The Two Gallants - Fail Hard to Regain

Cool, interesting song. Starts off with a simple, folky verse with just guitar and singing. The chorus is a bit more hardcore, with powerful drums, guitar and singing. The singer sounds kinda like a modern Bob Dylan but a bit different. Pretty good. Ill check them out more

Minor Threat - Minor Threat

This is one of my favorite Minor Threat songs. I really like. The guitar riff is pretty cool. The chords he uses are good. I like how it speeds up during the chorus (singing, "We're just a Minor Threat!") The song is energetic, which is obviously a good thing. Unfortunatly, the song is pretty short, but so are many of Minor Threat's songs. Overall, a good song from a good band.

one of my favourites. has a smooth slapped bassline that goes over one of my favourite guitar riffs. when the chorus goes over the sung cannon of " Gargoyles yeah, yeah , yeah" it is just excellent. the drums are simple and pleasant to hear over the bassline and taht makes it all fit together.

The Clash - Tommy Gun

After a short chaotic sounding intro where the drumming reflects the title it goes into a fairly typical Clash song. If you like this sort of punk then you won't find any problems with it. Joe Strummer barks his vocals with passion as usual although often they feel a bit lost in the music. The best thing about this son is the morse-code like guitars which are excellent throughout and really add to the song. My main criticism is that it does sometimes feel a bit stop-start so just as you're getting into the music it'll break for a little drum fill where you just wish it would get back to the chorus. Because of this it feels slightly overlong like they've stitched the song together from some different ones. There's a change of pace that gives the song a more military feel towards the end which works well. It's a good song but could do with the excising of some drum-fills and a better producer. Mick Jones really redeems most of these faults though. 7/10

Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere

Although that hotel commercial kinda ruins it, great song. In the verse he has a basic country guitar riff. He names all the places he's been to, and he goes really fast. Really catchy. Then he goes to the chorus where he sings "I've been everywhere man, I've been everywhere." Good song just like everything by Cash.

I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement - The Ramones

Where can one start reviewing this song? It's very Ramones, in the way that people who don't like the Ramones don't like i.e. very simple, no lyrical depth whatsoever, sounds very "samey" when compared to things off the same album. But really, people who hate the Ramones are just cocksmokers, and none of their points are valid. "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement" is a really simple, fun, stupid song, something which is way more "punk" for me than somone yelling at me about the government. Essentially, if you don't like the Ramones, you will hate this even more than some of their more standout tracks (The Blitzkrieg Bop etc), but if you're an intelligent person, you won't mind this at all, although it's not quite different enough to really get into.

Velvet Underground - Beginning to See the Light

The guitar, bass and drums set in immediately followed shortly by the vocals with a "I'm beginning to see the light". In effect there is no real discernable introduction. The vocals tend to be slightly muted with the occasional wailing thrown in for good measure. The pace changes rarely with a handful of quieter parts doing little to break the monotony. The biggest surpise is at 1:23 the singer goes for the high notes (and later too). I personally found it most unpleasant. Overall I found the song boring and unremarkable besides the (at times) painful vocals. I found myself hanging out for the quiet parts where the singing was considerably better.

this is actually one of the few emo songs i like. starts out with a simple-but-catchy bassline and drum beat. the vocals hit you next: they sound almost like a whisper, and are eerie and haunting. the song explodes into a huge chorus with a wall of guitars and melodic screams. lyrics are little better than your typical emo lyrics. the bottom line: this song will get stuck in your head all day. Bad Brains - Sailin' On

I have a 7" Danzig/Bad Brains and I haven't really heard much Bad Brains other than that. I'm glad I gave this a listen tho, because it is very good. It starts off with the drum sticks counting off and right into really fast 80s hardcore beat, singing right away. The chorus is: "I'm sailin', sailin' on - I'm movin', I'm moving on.... but then I cant understand the rest, but its still good. After the second chorus there is a nice little guitar solo which really gets you into it. The song keeps the same tempo basiclly the whole time which is good, cause its fast. It ends with a little drum fill and crashes fading out... I really enjoyed it.

The Briggs aren't a complicated band and this isn't a complicated song but a lot of the time you don't want complicated, this is punk for christ's sake. It's supposed to be simple and catchy and this song definitely is. Starting slowly it quickly builds up in the manner of a good Dropkick Murphys song. The guitar work is pretty cool during this section. THe chorus is anthemic as I knew it would be. This song fits all the requirements for a punk rock anthem. Vaguely inspiring and unifying lyrics, singalong chorus and a long chant towards the end of the song. I can see exactly how this song works but nevertheless I still really enjoy, I'm a sucker for this kind of thing. I'd be happy to singalong to this song anytime. 8/10

The Dwarves - Runaway No. 2

It starts with a very simple, yet infectious drum beat. It just says "pop song" straight away, uncomplicated and with shallow lyrics. Speaking of the lyrics, they're sexually inclined, intended to make listener wince. I thought it was quite an amusing song, and while not quite my taste in music, it was still worth a listen. If a mind numbing song, not great musical talent, is your desire in a song and you are not easily offended by obscenities like incest...then go ahead, I liked it.

