First of all, to ElectricalStorm: AWESOME interpretation dude. I'd love for you to post an interpretation of the whole MAYH album because I just plain don't get it. I mean, the basics are obvious: a man dies and has to watch his lover forget him. But what the heck is the Demon of the Fall? What's it got to do with anything? Who is running away? The lover? Why? I just plain don't get it. I have my own ideas, but I'm sure they're pretty off. ElectricalStorm or anyone else, wtf is up with this story? :)

Anyhoo, it's most definitely pronounced "O-pEth" like in the word "pet". Just watch Lamentations! That's how he said it at sounds of the underground, too.

And I am glad to hear that Opeth didn't like the bands on SotU, because when they were in Atlanta, Mikael stood on stage and smilled and sorta bobbed to Clutch: the absolute worst band ever! Towards the end, Mikael was obviously getting bored. He had a beer in his hand, so maybe he was a little tipsy. Just glad to know they didn't HONESTLY like Clutch. LoG was cool. And the only band Lamb of God mentioned was Opeth. Everyone in Atlanta was absolutely floored when Opeth played. They had never heard of them, but Opeth was the reason I was even THERE!!!!! Holy jeeze, I can't wait 'till Nov. 8! Opeth in all their glory! No 30 min sets there! :)

On a side note: I'm really thinking of getting a CD sized Opeth "O" tattood on my back. It'll be my first (and only) tattoo. Thoughts, everyone?
Mikael likes Clutch and High on Fire, they were the only two bands he admits to liking from the Sounds of the Underground tour.
Personally, I would not get the tattoo. I love the band and all, but I just wouldn't do it because what if they change and you hate them, what if they break up, what if you wind up with a really bad tattoo artist? Why on your back? So you can't see it if it turns out bad? Seriously dude, what's the point?
Lastly, the band discourages fans from getting tattoos.

Darkness 10-20-2005 06:03 PM

They do? Look at the Martins dude.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea to get a music related tattoo. Sure you love Opeth now, but will you always? Might regret it someday, no matter how unlikely it seems now. I bet you never thought you'd stop listening to Limp Bizket either :p

The Brad 10-20-2005 06:37 PM
They do? Look at the Martins dude.
I am talking about band related tattoos here.

Shadows 10-20-2005 06:38 PM

As expensive as it is, tattoos are removable.

Shattered_Future 10-20-2005 06:40 PM

Yea, but it's painful as hell though. Or so I've heard.

I'd advise against the tattoo, for the reasons everybody else is...you may like the band now, but you might not 3, 4, 10 years from now. And then you got this almost non-removeable thing.

I'd say get Opeth merchandise instead. Supports the band as well.

Shadows 10-20-2005 06:42 PM

Get the tattoo. It will force you to keep loving the band.

strat 10-20-2005 06:45 PM

Hells Bells 10-20-2005 06:48 PM

You shouldn't need a tattoo to keep loving the band if you're really into them.

They have a whole section dedicated to Fanart, which includes tatoos...I don't think they discourage it.

Get it. Even if you hate them later, you can tell the girls it stands for "oral".

Even if I decided I wanted a tattoo, I don't know if I could bring myself to get one. Hell, if I can't commit to a woman, how am I supposed to commit to a permanent drawing on my skin?

Magicaltroll 10-20-2005 07:02 PM

What's everyone think of the new Opeth album?

Killtacular 10-20-2005 07:10 PM
I always had trouble with Åkerfeldt's name, I always said ack-er-felt, but it's actually oak-er-felt.
I was under the impression it was pronounced OW-ker-felt.
What's everyone think of the new Opeth album?
It's crap*.

*by Opeth standards

Kage 10-20-2005 07:13 PM

I think it's amazing. My second favorite.

Deth 10-20-2005 07:15 PM

I've always said Ak-er-feld. I'm not changing it either, cause I'm stubborn like that.

Magicaltroll 10-20-2005 07:15 PM

I agree with crap, by Opeth standards.

I just don't like it... It seems like a weird Deliverance album.

And I really dislike the softer stuff they did on the album.

Killtacular 10-20-2005 07:21 PM

It's my favorite Opeth album. :(

Honestly, Ghost Reveries is the reason I'm posting here now. Without it, I never would've been motivated to search earlier Opeth, even though I had listened and hated it all a year before. GR struck me as incredible, and now thanks to that album, I've realized how much other Opeth I love.

Deth 10-20-2005 07:24 PM

Pish posh. I love Ghost Reveries.

Killtacular 10-20-2005 07:42 PM

It's at the bottom of my Opeth ladder.

