Hey, Darkness, before this post, we had the exact same number of posts!

Man, we rock!

Killtacular 10-18-2005 07:36 PM

Whenever I introduce someone to Opeth, I give them Blackwater Park first. It's just such a great introductory album.

Magicaltroll 10-18-2005 07:36 PM
Still Life is just such a large ammount better than BP, it's sickening.
Maybe I need to listen to it more then...
That never was my favorite album.

I also didn't care much for My Arms, Your Hearst.

And the new album isn't doing much for me either. Everything else though, is great.

I bought Blackwater Park like 3 years after I was into Opeth. I am pretty in depth in the band. I never used to like it, but now I love it. It's a great album.

Yeah, I'm a prodigy.

I feel this way, as well.

MAYH is now one of my favorites, but it really had to work it's way up the ladder to get there. I didn't like it much for a while.

Yeah, that album is going to take me a while to really get into... When and Demon Of The Fall are still classics though.

Jude 10-18-2005 08:31 PM

Blackwater Park is, objectively speaking, as good as Still Life, but I just like Still Life a lot more.

Toaster 10-18-2005 08:47 PM
The 2nd solo? Yes, its "metal madness" like the reviewer on sputknick said. :D :thumb: Amazing song. Nothing beats the emotion that Mikeal has when he's screaming his ass off near the end with the 2 different vocals... its great.
Man, I really disagree with you there. Akerfeldt sounds wayy too much like Kirk Hammet there for my taste. The whole double-stop, wah solo with hammer-ons and the like, its not the style I usually love hearing from him.

True, though BWP is great. It's just the way SL works as a cohesive album that is why it beats out BWP, the concept is great

I hear no Hamment influence in that solo... Its not as fast as him, I don't hear ANY wah there, and just because he uses some hammer ons doesn't make him Kirk, everyone uses hammer ones. He uses them often to, see the Leper Affinity's solo.

I've listened to Deliverance (twice), MAYH, and Blackwater Park all today, the other day I listened to Orchid 3 times in a row and I've been listening to Damnation just about every night recently. Am i obsessed? I think I am. Who else is like this where they can't go a day without listening to Opeth.

Shadows 10-18-2005 08:55 PM

So far I'm liking every Opeth album, but Morningrise still hasn't clicked with me at all.

Not to badger you, and this isn't directed at you, but..

I really hate it when people think that "oh, you like BWP best, you're an Opeth n00b". No, I have every album, and I like BWP the best. The songwriting is Opeth's most unpredictable and interesting IMO, and the reccuring use of the E-bow is just awesome.

I can't go a day without at least one song, but I've been listening to lots of In Flames and Nevermore lately, so I've cut back on the Opeth a bit for now.

Whoa dude, I was just saying BWP is the best place to start, as it has everything Opeth can do, and you can pretty much pick where you want to go from there depending on which particular side of the band you want. I'm not saying liking BWP the most is bad. Its a great album, and I know lots of people that hold that as their highest.

Hm, give it time. Once you absorb every part of all the songs you'll get it. At first I had trouble with it too but now I'm in love with it

Nothing in particular. It's been a whil, so chances are if I listened to it again I'd like it more. But back in the day it was my absolute least favorite Opeth album. It just seemed so bland and boring musically.

Like I said, it's been a while. I'm sure if I pulled it out and listened some more I'd like it, just like I did with numerous other Opeth albums.

Killtacular 10-18-2005 09:41 PM

You'd better get to work on that, pronto!

matt4 10-19-2005 12:23 AM

I'm glad to see that more people than just myself love Deliverance. It was my first Opeth album and I fell in love with the band because of it, so maybe I'm a little partial. But I own every Opeth album now and am absolutely ADDICTED to them!!! I can't even begin to explain how obsessed I have become with this band. But I think it's interesting that you guys like Wreath so much. I bought the album and thought "wow, I wasted $20 on this CD". Then I heard Deliverance and thought "this is song is pretty good"....then the outro hit, I creamed my pants and the rest is history!
Now that so much time has passed since then (I forget how many years; Deliverance was new at the time), I still listen to the album and wonder why it catches so much crap. I mean, it is different from previous Opeth stuff, but the only Opeth album that isn't super-different from all its predecessors is Morningrise (and only Orchid had come before it....and Morningrise was still different!). Wreath, to me, is Opeth's worst song (well, it's close between it and Harlequin Forest). I just don't like it; it loses it's momentum and never convincingly regains it! However, I absolutely LOVE By The Pain I See In Others, and I have heard a lot of ppl say that they really hate that one :P

Anyway, on to what started this incredibly LONG post: I was listening to Deliverance the other day and reading the lyrics along with the album and noticed how friggin' awesome the lyrics to the song "Deliverance" are! Everyone here always says how awesome Mikael is as a lyricist, but we never talk about the lyrics! (I say "we", I just sort of lurk in this thread) What lyrics do you guys like so much? My favorites are "Deliverance" and "Face of Melinda".

