Not saying you HAVE to know theory to write good music but it certainly can do nothing but help.

when you improvise, you're almost certainly using some scale

learning theory will help you expand the variety of what you play

I never said music that was written by people that don't have a foundation in theory isn't good.
I'm just saying that having a base in theory will allow you to experiment more and create better, lasting and more impressive music.