Hells Bells 10-20-2005 07:44 PM
What's everyone think of the new Opeth album?
There's been a lot of discussion about it for like the past 30 pages (bitching about how BWP was better :p)

Personally, I like the new direction Opeth's taken with GR. As much as I love their other albums, I'd rather have them evolve then exhaust the style they did with previous work.

Agreed.

Just because they have a section on their site doesn't mean they condone it.
"I have Mikael's signature tattooed too. I saw them play in Dublin about 2 years ago and got the tattoo done the following day. He just looked shocked when I told him what i was doing and he tried talking me out of it but he still went ahead and signed my leg. And iŽll never regret It. It was a great night with less than 150 at the gig. I had a drink and got pictures with the entire band." Paul

Jude 10-20-2005 10:21 PM

I wouldn't get a tattoo of it, but that's me. I'm just not a tattoo kind of guy--too indecisive.

We've already discussed the new album I believe  but, it's good, but it lacks a certain something the other albums (except Deliverance) have. But I still have faith in Opeth that they will make a better one.

Hells Bells 10-20-2005 10:52 PM

I can understand why he'd be shocked about someone getting his autograph as a tatoo. The symbol's a different story, it's artistic and it looks cool on its own, but an autograph...
Anyway, I wouldn't get the actual symbol, but that type of design is awesome, and it gave me the idea for mine.

Det_Nosnip 10-20-2005 11:32 PM

Ghost Reveries: near the top for me. Fantastic album.

Hmm...listening to Opeth isn't really a phase for me. I don't envision myself not liking them in 10 years, unless they made a St Anger album or something. Even then, if people gave me shit about it, I could just say "Still Life, man...."

matt4 10-21-2005 01:21 AM

about the tattoo: I'm kinda trying to talk myself out of wanting it. Maybe it's just a phase. We'll see. If I do get it, I'll post a pic :P

Ghost Reveries is a solid album. Ghost Reveries is the weakest album Opeth has ever recorded. I just get bored listening to it now. It's got it's moments, no doubt. Maybe I wore it out too soon and need some time away from it for a while, but I just think it's weak. Harlequin Forrest is the worst Opeth song ever. It's still good, but it's just boring after the first 5 or so minutes.

Which is it?

Ghost Reveries is excellent IMO. I also have BWP and Still Life.

lost_profits 10-21-2005 02:07 PM

harlequin forest is directionless. easily the weakest song on Ghost Reveries.
Baying of the hounds, ghost of perdition, even beneath the mire have now all grown on me. The soft songs are pretty much flawless too.

Shadows 10-21-2005 02:08 PM

Are you kidding? Reverie/Harlequin Forest is one of the best on that album. The vocals are incredible.

Oh man, this is my favorite GR song how can you say that?.....i love the song.

spacemanjack 10-21-2005 02:36 PM

I third that motion, Harlequin Forest is my favorite track on GR.

Anyone else absolutely dazzled by the part of Baying of the Hounds that starts at 5:40? In my book that is right up there with any other part they've done, maybe my favorite riff in the whole Opeth catalog (taking over from the outro to Moonlapse Vertigo).......seeing that live almost made me cry.

Baying of the hounds is my favorite track off GR, and that part is my favorite part out of the entire cd. I can literally feel the music when the keyboard synth comes in and takes me into a heavenly trance. I especially love that keyboard part of that riff section. Easily one of the best Opeth riff/sections ever, period.

Darkness 10-21-2005 04:11 PM

Baying Of The Hounds, Ghost Of Peridition, Beneath the Mire, in that order, are my favorite songs. :)

Kage 10-21-2005 04:17 PM

Hey, I'm seeing Opeth in a little under 4 hours, so I'm pretty psyched. Anyone who's been to a show on the current tour, what is the order of the bands? Who plays first? I need to know, because of ride arrangments, and if Fireball Ministry opens, then I won't mind being a little late.

I went to the Hollywood/LA show, and the opening band was "Eyes of fire" and they played for about 30-40 min.

here's a clip of the keyboard part of the amazing riff in "baying of the hounds."

Kage 10-21-2005 04:30 PM

So it was an opening band, and then Pelican came on?

UpperDecker 10-21-2005 05:10 PM

I love GR but it definitely isn't their best. Ghost of Perdition and Beneath The Mire are my favorite and Atonement and Hours of Wealth are my least favorite. Atonement is a good song there just seems to be alot of empty space in it. any comments?

Shadows 10-21-2005 05:12 PM

Atonement is my least favorite on the album. I like every song on GR except that one. There's just something about it; too boring. It's like filler.