That's crazy. BWP didn't really depart too heavily from Still life's sound. It borrows a lot of the same guitar patterns. Better because you like it more? BWP is probably Opeth's most cohesive work (dirge for november aside). But it's funny you know at the moment Still Life is the album I can't connect with. I'll probably change my mind in a month.

how can anyone not listen to 9.00 onward in 'the leper affinity' and say it's not tighter than a jock strap. (the heavy part before the piano)

DuncMaster 10-19-2005 05:16 AM

So I just bought Still Life... 40 seconds into Godhead's Lament... so far so good. :p

Deth 10-19-2005 05:57 AM

Yeah, Godhead's Lament is one of my favorite songs ever.

epihasi 10-19-2005 06:02 AM

Godhead's lament has the most beautiful acoustic part in it. I know this has been said here a lot, but that part is worth another mention. Although the Moor's acoustic part is close behind, if not even as beautiful as GL.

The lyrics to Deliverence(I'm talking about the song) are incredible. I'll keep my interpretation short.

By drowning someone (and thereby "delivering" them to the other world), the narrator ironically seals his own fate. As a result of this action he is doomed to forever be in the company of the devil, to be forever consumed by his own sin. Just as he once delivered he is now finds himself "delivered"--by his own hand no less.

Hence....

"Deliverence.....Thrown back at me
Deliverence......Laughing at me"

Don't forget about the sexy groove that goes along with those lyrics either;)

I might give my explanation more detail if people are actually interested in discussing lyrics--its a shame what happened to the poetry speaks thread featuring Opeth.

Ahh, I am a lurker also,

anywayz, Heres my story about how i got into opeth...okay...now listen. LISTEN!!!

okay here we go. I was looking for songs to add to my music codes website. so i was just looking through the letters A all the way to Z. Than i just tried opeth out and downloaded harvest.
I didnt really think too much of it, in fact. I found to be quite boring. But after that, i downloaded Black Rose Immortal and was blown away. I wanted to put it on my website, but Lowering the bitrate would still make the file still too big.

So now, ive been hooked to all opeth songs except Godheads Lament. I cant seem to get into that song.
Ive bought 4 CDs by them already, Still Life, Deliverance and Ghost Reveries.
what do you say...thats three?
okay, i get drunk, lose my discman with ghost reveries in it the 2nd day i had it.
than i go buy another Ghost Reveries CD. Did anyone actually read this?

Also, does anyone listen to the mahavishnu Orchestra? I like the songs alot.

The coolest thing about the album Deliverance to me, is a few if the verses from The Master's Apprentices just vocals played backwards on the end of By The Pain I See In Others. Because I love that line in the song, and never knew what it was until I played it backwards the other day. It was cool.

YOU'RE crazy. Sure, it borrows from the sound, but it's not anywhere near as good. The Funeral Portrait lacks heavily, and Dirge for November was a little under par as well.

I like the Funeral Portrait. But you're right, Dirge for November drags a lot. The acoustic stuff at the beginning is really nice though.

Darkness 10-19-2005 09:32 PM

I really like most of the parts in that song, but I find the structure of it lacks... the way it just kinda stops, goes heavy, stops, goes soft. Theres no build up or anything. But the acoustic parts are really nice/emotional, and the heavy part has that awesome lead. :D Funeral Portrait has a rocking groove to it to.

Toaster 10-19-2005 09:37 PM

I looove the Funeral Portrait. The growling on that song just kills me. After the "round the nucleus of joy" part, the scream is so demonic, it gives me goosebumps.

Incidentally, I dislike the intro to Dirge. His voice is really off-key and weak sounding.

VERY cool interpretation. I love that part you quoted...it's just so haunting and eerie before blasting into the final climactic part.
