I have permission to do one and I think that Dr. Jake Destructo also wants to do one soon.

This thread really needs to be closed because every single musician known to man has already been mentioned. Especially Kurt Kobain and Randy Rhoads. Any more posts in this thread would have to be spam unless someone else dies today and is mentioned there.

I totally agree with you but as busy as the mods are, it needs to be brought to their attention a few times to get things done.

Maybe we should have a short break between comps, since last time we had so many stickies everyone complained.

I know, I just felt like posting about it again because all the other posts on it, they probably wanted to give it a while before they deleted or whatever, I do know that they would have to seen a problem with it, they just didnt make action for whatever reason they chose was best.

Uk Jake- What poll are you doing? I don't think I will do one any more because Iai is going to do the modern rock poll, and that's what I was wanting to do.

Believe me, if it is reported once, the mods will realize it's a problem decide if they want to give it a bit, or just close it on the spot. re-reporting it serves little purpose. Don't do so unless you feel there is a praticular user, or group of users that should be banned for actions in that thread.

Okay, I understand now. Thanks for the lesson.

Iai 07-13-2005 06:56 PM

Okay guys, my modern rock band competition. I got some questions for the regulars and the mods. Essentially -

- How do we define 'modern'?
- How do we define 'rock'?
- Do we limit it to bands, or are solo artists included?

I personally think 'rock' should be as broad as possible. It will include metal, of course. But what about punk and pop-punk? I say, allow them. The very fact that this is the rock & metal forum will mean we don't get over-run. And if we define it from the start as being very broad, it'll stop arguments (like Sum 41 - wasn't their last album hard rock rather than pop-punk?) Either this, or we put questionable bands up for debate after the votes are counted, and we can see who will replace them.

Secondly, I think 'modern' should be defined by the debut album, and the cut-off point should be 1988. This includes The Pixies (although they released an EP in '87), Nirvana, Soundgarden, Tori Amos (!), and Fugazi, though it'll exclude a few potential hotpoints (U2, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica). To be blunt, as the list is almost certainly going to feature at least 3 grunge bands, Soundgarden and The Pixies should be included as a 'starting point' of sorts for a lot of modern rock. We could also say '85 and define modern as 'the last 20 years'. Opinions?

And as for solo artists, for me that's a no-brainer. It must be a yes.

brettberry 07-13-2005 06:59 PM

Go ahead and do it Iai you have my support, this could get interesting :)

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-13-2005 07:10 PM

Modern- The youngest band to be included in the CR competition was Guns n Roses, I think, so if you know at what point they emerged, you shall find your cut off year. 1985 sounds good though

Rock- Metal already had their top 100. :fistshake: I don't think punk and pop punk should be included b/c they have their own forums. I doubt Sum 41 would be voted into the top 100 anyways, but since I realize it was an example, I will say that if a band has any rock material whatsoever, they should be in the competition.

Solo- /votes yes

Are you going to have a voting thread, or are you going to choose the top 100 your self? I think you should have a voting thread, but if you already have a list, go ahead and use it.

Oh, I'm not sure if U2 was in the CR competition, but if they weren't they should be in this one, as they're sound is very modern rock.

Prioritie number one for me is no metal though. I konw there will be some overlap as to whether a band is rock or metal, but we can solve this problem by figuring out if the band was in the metal competition that PIGS ran, and if they weren't in the competition, then they should be in.

Iai 07-13-2005 07:58 PM

Oh man, I forgot about the top 100 metal bands! Great point. Also, thanks for the GnR info - they debuted in 1987, which is partly why I picked '88. Now I have a concrete, unarguable reason. :D Although, U2 debuted long before GnR, so that point is iffy.

Why dont you find a year that U2 was most popular and use that?

Iai 07-13-2005 08:12 PM

Because then you could start twisting things horribly. Like, claiming Jethro Tull are a modern rock band because they won a Grammy in the late 80s. Or Aerosmith are a modern rock band, because I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing is their biggest hit.

Though, they were most popular with The Joshua Tree, which - off the top of my head - was '86. Maybe '87. If it was '86, they couldn't even sneak in that way.

Artists like Sonic Youth and Flaming Lips debuted in the early 80's...what about them?

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-13-2005 09:50 PM

I think it should be artists that sound modern. I know this will complicate things, but yeah, that's really not that fair to exlude those bands. :-/
