Dumb question time. Will a Ibanez pedal work with a Engl pre-amp? Specifically the below pre-amp and pedal.

Engl e530 pre-amp:

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. The Ibanez uses a 1/4th jack and that is what the pre-amp specifies. I just ran across that pre-amp tonight and while I haven't done a lot of research on it (read reviews, looked at some youtube videos, read a little of the instruction manual) I am thinking it would be great for the apartment living I'll inevitably be doing once I get a job. It has an input jack for headphones, a built in 2 x 1 5W power amp. I'll just pick up an Avatar cabinet and that pre-amp and I'm set. If I need it in the future I'll pickup a power-amp.

Hey LFD, I've been considering the ENGL 530 myself. However, if you can get hold of a Huges and Kettner "Cream Machine" or "Metal Master"

I can very much recommend these. They have a tube preamp stage and also a 5W power amp. Plenty loud, not sufficient for playing with a drum but just right to fiddle for yourself.

I'm kind of turning into a distortion nut. I have a Big Muff and a Tubescreamer, I love using them separately and together, but I think I would feel much better about myself if I had a third. Any ideas?

I'm leaning towards a Rat, but I haven't made any decisions yet.

This has always been my username.

Right now I'm playing through a Vox AD100VT.

The next amp I get will be an all tube combo. Possibly a Twin Reverb, maybe a Traynor, I'm still undecided.

I'd hold off buying dirt pedals if you're planning to change amps in the near future. It'd be like buying clothes for a girlfriend you haven't met yet in the hope they'll fit.

I'm not making the connection as, as far as I know, I've never heard a Tubescreamer through an AC30.

If you are chasing a specific tone, and you're buying your gear with that sound in mind, you probably won't run into issues. If you are just buying gear that someone told you was good and you've always wanted to try, you can find instances where a strength of your pedal is accentuating a weakness in your amp.

For instance, my Rivera Suprema's dirt channel is voiced like a hot rodded marshall. It's 80's metal all the way, complete with the high end sizzle and "spit". If I put a bright pedal in front of it, it's like razors to the eardrum.

For the most part it can be fixed with knob twiddling, but I just prefer to keep bright pedals out of the chain to begin with, and nip the headache in the bud.

In that specific example, it's because the AC30 already boosts the mids a lot; that's kinda what that signature AC30 sound represents. The tubescreamer ALSO boosts mids, a lot; and you end up with this ridiculously mid-heavy tone.

Another example is the big muff. It has a very scooped tone, so with a humbuckered guitar into an old-style fender amp, there aren't going to be any mids at all.

There are no settings on a TS that don't boost the mids, and no settings on a stock big muff that don't cut them.

And those are just EQ issues.

Also, if you're actually interested in dirt pedals, learn to build them yourself. You'll be embaressed by what you used to pay when you see what's actually inside some of these boxes, it's extremely rewarding and you very quickly approach a point where you're able to start designing dirts yourself for the sound you want, if you have a fair understanding of electronics.

Just for reference, I've played a Rat and I know I like what it does, which is why I mentioned it as a possibility.

As far as building my own stuff, I have no idea how I would go about that. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to that kind of thing.

Anyway, I'm not after any specific tone. I'm not really one of those guys. I just want what sounds good to me. As I said, for distortion, I've been making a lot of use of running my pedals separately and together for different sounds, but I feel my setup would be much more complete with one more.

Well a rat is a very versatile pedal, between a TS, a rat and a muff you cover a LOT of ground

Especially combining the ts with the muff for more mids

from there tbh the only way to go is to get an EQ pedal and use that to shape your toanz

It was J. Mascis that did it to me when I saw Dinosaur Jr. last year. He had several different distortions. Every time you're standing there thinking, "His guitar couldn't get any more distor... OH MY GOD! DID A HELICOPTOR JUST LAND IN HERE?!?"

With just the two I can get some wicked tones, but I just love the combining of different distortions to change the sound, give a boost, etc.

I don't have too many pedals, but I've got pretty much all I could want. I really want a wah, though.

I could sell my flanger (because I don't really have any use for it) and pick up a wah and a Rat (or maybe some other one that I haven't even tried out yet) and I think I'd be in pretty good shape.
