That would be weird as hell...Loomis seems a lot more virtuoistic in his riffage, while Petrucci just shreds the crap out of his *** on his solos.
I guess it could sound weird, but it could also sound amazing.
Doesn't Petrucci do backing live? I thought I saw him do some...he was decent enough.
I know he didbacking vocals on the Number of the Beast cover, but Im not sure about their material. I never really payed attention to that.

He does backing vocals on "As I Am." On that 'I've been trying to justify you' part.

Is that the only song?

I don't know. Probably not. He probably does some on 'SFAM.'

Lord Abortion 03-07-2006 03:43 PM

He does Backing vocals along with Mike.

You can clearly see them both singing on the silent man on LSFNY.

temporary 03-07-2006 03:45 PM
Is that the only song?
He did backing for The Silent Man on Live Scenes From New York. I know he and Mike do backing on a bunch of other songs like Pull Me Under (in the studio it was just LaBrie overdubbed, I think, but live they do it) and The Glass Prison.

I still never got that :upset:

I always new Portnoy was the main guy for backing vocals, but I never thought John did any. I guess I was pretty wrong.

NP: Black Sabbath - War Pigs (1970 Basement Tape version)

Chu 03-07-2006 04:10 PM

He does back-ups in Budokan too.
Fairly high voice, reminds me of John Frusciante's (And I don't like that  ).

Must not have noticed I guess.

Jev 03-07-2006 04:12 PM

Backing vocals? yeah he does, they're just not as good as Mike's

Chu 03-07-2006 04:15 PM

I don't know how you can miss him

Still, his solo after In The Name of God more then makes up for his vocals imo :p

Jev 03-07-2006 04:16 PM

His vocals are decent. sure they leave a lot to be desired but he can sing.

Im just so caught up in the guitar and drums to notice the bcking vocals I guess.

Hello

classicrockman 03-07-2006 04:47 PM

Why do you guys dislike "Honor Thy Father" so much? I know, the lyrics are pretty gay...but the riffs are great. I don't know, I just always hear "Honor Thy Father" in all of that 'worse DT song' discussion.

I can think of worse...

I like it. Infact there arent many DT songs I dislike.

nowitzki 03-07-2006 04:49 PM

Its far from their worst, its just the rest of ToT is much better IMO. If it was on Falling Into Infinity people would rate it much higher, its just because its surrounded by better songs.

Thats probably the best reason why people don't like it.

Yep, that's what was exactly on my mind. Sure "Honor Thy Father" doesn't compete with "SoC" or "ItNoG," but I think it's better than some of the tracks on 'Falling Into Infinity.'

Sadly I dislike quite a few. The only DT albums I can really sit through are I&W, Awake and SFAM. There's a few other songs here and there but I'm liking DT less and less nowadays. :(

Tis ashame, but to each his own I guess. DT isnt for everyone just like any other band.

I agree.

nowitzki 03-07-2006 05:05 PM

With a band as varied as DT its no surprise some people wont like certain songs/albums.

ghettoeddo 03-07-2006 06:00 PM

best. show. ever.
they had some mix and technical problems especially with the videoscreens, but overall, it was awesome.
i can post the setlist if you guys want. i dont wanna ruin it for anyone. all ill say is that they included some nice little gems :] *coughpinkfloydmetallica* as well as playing a few songs i would not have expected them to bring out in north america of all places

oh and JR's got a white beard now :\ kinda weird. it really makes him show his age more, which was depressing.

ghettoeddo 03-07-2006 06:30 PM

1) the root of all evil
2) i walk beside you
3) another won
4) afterlife
5) TAKE THE TIME <--i creamed my pants. my current fave DT song :]
6) caught in a web. i wanted lie.
7) peruvian skies with pink floyd's wish you were here and metallica's wherever i may roam teasers in there
8) home
---intermission---
9) the glass prison
10) endless sacrifice with twinkle twinkle little star during JR's usual "weird" keyboard moment in the instrumental
11) never enough
12) sacrificed sons
13) octavarium. the video is psychotic.
---encore---
14) jordan rudess piano solo=beautiful
15) WAIT FOR SLEEP
16) learning to live w/ extended jams

im so glad it wasn't pull me under/metropolis. i think all in all, my setlist was awesome.

Nice. This makes me more anxious to see them.

nowitzki 03-07-2006 06:36 PM

Thats a great setlist, you were lucky to get Take the Time and Wait For Sleep, they haven't been playing them very often recently.

ghettoeddo 03-07-2006 06:37 PM

i know. i really dont like caught in a web that much. the mirror and lie have so much more emotion to me. LSOAD or scarred wouldn't have been bad as the awake pick either.

GenuineImitation 03-07-2006 06:40 PM

I wish they dont play Sacrificed Sons at the April 1st show. I like the song, but there are other songs I would much rather see them play.

nowitzki 03-07-2006 06:41 PM

They seem to play it at most shows this tour. I'm not a huge fan od it, it really seems to drag on.

GenuineImitation 03-07-2006 06:44 PM
They seem to play it at most shows this tour. I'm not a huge fan od it, it really seems to drag on.
Yeah. I wouldnt mind seeing it, but i would much rather see under a glassmoon, lie, metropolis part 1, strange deja vu...

Lord Abortion 03-07-2006 06:55 PM

Wait for sleep would have been wonderful.

smart blockhead 03-07-2006 07:02 PM

Guns don't kill people. Chuck Norris kills People.

There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of animals Chuck Norris allows to live.

Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.

The chief export of Chuck Norris is Pain.

There is no chin under Chuck Norris' Beard. There is only another fist.

nowitzki 03-07-2006 07:13 PM

Hacked?

ghettoeddo 03-07-2006 07:21 PM

cliché as those chuck norris jokes have become, i still like those :]

UAGM isn't so great live imo. there seems to be a missing dimension in the intro slide-octave riffs especially. it sounds empty.

sacrificed sons was actually pretty powerful live. but that's me being biased, cuz i like the song.

james hit that high note in learning to live DEAD on :] the man hasn't lost much of his voice, which made me glad to see

also, is it just me, or do european/SA/asian audiences get into DT more? the audience at my show wasn't very engaged, but i see budokan, 5YIALT, IW in tokyo and other bootlegs and the audience is always singing or clapping along.

Shattered_Future 03-07-2006 07:26 PM

Asian audiences get into EVERYTHING more. It's just the way they are...they're more metal centric then the US is.

ghettoeddo 03-07-2006 07:41 PM

i always thought so otherwise...

Chu 03-07-2006 10:33 PM

How good is Budoken when you see the ~800 or however many people there are headbanging :P
