AG, what phone is that, specifically?

I've never had a prblem with sliders tbh,I think they're pretty cool.

My upgrade's happening soon (i'm eligible)but I have to wait for the phone I want to get in the stores. It's an LG GT405, kinda like an updated viewty apparently. Doesn't have GPS or Wifi, but it seems o.k, especially considering I can't spend a huge amount on a phone.

In the 3 store I nearly got an HTC hero on a cheap contract because I pointed out an error in their advertising...damn!

PS Iphones look like balls. HTC's where it's at \m/

AG 04-17-2010 05:30 AM

HTC are the best. I REALLY WANT AN HERO.

glock.jpg

Anywhos. I'll try and find out what sorta LG it is. It's new, and crap.

Blue_Moon 04-17-2010 06:18 AM

i enjoy my nokia 5730

JCBitB 04-17-2010 10:34 AM

I have an Iphone, and I think the strength is more in the apps than the horsepower. Lots of the newer phones seem to be more powerful, but I've got chord and arpeggio libraries, games to improve my sight reading, and other things I'd hate to lose.

Oh, and it's best if you jailbreak it. You can make it a mobile wireless hotspot, you can get turn by turn directions, you can multi task between apps and leave music players running in the background, all sorts of stuff

The_Mop 04-17-2010 10:42 AM

So basically, the iphones only worth it if you jailbreak it, allowing numerous security flaws and enabling it to do absolutely everything that any other android phone could do anyway....

...Yeah. Awesome.

JoshIsNumber3 04-17-2010 11:25 AM

Too bad the Android will never have an install base half as large as the iPhone, will never have the amount of developers working on it to make it better, and will ultimately fade into obscurity.

JCBitB 04-17-2010 11:32 AM

I'm not familiar with the apps available for android, but I'd say that's where it comes down to. Jailbreaking does open up the security of the phone, but the only exploit I've heard of affected the retarded kids who left their root password stock.

If you aren't pirating 0day apps that you can only find on one site on the whole internet, you'll be fine. Common sense goes a loooong way.

Well, that entirely depends if Apple keep alienating their developers with the increasingly tightened restrictions on the app store, and within their hardware... It is however true that the iphone will have a larger install base, sadly because idiots will keep buying whatever piece of crap Apple piss out next.

Like the iPad. Seriously, Apple?

That said, I am quite pleased with the release of the iPad, mainly so that by reopening the market for tablet PCs, someone can come along and do it better.

The_Mop 04-17-2010 01:11 PM

Yer, I was about to upgrade to that phone. I decided that I'd wait for a new LG thing to come out. basically has the same features as our phone except it's a touchscreen thingymabob with a better camera. No wifi or GPs sadly :(

Well I have a DiMarzio Tone Zone, Super Distortion, and Norton (in bridge positions which is where I assume your replacement will go). If you like the more classic style crunch I think the Norton is pretty good. It deals with gain really well, though I don't down-tune and all that jazz so I don't know about that if that is what you're after.

The biggest difference I hear is when palm muting, or any type of muting really. The Tone Zone has more of a thrashy quality to it, the Super Distortion is kind of old Metal chug chug with depth, and the Norton is kind of classic rocky crunch crunch.

With that said I find the Super Distortion kind of dull. I actually tried out an guitar with a DiMarzio D-Activator the other day. It was similar to the Super Distortion in how it handled gain; good. Though the D-Activator was really trebly to me. I was playing on a Mesa/Boogie Express 2:25 1x10 in the store. Though it has more of a thrashy type palm muted sound like the Tone Zone but the over all gain sound similar to the Super Distortion. Which I have recently found to be a rather decent lead pickup.

My favorite bridge is the DiMarzio Tone Zone. I'm not keen on ceramic magnets. I like my Alnico 5. Even if the TZ doesn't have output out the rear, it is a great over all pickup. If you like a thrashy kind of palm mute/string mute/etc. then I'd say definitely look into the TZ.

If you might want a little hotter sounding pickup than the TZ the Seymour Duncan JB has a thrashy quality to it as well. The question is are you a DiMarzio guy, Seymour Duncan guy, or another company like EMG ore Bare Knuckles.

JoshIsNumber3 04-17-2010 02:24 PM

Wow that's interesting do go on

Good call. This is a hunka junk.

I've considered going back to my P1i loads of times. Sell this pos to mazuma.

The_Mop 04-17-2010 03:10 PM

Thing is, feature-wise, they're pretty much the same phone (difference in UI, camera and touchscreen ). I could get an HTC hero for 20 quid a month as well, but that'd be on a 24 month contract and I can't be arsed with that.

Honestly mate, I would just stay away from LG. Like I said - 20 seconds just to open my messages, with nothing running in the background.

Pic unrelated, but it's my 80% finished crossbow.

