Zmev 04-22-2007 12:37 AM

Clean up the stupid beach tomorrow, yay.

bleep_bloop 04-22-2007 01:43 AM

fuck, im watching Earth 2100 on the discovery channel, and it's really depressing me, because it's talking about how as the temperatures increase the food production will go down in tropical and subtropical areas and said areas will dry out and become deserts.

it seems like all non-fiction shows on tv recently have all been really depressing/about really depressing things.

sgrevs 04-22-2007 05:48 AM

live life to the fullest and you won't feel so bad.

today i:
1. went out with friends for breakfast
2. bought a cd (Swing Sensations - Various Artists..$2 - bargain of the century!)
3. Watched the film Adaptation (with Nicholas Cage) with some friends - great movie
4. Went to some Jewsih ceremony to honour all the fallen Israeli soldiers throughout Israel's history (Yom Hazikaron anyone?) but it kinda sucked and was far away.

what a day.

Boilermaker 04-22-2007 06:55 AM

My friend told me to go out and buy a CD for him, and I'm really hoping he's gonna pay me back.

Neoteric 04-22-2007 07:40 AM

You should have got the money from him before buying it.

sweboy 04-22-2007 08:24 AM

Anyone know what those things that you plug your guitar into and lets you record a few bars and then it loops it, so that you can play over it, are called?

my friend has one he just calls it a loop pedal. it is mad fun to play with...

he uses it at shows and it works out nicely i dont know how much they cost

Idk which is better, but they're pretty cool for live things.

Some people use it like this:

I've never seen someone use a loop pedal effectively in a live performance. Usually it just sounds terrible, because, well, it's a loop. Nobody likes to listen to the exact same thing over and over and over. I would rather an artist sacrifice the "live" element and play with a recording that isn't made of loops, but is performed the whole way through.

perriwinkle 04-22-2007 12:20 PM

i have. it can be done very well. the loops dont have to be like half a second over and over. he makes these soundscapes, adding a layer every time

Thanks 04-22-2007 12:21 PM

Annoying.

perriwinkle 04-22-2007 12:24 PM

why are you being a butt you do not even know what you are talking about

Thanks 04-22-2007 12:27 PM

I know plenty what I'm talking about. A lot of people get into the concept of the loop pedal because they think it gives them freedom to play more parts by themselves, but what it really does is work them into an uncreative and amusical corner. It's a crutch, and not even a sturdy one. Things like frippertronics are cool because the tape loops have a natural decay that keeps things changing with subtlety. The use of digital technology to hammer something till the cows come home, however, even if you're "adding layers" is nothing more than obnoxious and gimmicky.

ATM 04-22-2007 12:29 PM

Battles do it well :-x

the RC20XL by Boss is awesome, expensive though

Geography 04-22-2007 12:33 PM

battles have grown on me some i love the rhythms

perriwinkle 04-22-2007 12:36 PM

how can it possibly be uncreative? the loop sampler gives you the opportunity to repeat any sound, over any sound. YOU CAN USE IT ANY WAY YOU WANT! if you have not ever seen it done well then im sorry that you have never seen it done well. and i think youre getting the wrong impression about these soundscapes. its not like these things will repeat for seven minutes and become cluttered noise repeating over and over. for example, this is a good use for the sampler. he plays with his laptop, because a lot of the rhythm is done electronically, so when a certain part comes in, he can play a chord progression, loop it, then play another part or a solo over it, then when the part is over, loop stops. nothing obnoxious, nothing gimmicky. its just incredibly convenient for a solo artist

Kayetan 04-22-2007 12:38 PM

lol, don't worry about it, perriwinkle.

ATM 04-22-2007 12:38 PM

Man, when I saw Robert Fripp he couldnt have been more annoying with the loops.

perriwinkle 04-22-2007 12:40 PM

We're talking about the use of the pedal, not the use of loops in computer music. Computer music is a completely different beast. Looping using the pedal is uncreative because it encourages a lack of variation by necessity, and it lends itself most readily to very bland formal structures. You have this concept of "composition by looping something and adding more looping layers every 8 bars until the song is over," as well as the form of "have some vamp that goes on while I twiddle over it and occasionally add something new to the vamp." Music this way is just gross.

Thanks 04-22-2007 12:49 PM

Also, Perriwinkle is a big poop head wiener breath idiotface.
