So, I decided I'm going to do a cover of the Gaping Lotus Expirience.

I'm recording my drum solo for the MXDP sometime within the next few days. I'm using the above thing as the basis for it. It's Ticks and Leeches influenced.
I'm assuming Adam did both, but I know nothing about that stuff.
If i remember correctly it was King Buzzo of the Melvins who played a second guitar for that one

Hehe. Thanks a lot man.

The bad news:I started downloading it, and it got to 75%, and then all the sudden. ERROR!!!

The good news: I just clicked on the link again, and it the download picked up where it left off. Lucky me.
Couldn't agree less.

Maynard's vocals sound like crap at times in the song. The original has this aura to it that creates the mystical atmosphere. The Tool version tries to turn it into a very heavy song but it isnt supposed to be. The original has a piano solo to it! It's a mellow song that's very layered musically. There's nothing of the sorts in the Tool version.
That's funny..the way you described the original is how I would have described the Tool version. Mystical atmosphere, very Layered. And its basically mellow by Tool standards up until the end jam. No camparision between the Tool and original version. Tool wins hands down IMHO.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-24-2005 11:15 PM

Patient-You somehow ZIP'd LAMC and Maynard's Dick together. It's all one song. wtf?

123, I'll admit that Led Zeppelin is an amazing band, but no quarter is probably my least favorite song of theirs in terms of performance. It sounds to me that whoever produced this track weighted Plants voice too heavily against the instruments in order to make up for his weak voice on this song. Page's solo is probably the only thing that Zeppelin did a better job on(the solo in the tool version is much much much easier, but still drives the point home just as effectively), but the song pacing sounds almost nervous, i like the way tool slowed it down just a bit.

As many of you know I have put together a band with some of the best musicians I could find. It is coincidence that we are all huge Tool fans and what I would call, "Thinkers". On the topic of Maynards voice, today I was working on some of the stuff we had worked on in practice and we had played a few Tool songs in practice to kind of warm up and get into our mindsets. I was listening to them as a co-worker walked by and he mentioned about how much he loved Tool.

So, I say, "Thats not Tool." and told him that it was the new band that I formed. He couldn't believe it. I had known that when I first auditioned this guy for my band I was forming that he was good, and at the time I couldn't believe what an amazing singer he was, and how many Maynard esque qualities he had. As I re-played the tapes and listened to the similarities I kind of shocked myself when I realized that he did sound, and more importantly, sing the Tool covers as Maynard does. It kinda freaked me out.

I am in the act of creating a web site for the new band and this thursday we are planning to spend some time and record these covers, as well as a few of the originials we have already wrote, to put them on our site. I think you will all be amazed at how much this guy sounds like Maynard.

I am sooooo excited about this. I have been putting all my effort into this project which is why I havent been on MX as much as I used to. I have one more month of working a hectic schedule and then my time will free up some and I'll be posting in here much more. I'll post up a link to the web site with the Tool covers hopefully within this week.

Vandle 04-25-2005 03:05 AM

Awesome Ken, Can't wait.

Spiritofmosa 04-25-2005 03:25 AM

hmm is maynard in two different bands?

Vandle 04-25-2005 05:05 AM

Yes...well was..not sure Whats happening with "A Perfect Circle" now though. Heard it was a 3 Album contract/deal thing...then again cant believe everything you read.

SonorKen 04-25-2005 06:00 AM

I believe they fulfilled thier 3 record contract with Emotive.

Legendary. As much as I love covers, I'm anxious to hear your original material, you sound very excited about it!

I'm listening to You Lied (the cover from Salival right now)... there is two guitars in this song. It's not layered, because it's live. Buzz?

Does anyone else think You Lied is one of the best things Tool have recorded? I do, I think the bass, vocals, chorus riff and overall atmosphere create this mood that surpasses the rest of the Salival album (except maybe Merkaba). I love how Danny chooses to sit back during the song and let the guitar and bass show off.

Buzz is indeed playing 2nd guitar in this song.

And although it's a cover, it is a great, great song.

That does sound ace, however be careful of not actually sounding too much like Tool (yes there is such a thing). One of the best things about Tool is that they are so original. Try and maintain your own originality and not become Tool-clones. That is the worst possible thing any fan of theirs could do.
Other than that. Rock on my friend and have a cigar on me :smoke:

... Even Led Zeppelin fans admit that Tool's version is better. It's not that great of a song.

Tools no quarter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zeps no quarter

Now we wait for AJIG to come online and say that I+W is great.

there both good but i just think tool "toolified" the song by giving it the awesome tom groove at the end. but i have to say jimmy paige way over adam jones.

freaks_refuge 04-25-2005 11:14 AM
but i have to say jimmy paige way over adam jones.
I'd disagree, strongly. Adam Jones is a brilliant, creative, original musician, as well as an artist and video director etc. Jimmy Paige is just the biggest thief ever of black music.

clearvision 04-25-2005 11:21 AM

What a legend! My favourite n00b.

Erm 1st of all, I'm not a n00b at all, I've been using these boards quite a while. Secondly, it's very well documented how Jimmy Page stole old blues songs/riffs and credited them to himself. He also constantly re-hashed his own riffs and solos to re-use them. There is much evidence to support this. Dont just call me a n00b before getting your facts together. Twat

Typical MXer/Tool fan. Better than everyone else on the planet without question.

Futuro 04-25-2005 11:45 AM

i agree with joemarsh i love tools work but his guitar playing is nothing special if danny carey wasnt in the band they couldnt survive off adam jones playing guitar.

the only thing i hear that would be hard in his solo's would be pinch harmonics.

i love adam jones's work but the fact of the matter is that jimmy paige is flat out more creative even if that involves stealing theres only so much stuff you can do with a guitar.(kind of hypocrasy)

in 30 years there will be another aenima riff the vocals will probably be political too.

freaks_refuge 04-25-2005 12:02 PM

I dont think you have to stick stupidly hard solos into songs to be 'special' or 'creative'. I think he does much more with the guitar than Paige ever could. And because he doesnt put shredding solos in his songs doesnt mean he cant do them. I've heard that he can (I'm not saying it was a fact, I'm saying thats what I've heard). I think, like Maynards vocals, Adams guitar-work is quite subdued yet still brilliant. Maynards vocals being subdued because he doesnt have much of a range compared to a lot of singers but I think he beats out the competition with how he uses it.
But whatever, disagree if you wish, you've made your point, i'm making mine. Thats what make these conversations more interesting than page after page of 'Tool r liek so awesome coz dey r teh sex' and 'Omg I cant wayt 4 da nu Tool album 2 cum out'

Just. You're both right. Its so un-heavy (english me good), yet brilliant at the same time. Its always good when I can remember sections i liked after a first listen.

I'm seeing a lot of "Paige." The name correctly spelled is "Page."

On Adam Jones, his playing is SUPPOSED to be restrained. Like we've already established, he CAN shred. But who cares? Tool's music sounds better when he doesn't shred and we all seem to love the sound of his guitar.

Does it matter if Adam can shred?

I would rather hear a nice solo then a shred solo (I do like shredding though)
