im writing some things for the vocalist comp. what do you guys think of my first one?

Jeff Buckley’s career was cut much too short. Only releasing a single official studio album, various live albums, and albums comprised of unreleased material, the public only got a taste of his potential. Said potential, however, was much more than anyone could have anticipated. His album, Grace, is 51 minutes of some of the best vocals ever recorded in rock. Though every track is tremendous in its own way, there are several stand outs. His cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” is a masterpiece. Buckley’s soaring vocals convey the intense emotions while at the same time highlighting his excellent vocal control and range. “So Real,” showcases the tremendous ability that he possessed. The title track is the real show-stopper, though. “Grace,” features Buckley’s best vocals, flowing, emoting, flying high over the listener, fixing one in one’s steps. Apart from Grace, Jeff has several unreleased tracks that cement his place atop the mountain of rock vocalists. His rendition of the opera song, “Dido’s Lament,” is a testament to his versatility and the strength in his voice. The songs listed below are some of his best, but personally, I would recommend buying Grace and if you like what you hear, progress from there.

Recommended Listening:
Grace
Hallelujah
So Real
Dido’s Lament
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over
Eternal Life (Road Version)
I think its good, Buckley is so awesome. Its such a massive shame he had to die...

Jeff Buckley seems to be the type that ill-spirited people would accuse of beeing a whiney pretty boy singer, I wonder why I'v never heard this in such a cruel and unforgiving world like MX

I'm really diggin the song "Shady Grove" by QMS- It gets better with every listen. The part in the middle sounds like an "A Day In The Life"-esque chant, and the sound is so incredibly full and rich, and the vocals are so good, like Jim Morrison almost
I wonder what it would have sounded like if it was recorded with better equipment, I can't quite make out the vocals near the end before "it's easy to know who you are when you're living in the trees"
I might make up some and try to mesh the lyrics with the chords to the Jerry Garcia/ David Grisman version

Hey, am I the only one on here who has off today? Its election day, and my school is a polling place.

I'm off. But not because of Election Day. We always have Superintendent's Day on Election Day so we get off for that. I get Friday off too, and get out a half hour early on Thursday:cool:

Np: Masters of War - Bob Dylan

PinkFreud 11-08-2005 12:08 PM
He's not as liked in Alt/Indie as people would think, but mainly it's because he was so outstanding within his genre. I'd honestly say that he's kind of like Bob Dylan in that respect, even though obviously their achievements aren't comparable. Both made music that was a pinnacle within the genre. In Buckley's case it was only one album, although his live stuff is really great as well. Good writeups too...does everyone on the list need one? I might do some if they do.
yeah, all 100 need them.

thanks, guys. i find it odd that buckley smoked because he wanted to lower his voice.

What kind of crap is a Superintendents day? Don't they just sit on their asses and eat donuts all day?

NP:The Inner Light

I didn't know Buckley smoked to lower his voice
Maybe he should have known that there is a gas that works as the opposite of Helium-- as helium is so light it moves out of your vocal chords faster, and I guess there is a non-toxic gas that is heavier than air that makes your voice lower by rising slower-- I wish I remembered the name

PinkFreud 11-08-2005 01:44 PM

maybe YOU shouldve known that there is a gas like that.

i dont know. i really like his voice, i dont care if it was high. doesnt make him any less amazing.

I heart you as a supermod. I don't know why they didn't do it earlier.

Anyway, on the topic of Buckley, "Lover, You Should Have Come Over" is a really good song. I didn't know Jamie Cullum covered it.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-08-2005 06:50 PM

I haven't heard Grace yet....:-/

Since (apparently) dealers don't like to sell tiny strips to skinny white stoners we have decided to save for up for an entire sheet of LSD. Since they're 50 strips (I think) on an entire sheet we're probablly going to have to sell them for 5-10$ a strip or.....we could split 50 strips 50/50 and just take acid every (other) week for a few months. We've already got 47$. :D

Illmatic 11-08-2005 07:03 PM

Grace was pretty "meh" to me...his cover of "Hallelujah" is a fantastic song, but I can't get into the rest of the album.

Jacaranda 11-08-2005 07:09 PM

It took me a few listens to really start to like it, I love "Mojo Pin" and "Eternal Life" and obviously "Hallelujah", I don't know anyone who hates that song, I think its impossible.
