I'd probably do service to keep aussie citizenship (if I were an aussie)

yeah, there's no compulsory service for australia though, and it would never be passed if someone tried to get it.

i want to keep my turkish citizenship though, so i do want to go do military service, although they're reforming it somewhat due to EU expectations, so i'm unsure what i'll have to do. it won't be for another few years until I've finished studying anyway.

that's the thing, because there is huge pressure to change it I'm not sure how long I'd have to serve. Originally, it was a minimum of 18 months or something, my dad did that and then stayed on for longer, but recently there's been this thing where you can pay a certain sum and do less, but I dunno how it works. I think I'd like to do a full service though, it'd give me some backbone because, as my parents ahve explained to me, i'll get my arse kicked on a daily basis.

We just do 10-12 months, but that's long enough for me. :p

I'm sure after you're done with it you'll be glad you went though.

in Norway you don't actually have to serve. if you say you don't want to, they don't want you.

you get community service if you're not fit to serve.

yes it is. they have plenty of people who want to be in the army, so if you express no interest in it - or are opposed to it - you will not be drafted.
