What made you think that? |
Kosher means fit in hebrew... literally, it is meant to mean food fit for consumption. It mostly applies to animals - there is no such thing as unkosher milk or vegitables. Only some animals may be eaten by Jews. Jews can eat any animal with split hooves and four stomaches - cow, sheep, goat etc. We can't eat camel, for example, which has four stomachs but unsplit hooves, or pig which has split hooves but doesn't have four stomaches. A kosher fish must have both scales and gills (so no shelfish or sharks etc.) I'm not sure of the rule of poultry.
In meat and poultry, the animals must be killed by slitting the two veins that lead to the brain. THis must be done with a sharp, SHARP knife while the animal is concious. The reason why it has to be sharp is to be kind to the animal - the animal doesn't feel pain initialy due to the sharpness, and by the time it wouldhave felt it, it'd be dead already. This is similar to the halal process, the difference being in halal slits only of the two veins. Hence, all kosher food is also halal, but halal is not kosher. oh, and Chris.... Honestly, I don't know. It could be the 05 join date, which I associate with younger members for some reason.

When I'm at Uni, I end up eating halal food most of the time, but not through design. There are just so many people obliged (or supposedly obliged) to eat halal that it's easier. |
Wow, just farted horribly.

I think Aaron (my name) is a Hebrew name too. But I'm not Jewish.