This is a classic slice of punk from Husker Du's genre-shattering creation Zen Arcade. Like most of the songs on that album it suffers from being heard out of sequence but also like most of the songs it works fine as a stand-alone piece. Drenched in the same static-feedback that populates the album it's a lot more chilled-out than much of Zen Arcade being almost poppy in parts, especially the vocals (although they do occasionally stray towards a darker emotional tone which makes the song even better.) The lyrics are great too. The music is excellent through-out, tight drumming, solid basslines and insistent riffs. This is a great song. It keeps the perfect balance of poppy, emotional and deep going right up until it fades out. 9/10

This cover of the Dylan classic is strange. Its changed from a half talking half singing song to a lively reggae tune. I don't know anything about Abijah, but hes not the best reggae singer imo. The reggae beat isn't played as well as in songs of Bob marley, etc. and doesn't havethe same dub feel to it. After a few listens, more things fall into place and it sound better, however.

I really like a lot of folk punk, so I chose this song. That and he recommended it at the end there.
It commences with an awkward noise. Then it goes into the nice guitar strumming and then into a familiar beat. This song sounds like another song I have heard before. He then begins to sing and he sounds really good. The guitar is well accented by drums and a very good bassist. I really like the acoustic guitar strumming, it's very soothing. As he starts the bridge the violin comes in beautifully and he talks about overcomming the war, metaphorically. I like his word choice and symbology. He can hit notes very high as well. The song is somewhat repetitive, but it is still solid. It goes back into the intro beat and ends nicely. I really liked this song, and I can sense much potential. I will be downloading it. I just disliked how I heard same exact notes and beat before.

There's not much to say about this song. It's just a pretty standard folk-pop song with relationship-concerned lyrics. The guitar provides a nice, if sparse, accompanient. The guy's got an okay voice, the lyrics are fairly standard fare. I didn't like this song but I also couldn't hate it. Maybe you have to be in the right mood for it, then you might feel it's the greatest song ever made, but as it is it was just average. 6/10

I like the little drum beat. The guitar noise is cool. You could hear H.R. talking in the background. This descending thing is pretty cool. Kinda freaking me out. Riffing. I like the ring out bit. Once again, H.R.'s vocals dominate everything. Kinda slow for a Bad Brains song. The riff gets boring after a bit. I love those squeaking vocals. This song has to be the slowest non-reggae Bad Brains song I've ever heard. It's just the same riff over and over. Some cymbals, a drum roll, and now a crazy solo. Not really playing ability crazy but the sound. Well, that solo was short, back to the same grind. I love Bad Brains but there are definetly better songs than that.

I haven't heard much Bob Marley, and the stuff I have heard was very mundane of reggae styled music.
It starts with the typical drum intro, then goes into a really cool riff. After a nice stroke of the guitar, it goes into the mundane upstrokes. He then begins to singing, and his voice, like always; is okay. "We're going to dance to the music, dance. Forget your troubles and dance." Yes, yes I've heard that before Bob. I like the song, but it's just too dry for me. It's the same upstrokes, same dry singing, and lyrical value. There is a lot of tautology, and then it ends by fading out. In the background there is faint soloing going on.

My Love My Way is a really unique and quite amazing album so when MLIW released Witness expectation were high. I have not as yet heard it so i'm glad i have a reason to check it out.

The song starts with good guitar riff that sounds almost melancholic, it continues throughout the song. Next a steady drum beat comes in, and all the instruments build up to the introduction of the vocals. The vocals are one of the best things about this song, sincere and life-weary, which fits in very well with the lyrics. The lyrics are also very good. Mainly, it's hard to find anything that sounds as unique and as good as this in modern hardcore.

This is a pretty typical 80s hardcore. Fast, angry and chaotic. The guitar is raw, the drums are pounding and the bass is unusually prominent but this helps the song. The vocals are very typical 80s hardcore, shouty and they get the point across. The music is perfect for the song, backing up the vocals perfectly. There are some really cool guitar fills during the chorus and a short solo that is cool but doesn't overstay it's welcome. After the final chorus there's a fill from each instrument before the song ends with an angry scream of "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" This is classic 80s hardcore: brief and brutal. 8/10

Now this is what I call an 80s hardcore song. From the classic This is Boston Not LA comp, it tells the story of getting beaten up at a party for being punk. The music is fast, buzzy and rudimentarily produced. The lyrics are juvenile but cool and perfectly articulated by the angry adolescent rasp of the lead singer. Does anything encapsulate the futile but admirable anger and rebellion of much of punk-rock than telling some rednecks who just kicked the crap out of you to "Fuck Off"? The chorus (just the title shouted by the backing singers) leaves a bit to be desired but otherwise, this is a great 80s hardcore song. 9/10
