Tommy is the best. Any other thoughts on this?

Even though the PUnk and the Godfather is a kickass song.

The "over-producing" on Quadrophenia gets annoying to me sometimes, I just feel like they refine it too much or that there is too much going on. I wouldn't say that it wasn't rocky enough though, some of their hardest rockers are on Quadrophenia. The Real Me, Punk and the Godfather, I've Had Enough, Dr. Jimmy, and Love Reign O'Er me are all classic rocking Who.

^^Hmm. I've never heard Quad as smooth or overproduced. I've always felt it was raw and rockin' and explosive. For those who feel like that, though, a version of it was remixed by Enwhistle for the soundtrack to the film. Many feel this is the definitive version, as Entwhistle cleans things up and cuts down the fat. Leaner sound altogether. Although I'm not sure if it has ever been made available digitally.

Quadrophenia > Tommy

But that's just me. I was brought up on Quadrophenia and Who's Next.

And I just got The Who by Numbers and Live At The Isle of Wight yesterday :)

/starts controversy. Prepares for war.

zabbit82 12-26-2005 07:29 PM

Well my dad always used to play that more when I was little, so that grew on me. Tommy is good also, but I dont have that one. My dad does, but out of personal preference, I prefer Quad. I'm a hardcore Zep fan, so The Who aren't really my trump cards for debate.

JohnXDoesn't 12-26-2005 07:46 PM

^^Yeah. I don't debate this stuff, either. I'm just trying to take the piss outta Lunch because I want his shiny new book. :smash:

Sorry I couldn't read what you were saying because I was busy reading MY BRAND NEW DEFINITIVE WHO BOOK THAT YOU DON'T OWN.

Seafroggys 12-26-2005 11:43 PM

haha pure ownage

it would have been nice to get the tommy/quad DVD, as I've always wanted to see live Tommy in its entirety. How does the '89 show compare to like, for example, the Woodstock footage from TKAA?

Lunch 12-26-2005 11:45 PM

It's alittle over the top, I definitely prefer the four core members performing it. The 1989 is a lot more theatrical because of how many people they have and how they put the show on. And it's got a little bit of that cheesey 80's-ness. Overall however, it's still Daltrey, Townshend and Entwistle, and it's still Tommy, so it's pretty good.
