As far as I know, it wasn't Gene on the set the other night.....didn't recognize the bands the drummer was from, but it certainly wasn't SYL or Death. Some guy with long blonde hair.

For the record, I think Hoglan is even sicker drummer than Martin.....the drumming on the last SYL album is my favorite in a while.
Hoglan is the greatest walrus ever.

Seriously. The dude's probably as big as his drumset in SYL's live DVD.

Never heard a drummer like him before though...goddam brilliant. One of the best.
No Quarter as in the Zeppelin song?
That's awesome. That's one of my favorite Zep songs and definitely the most Opeth-esque Zep songs (in that it creates atmosphere)
Yeah, everyone came back out on stage for the encore and Per just started playing it on the keyboard and then Axenrot picked it up and then Mendez. They were just playing it as background music while Mikael talked.

It is indeed terrible. I like Yahoo, but I've never used MSN.

So Opeth's new album has been released without a hitch in my country for the first time....unfortunaly it cost me double than you people....gatta wait it out...

That's totally sweet. I would love if Opeth did a full cover of that song, now that they have a keyboard player.

SKoRioN 10-17-2005 03:06 PM

Let me just say, my eyes have been opened.
I used to whore bands like Metallica and would go on about how good they are, how great musicians they are etc. Now don't get me wrong, I still like them and think they are good musicians (well, used to be) but recently I discovered Opeth.....recently I discovered pure bliss.....

After listening to only a few songs I can say my views on music have been changed significantly. That and the fact I want Mikael's babies but that's beside the point....

Anywho, just wanted to say hello as this is my first post in this humble thread. Please don't bully meh :(

Cheers guys ;)

Shattered_Future 10-17-2005 03:09 PM

With a post like that, why would we bully you?

Welcome as well. :)
Just got back from the LA/Hollywood show and it was great! It was my first opeth show so I didn't know what to expect, but Mikael is a really cool guy. He interacts really well with the crowds and gets them going.

The setlist was sweet:

The Baying of the Hounds (my favorite)
When
Bleak
In my time of need
The Grand Conjuration
The Moor
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Demon of the Fall (encore)
Did you actually get a setlist? Or did you remember the songs? 'Coz that set is class. I'm seeing Opeth on 28 Nov. :thumb:

Shattered_Future 10-17-2005 04:45 PM

Where's The Leper Affinity?

And replace In My Time Of Need with Windowpane, and that will be an awesomely outrageous setlist.

strat 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Same exact setlist as S.F.....are they known for doing same songs throughout a tour?
From what I remember of their last tour, they play pretty much identical sets from show to show....so this should be the show we get as well.

Toaster 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Same exact setlist as S.F.....are they known for doing same songs throughout a tour?
Wow, that's the heaviest set I have ever heard of Opeth touring with. Every time I've seen them they always have encored with Demon of the Fall, which is awesome.

Looks like they dropped Leper in favor of Bleak. Love both songs, but I'm so glad they're playing Bleak. Would I be wrong saying before this tour they never played Bleak live?

ok lateralus 10-17-2005 04:48 PM
Its one of their best, IMO.
Yeah, well the main complaint i have is that the title track is unmemorable. But i should listen to it more i guess. I used to not care for Orchid too, then I listened to it a lot, now I love it
Where's The Leper Affinity?
More importantly, where's any song from Orchid or Morningrise? I'd love to hear them play at least one song live from either album. I wonder what To Bid You Farewell sounds like live? That would be so badass!

Shadows 10-17-2005 04:50 PM

How could you not care for Orchid!!?? I think it has the best acoustic stuff Opeth's ever done.

I'm still on the fence which I'd rather hear though...

Bleak I'm really getting into lately, but The Leper Affinity was my first real experience with uberheavy Opeth...

I wish they'd play both.

No, I really wish I could just GO to the goddamn concert.

EDIT: It would be awesome if they played Forest Of October as well.

I'm pretty sure they played it at a few shows last tour....not at the one I was at though.

I can't wait!!!!

That's why I prefer Bleak. It was the first ever Opeth song I heard and the one that really sold me on them. So Hearing that one, for me, would be stellar.

Shadows 10-17-2005 04:59 PM

By Flynn's request, I'm listening to Blackwater Park again for the first time in a year or so.

All I've heard is the first half of Dirge for November, but all I can say is

Well, I think it's the weakest on the album, so that's really saying something.

...yet you're using the cover of it as your avatar?

NP: The very beginning of Bleak

That's even more :eek::eek::eek: than the last song.

Thats one of the bands best songs, IMO. No other song has the power that one does, let alone awesome riffs/vocals/lyrics... the goosebumps I get hearing the last line...

yeah, I'm going to listen to the whole album again tonight. I've only heard the whole thing like 3 times anyway, so that makes sense because no opeth album (besides maybe damnation i think) i immediately "got" on the very first couple listens.

Darkness 10-17-2005 05:21 PM

Listen to the last 2 songs in bed when your first going to sleep... trust me... :p

Hah i will, Opeth can be great nighttime in bed music
Btw, how long is your copy of the Funeral Portrait? I'm just wondering because mine (its an "illegal" copy..or mp3) is around 2 minutes... seems like it would be longer..?

Darkness 10-17-2005 05:25 PM

Should be around 8. Go buy it dude.

Opeth can be the best bedtime music as long as you are in complete darkness and don't try to fall asleep :D. I did that with Morningrise and it was the best hour of music in my life.

I may get to go to Spain this summer. The very first thing I saw was that there was an entire day dedicated to relaxing at a beach. A sunset/sunrise/full moon on a beach would be surreal while listening to Opeth.

Kaiwaz 10-17-2005 05:33 PM

I just got done listening to every Opeth album starting with Orchid, and ending with Ghost Reveries. 7 hours and 47 minutes of Opeth...I'm exhausted.:amaze: It's good music to listen to while playing Texas Hold'em and drinking Budweiser. :D