When apple release crap the fanboys redefine what is considered good

eg "Apple are going to keep a whitelist of apps with ridiculous rules for membership (including not allowing SWEARS)"

becomes

not like all those phone viruses everyone has huh

Seeing we are still on the topic of phones. I got the iPhone 3GS 16Gb today, the only thing stopping me from returning it for a Blackberry BOLD 9700 is the $35 restocking fee. The GPS on this thing doesn't work in-doors, thankfully works in my car, which kind of scares me. I mean, if it can't work in-doors when there is a clear sky outside can it work if it was cloudy outside?

Irony is I pretty much found out ways around almost every complaint I've heard about the phone or found out that people are just stupid. It has some multi-tasking, but not much. Of course why would I want to listen to music while taking a phone call? I can listen to music and play solitaire, which tells me it depends on the application.

Found out how to create my own ringtones using iTunes. Which saves me money from what the guy at the store told me; that you had to buy them. I use my GPS a lot, and FFS if I buy a $200 phone with GPS I don't want outdoor-GPS; I want GPS!
I mean, if it can't work in-doors when there is a clear sky outside can it work if it was cloudy outside?
 Those clouds, always absorbing radio waves, the bastards

What kind of building were you in? It's quite possible that it was to do with the building itself (could have been made of concrete on a metal grid frame, which can sometimes absorb the signals)

Left Face Down 04-18-2010 06:27 AM

Just my house, made of wood with like plastic siding or w/e they use. Nothing fancy, no metal roof or anything like that. Hell, I went outside on my covered porch, no walls just a roof that is around 1 1/2 feet thick, and it said I was a mile away from my house. Tried for 5 minutes, the location changed a few times but still put me 1-2 miles away from my house. Walked about 5 feet (I was near the center of the porch sitting at the table we have) so I was just off the edge, no more than a foot off the porch. It finds my location correctly in like 3 seconds.

Hell, I've used my Blackberry's GPS in CEBA on LSU's campus. The thing is 3 floors tall, concrete, built nice and tank like. On the first floor, second floor, and third floor. My gripe is my Blackberry could do it in my house, exactly where I am sitting now. Yet the iPhone, both my 3GS and my mother's 3G, can't. I'm sitting 4 feet away from an open Window in my room and the iPhone can't even find me here? really?

I blame the guitar application that was on the AT&T show floor iPhone. It sucked me in, but I'm too cheap to buy it for $10. I figured it would be like $5. This is what I get for getting something that is fancy. Just should have got the Blackberry to begin with, saved $50 because it comes with a leather holster w/ belt clip (granted the Otterbox Defender series protects the iPhone like a champ and looks good while doing it), and just said so what if the Blackberry doesn't have the best web browser. Granted since I last looked at Opera Mini it has been upgraded a lot. It wasn't that great when I tried it a couple of years ago on my BB 8310.

Bruce E Kinesis 04-18-2010 06:30 AM

Opera mini runs on my shitty gprs nokia and is plenty good enough for the 3 times a year i actually use the internet on my phone

Left Face Down 04-18-2010 06:42 AM

I also like how the iPhone can't play half the videos on youtube that I want to watch. It sounds dumb, but the GPS thing really gets me. That I can't use songs on the iphone as ringtones, that the camera takes two years to load, and another few things are minor complaints. The GPS not working 1/4th as well as the one on my Blackberry that I bought for $50 two years ago, an issue with hardware more than software probably, is a big thing to me.

Exactly. 'Not like those other companies' doesn't stand in this example, as there isn't really any other technology company aimed at the home user that so blatently and inexcusably puts restrictions on what you can do with their tech, to the point of alienating developers and arbitrarily disallowing compatability with certain programs/scripts/plugins/devtools/connectivity e.t.c..... the list goes on.

dang thnx for the detailed response you are too kind hehe,

i have only played stock pickups in a 6 string so idk what kind of tone i want, i like bands like sea, periphery, and emarosa, so imma probably just get the tone zone if you dig it for those kinds of sounds

i like a big midrange chug i guess

Plankis 04-18-2010 11:47 AM

The tonezone is really good, I've owned it for several years but it had a weird midrange that I never liked. So I bought some Nailbombs from bkp. It's quite similar but has a nicer, highend imo. But it really comes down to taste. The best is definitely to test them, but it also takes a while finding the sweetspot. So a quick jam with them never shows their true potential.

I did a shootout, you can hear the difference between a Dimarzio breed in neck position and tonezone in bridge position versus calibrated Nailbombs here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/933491/Dimarzio%20VS.%20Bareknuckle.rar
Do notice that I tweaked the patches for the Dimarzios. And that I now have adjusted the Nailbombs to a less extreme position then I had when I recorded it.

But if you want Blub-tone he uses Cold sweats from Bareknuckle if I remember correctly.
