what do you think of travis barker as a drummer, spence?
He is a respectable drummer, but there are by far better drummers out there.

HitHardDrums55 01-21-2006 08:56 AM

^good answer.

Well, here's the article about the end of The Transplants. (If anyone cares)
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/the_transplants_break_up.html

Independent_CA 01-21-2006 12:59 PM

Actually, you said "Transplants" and I stopped caring, sorry.

Ross 01-21-2006 05:15 PM

I actually quite liked the transplants first album. Never heard the second.

Expensive Taste(s)... (another new band for Travis, for those who didn't read the above article) Hmm... Probably won't be that interesting, but I might grab a couple of tracks if/when they release anything. With a rapper frontman I don't expect it to be my cup of tea.

B 01-21-2006 05:33 PM

At least Travis is versatile.

You have to give him that.

That is why he is a respectable drummer that can play many different styles of music.

HitHardDrums55 01-21-2006 07:19 PM

i can play more styles than i've heard travis play and i've only been playing 4 years while he's been playing since he was 4

lets see...he can definately play rock we learned that with blink182 and boxcar racer, with the aquabats he basically played rock beats...but hell we'll throw ska in there cause i have to admit he did have some ska beats...so 2...and with the transplants we learned he can play funk...which is the same stuff he plays with any rapper he plays with, and knowing he took lessons from a jazz drummer i'm just assuming he can play jazz

me: i can play rock, jazz, funk, and ska...i can also play latin and middle-eastern grooves and fusion pretty much anything you can name that doesn't involve double bass

and im not saying im better than travis, that would be kind of rediculous since hes what 30 now? so thats 26 years of playing drums, of course he's better than me...but i cant honestly say i've ever heard him play any fusion grooves or anything

Ross 01-21-2006 07:40 PM

Given chance, I'm sure he can.

But hell, I'm no drummer so I can't really comment.

chumpradio 01-21-2006 07:50 PM

I don't really see how that's a valid point. Just because you haven't heard him play more styles, doesn't mean he can't.
Like I play bass in my band. I tend to do basic pop punk stuff with some relatively hard and complex fills/solos. Just because I don't play any funk or blues in my music doesn't mean that I can't play them.

DJ Ducksauce 01-21-2006 08:29 PM

I downloaded the Transplant's S/T not too long ago. Haven't heard it yet, think I'm about to maybe.

I think I might pick up a drum kit some time and start learning. After I get a bass. Then I could play whatever in a band. I'd have to pick up quite a bit of cash though before that. :p

HitHardDrums55 01-21-2006 08:51 PM

just the fact that he's played with so many different musicians, and i've heard majority of the stuff he's played in...and that one guy said he can play a lot of different styles...im just saying what people have heard him play isnt that many theres tons of different stuff out there...but i will admit he does more than most drummers who get big and stick to one band and they break up and you never hear from him again

FauxApathy 01-21-2006 09:14 PM

I think it'd be hilarious if Expensive Tastes became really popular. Just blew up kind of like Eminem did when He first released a couple singles. Or Green Day during American Idiot.

And then of course everyone who liked the Transplants would be pissed and start whining about how they were better.

About Travis' drumming, you can't play an instrument for over twenty years and be just a mediocre drummer.
For example...Mark has probably been playing bass for about twenty years, but have you ever heard him pop/slap in a song? None that I'm aware of. Yet, he probably still can. In fact, he's probably pretty good at it.

HitHardDrums55 01-21-2006 09:27 PM

i've already stated the fact that i've heard mark slap i think...but i have heard him slap for sure and it was good...i've seen a LOT of solo footage of travis and it's ALWAYS funk and i've read a ton of interviews and he talks about his influences a lot and not once have i heard him mention anything other than rock and funk and occasionally jazz with his drum teacher when he was a kid...you'd think out of the about 10-15 drum magazines i have featuring barker, and the tons of videos i've seen of him and having heard most of his songs that he'd do something of all the styles he knows...but he hasnt if he does know all those styles

he used to be my favorite drummer until i discovered bands i like more than blink182

and yes it is possible to play something for over 20 years and still just be mediocre...it's called a skill plateau. you don't get any better, don't get any worse..just stay the same...sure you can write new stuff, but still it doesnt always expand your skill level...i think thats what he did when he left the aquabats for blink

yourstruly 01-21-2006 09:29 PM

I've seen and heard Mark slap. But why would anyone slap in a pop-punk song. That would be retarded.

plaidbassbilly 01-21-2006 11:28 PM

His style suits the type of music they play. Why complicate it when it sounds great how it is? That's what I reckon anyway.

HitHardDrums55 01-21-2006 11:47 PM

you can slap in pop-punk, but i'll agree slapping doesn't suit blink182

but travis on the other hand, has played with more than just pop punk and therefore has a right to play fusion and latin and all kinds of crazy grooves, but he doesnt.

You do relise he can probably play those styles but hasnt joined a band of those styles duuh. It's not like blink are gunna have a latin break down in a song or something.

yourstruly 01-22-2006 02:59 AM

yeah I agree with 10571z.

you're right, blink wouldn't do that.
but the aquabats would have done something like that.
the transplants had a few latin-ish rythms, but he still played a rock/funk beat

Get Fighted 01-22-2006 08:10 AM

AVA IS OUT IN MAY? FUCK! Ah well im seeing them in April so its not all doom and gloom.

I think the most complicated bass riff that Mark did with blink is in Mutt.

Carousel....

Marlboro man...

Both more complex then mutt.

It says "Summer of 2006" on their myspace. Cant wait.
Carousel....

As in Carousel, it is rather quite easier than Mutt. Mutt has hammer ons and pulloffs, which is quite rare for Mark during that era.

thisisntmysn122 01-22-2006 07:25 PM

hey...i want angels and airwaves to release a song already..its been too long a wait..but i guess its worth it... i started a blog and the first few posts are gonna be about angels and airwaves and plus 44 once i get things rolling...check it out...matts-music.blogspot.com
It says "Summer of 2006" on their myspace. Cant wait.
oh.........well have they released any songs since "no it isn't" because a second ago I searched for Plus 44 songs on kazaa and 3 other songs besides "no it isnt" came up. ("crappy love ballad", "everything's alright", and "get the girl")

P.S. I know "get the girl" was the name of Carol Heller's old band

yourstruly 01-23-2006 03:37 AM

None of those will be Plus 44 songs.

10571z 01-23-2006 05:41 AM

crappy love ballad isnt its some gay band

plaidbassbilly 01-23-2006 08:01 AM

Yeah I remember a while ago some people got confused over 'Crappy Love Ballad.'

Is that song "Demise" actually by Angels And Airwaves?

Agent_Orange 01-23-2006 10:19 AM

I thought so but now i'm unsure.

10571z 01-23-2006 03:34 PM

i doubt it
