Makes sense, but I somewhat disagree. I love Adam's playing and to whoever said he was less creative than Page: you're a complete fool.

Of course, Adam works on more levels than just his guitar playing, but people seem to knock the latter just because it isn't as complex as the actual songs are, or as complex/challengning as the drum parts. Tool comes together in complex ways and make original music. The technicality of the guitar parts has no bearing on how the music really is.

Besides, Adam's sound is somewhat sloppy (as with most Rock guitarists), but it really gives it a good feel. His playing is original and has a lot of feel to it among the imperfection.

Just to elaborate a bit, I was referring that a gutarist who fits in with the band and can sink into the background/join in and harmonise well with a band is better than one who constantly needs to be in the foreground. Hence why I like his style.

His solos seamlessly fit in with any song, and its hard to point out 'the solo part' in most songs, unlike with most guitarists who need the ful attention when soloing.

And I put Paige not knowing the real spelling for sure, I thought it was Page but I was commenting in response to the person saying Page was better and if you check back I believe he spelt it Paige. I thought 'well I won't doubt him due to him actually being a fan" I forgot that fans can still be quite ignorant of their supposed heroes.

Then we're saying the same thing ;) You just said it more clearly and concisely than I did. That is a good observation, it's hard to point out the 'solo parts' because they're basically just parts of the song that happen to be solos, if that makes any sense.

He's still one of my favorite guitarists. The solo part of Reflection (one of the easier ones to pick out) near the end is one of my favorite guitar solos ever, especially when it's done and he goes to the normal riff and the rest of the band crashes in. *Eargasm*

There are parts where he stands out (like the Reflection part I just talked about), but in a good way. Other times he just blends into the song.

See, Adam is more of a composition genius than a guitarist. He knows what chords can go into what chords and what key changes to switch to create a mood.

Thats why I can understand him not going to the next round. His genius doesn't lie in his guitarplaying it lies in his mind/songwriting/composing.

I've been voting in those polls not only on guitar skill, because that'd be unfair. I don't know who is technicaly better because I don't play guitar or don't know the theory behind it. I was trying to vote Adam through because I think he's a original, and a real cool person. Same for Schuldiner. I was really rootin' for those guys.

Well my point was that he would probably go farther in a composition contest.

And is it just me or is a trend to say "All John Petrucci does is shred, he's got no soul". Sure he might have a couple solos that are a bit wanky but I find alot of emotion and GODLY composition in most of his solos, not to mention in all of Dream Theater. I mean composition on the scales of Mozart and Haydn, not Beethoven or Chopin genius by anymeans, but still godly IMO.

I agree. While I'm not a very big DT fan (the keyboards plus Labrie's vocals really turn me off), Petrucci puts his heart and soul into his playing, even if it does transcend wank at times.

exactly, people seem to think that doing things fast makes you good. but in reality it's all in how you put it together. 46 & 2 for example, it's basically one riff. but he uses that "geniusness" (if thats a word) to make each repitition something new and even more amazing than the previous

Not exactly what I was trying to say. You have a point but, doing things fast does make you a skilled guitarist, maybe not a skilled composer, but a skilled guitarist.

Adam Jones the composer > Adam Jones the guitarist

I think what it is, it's becoming popular to contradict anything that remotely starts to be the majority opinion of certain people.
