No way. I hate the way a B-string feels on a 34" scale.
Lolwut? B is fine on a 34".

fatbandit 09-17-2009 02:25 PM

Not every 34" B feels the same.

Of particular note:
On September 21st, the two men [Cave and Ellis] release a collection of their instrumental film music, White Lunar, including their soundtracks to The Road and The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford — and they’re also readying an early-2010 album from their other band, Grinderman. No layabout, Cave even sat in with Ellis’ band, the Dirty Three, at last weekend’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. “I played a bit of piano with them,” Cave says. “It was an honor. I’m working with Warren Ellis pretty much continuously on one thing or another.”

I'd want a wider neck for a 5-string, personally.

I'll just stick with 4-strings. If I need higher notes, I've got four 6-strings and an 8-string that will suffice.
Lies! Everyone wants 10mm spacing.
Not every 34" B feels the same.
No, but a 35" B does feel better than a 34".
Lolwut? B is fine on a 34".
So sayeth you. I've disliked the B-string on every 34" I've ever played, especially the ones on Fenders. Then again, we have different playing styles. I'm an agressive fingerstyle player.
Can someone hook me up with a copy of Cubase? A recent-ish one...
Lol Get the crack of Sonar 8. It blows the **** out of Cubase.

fatbandit 09-17-2009 03:32 PM

I was going with Cubase because it's something I'm familiar with, but I just got the torrent of Sonar anyway, so we'll see how I go ;p
I've disliked the B-string on every 34" I've ever played
That is because you have never played my 34" B, baby.

FunkMetalBass 09-17-2009 04:15 PM
That is because you have never played my 34" B, baby.
I would finger the sh*t out of your 34" B...

Maybe slap it around a little bit...

Slide my hands all up and down it...

This thread is out of hand. Damn you, PA.

fatbandit 09-17-2009 04:21 PM

so many things affect string tension though, not just scale length.

FunkMetalBass 09-17-2009 04:39 PM
so many things affect string tension though, not just scale length.
I agree. But I've yet to find a 34" scale bass with a B-string that I thought played as nice as a 35" scale one. With the 35" scale, I can use a .135 or .140 and get a more growly tone than I can with a 34" scale and a .145. Not saying that it doesn't exist, but I have yet to experience it.

It's all personal preference, and I prefer the 35" scale.

fatbandit 09-17-2009 04:55 PM

Meh. I've played 35s with 135 Bs and been disappointed. There's still more to it :)

On another note, just installed Sonar 8, and after figuring out how the hell to install the damn thing with all these patches and ISO things I've never used before, I get the following when I try to start it up:

SONAR is not properly installed. Please reinstall it using your original CD.

What the actual hell is this all about. Google is telling me nothing.

burtonbassist_102 09-17-2009 07:31 PM

the b on my yamaha RBX775 kills, and its a 34".

wicked dude, I'm going to order it.

Stupid colnago frame didn't fit my parts, so I'm going to look at a rare steel frame tomorrow.

Damn, that sucks.

Efrim 09-17-2009 10:47 PM

I was pretty disappointed at first, but I'm getting fairly excited about this other frame.
Argon 18 made from Columbus steel. Neat.

I have become a morning person. I can't fall back asleep after my girlfriend gets up to go to school, so now I'm up at 8am everyday.

I hate being a morning person. I'm up at 7 or 7:30 pretty much every day. My oatmeal and I like to hang out.

Epidemechanical 09-18-2009 07:09 AM

Mornings are my worst enemy.

FunkMetalBass 09-18-2009 09:12 AM

I just need the DiMarzio Ultra J's, the Hipshot Ultralites, and the new neck and I'm goood.

Anybody here use a MightyMite neck? For $100, I'm thinking I can't go wrong.

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:17 AM

I'm considering getting new machine heads. And by considering I mean I don't know where to get them or what is good. And I also want one of those things that makes it drop tune easily, of which I can't remember the name.

Hipshot Xtender.

Any parts place that ships internationally will have them. The Xtenders run ~$80 here in the states, though, so you'll be putting a pretty penny into new tuners.

Do you find that your jazz is a little neck heavy? I have yet to find a bass that really balances like I want it to. I'm hoping those hipshot ultralites work out.

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:24 AM

No my jazz isn't fender, it's pretty heavy in the body and has a p-style neck on it so it balances perfectly. Only downside is it's a bit heavy.

The place I usually get most of my gear off is a bit pricey for machine heads fullstop, I don't just want generic crap. It's strange.

FunkMetalBass 09-18-2009 09:26 AM

Ships to Australia:

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:29 AM

That's who I use.

The machine heads are expensive.

gaslight 09-18-2009 09:33 AM

Look at Schaller for the heads. You'll need to order through a store though most likely.

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:33 AM

I want these:

http://www.guitarparts.co.nz/cart/Details.cfm?ProdID=1165&category=

But $24 AU each? That seems expensive to me. Plus if they don't fit, I'm ****ed.

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:35 AM

Like these gas?

And why the hell are hipshots so expensive?
http://www.guitarparts.co.nz/cart/Details.cfm?ProdID=1361&category=

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:36 AM

Schaller 4-a-side chrome keys, this is what I should get.

http://www.guitarparts.co.nz/cart/Details.cfm?ProdID=854&category=

gaslight 09-18-2009 09:39 AM

Music things are expensive because the industry survives on inordinate markups, bargains are almost never a good item, the real success is in finding the products that are worth the large money by virtue of quality.

And yeah man, looks pretty tight.

Browse their site to see some mouth watering stuff

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:42 AM

Well I'm about to order. Schaller vs. Gotoh? I use a gotoh bridge and have no troubles.

Currently, they are the only company that makes anything like that (unless Zon does, but I think even they use Hipshots along with their special Manring bridge), so they can set the price however high they'd like.

Now, if you wanted to order through basspartsresource.com, you could transfer me the funds on PayPal, and I could just ship them along to you. I doubt it would cost more than $20 to ship tuners from here to you.

EDIT:
Schaller and Gotoh are really on par with each other - you wont go wrong either way.

Just two very fine companies I think, no significant pros v cons to either decision that I am aware of. I'm going to be outfitting my fretless with a Schaller bridge, tuners and knobs to get some hands on time with them. If all goes well I'll do up my other two basses with them also.

From an aesthetic POV. I have a metallic black jazz, with a chrome gotoh bridge, I'm ordering chrome schaller strap locks as we speak.

you think chrome machines heads or black?

I don't have pay pal, although I do want one. However I do have a chromatic pedal tuner and it doesn't take *that* long to tune haha. I wonder if 150+ is worth that effort.

If you've got chrome hardware already then to me, chrome machine heads would be the way to go. I wouldn't rule out the black heads, but I'd consider that to be an aesthetic preference whereas chrome would be like the default option.

funkyhoney 09-18-2009 09:53 AM

It's hard to imagine what it'll look like... Gotoh work out about $20 cheaper, but they also have either "bass or treble" side, I don't know what that means, I assume it means the top or bottom of the headstock. I may as well just get chrome schaller ones. They're in a 4inline package anyway.

FunkMetalBass 09-18-2009 09:53 AM

$174.84 AUD:

3 gotoh tuners + 1 hipshot shipped to Australia. (you can actually order through basspartsresource.com)
