Fantastic Damage is overstuffed and it is obvious. I could see saying 'I'll Sleep When You're Dead' is a 5/5, but i wouldn't agree. more reasonable though.
I completely disagree... ISWYD is also a 5/5 for me, but I like FanDam better. Look at the years they were made... 2002 vs 2007... I mean, for beats of that level to be made in 2002 is quite an accomplishment. I really don't see how it's overstuffed; the mixture of ambience, noise, industrial, and boom-bap is perfectly combined. |
For an album in 2002, the beats aren't that much of an accomplishment. I mean, Dr. Octagon and Endtroducing came out in 1996. The Future-Primitive Sound Sessions started in 1998 or 1999. What El-P did with Fantastic Damage shouldn't be any surprise.
|
i understand your reasoning completely. but, ground-breaking accomplishments are never expected, to be honest... endtroducing, dr oct, deltron, fandam... it's an impressive progression any way you look at it.
|
I'm not sure how groundbreaking Fantastic Damage was though. To me, it's cut from the same cloth as Funcruscher and Cold Vein. Though, for the most part I don't really get that into beats. I can only think of 5 albums where I got really excited over the beats I was hearing.
|
im the opposite... cant get enough of sick beats, even if the mc is mediocre.
vs coflow and cold vein, id say el-p progresses a ton as a producer, basically cause he has full artistic control over the composition. also, cold vein is a bit more sparse/minimal and a lot more atmospheric. then again, im pretty biased as i love fandam, so take from it what you will i suppose. |
i like fantastic damage it is just too long. i'll say it surely had an impact, but i do think 'The Cold Vein' was kind of the album that got El-P's production style heralded amongst white kids / people not paying attention to rawkus.
|
Cold Vein was too long, too.
|
i guess they're pretty long albums. but they're long, awesome albums.
i'm not terribly familiar with the impact of cold vein, but it's definitely different from anything around in that time frame. |

lol el-p is white...and wtf does race have to do with anything? |
i mean Cold Vein was kinda the album that brought Def Jux to the mind of the pitchfork / indie crowd. Cold Vein was the album that basically made El-P "hip". before that he was just another rapper, in most Animal Collective fan's eyes.
|
el-p is definitely hipster accessible... but i dont think he's actually trying to appeal to that group of people.
|
me either. i'm just saying Cold Vein is the one that did that so if you are going to hold one in esteem because of its contribution Cold Vein should go over FanDam
|
with respect to critical contribution, yes then, that makes complete sense. i was only saying that cold vein is pretty much a completely different genre from his other stuff and doesn't characterize his style.
|
New MF Doom track is up, it's got kind of a cool beat but it's a little boring

I think Premier has amazing beats on Step In The Arena, but I am blown away by Premier's beats on Living Proof because of how awesome it sounds altogether. I don't find many albums where the production blows me away. Probably only Living Proof, Center of Attention, Doom, Razah's Ladder, and Blazing Arrow I'd fit into that category. |
i find myself being drawn into hip-hop / rap mainly because of the beats. while i like lyrics it is hard for a twenty year old that lives in the woods to relate to black people talking about city issues.
|
Hello, everyone. Would anyone here like to give me a few recommendations as to a few artists (outside of Ninja Tune and Warp) who produce good, techno influenced rap that I'd be able to make a few good techno-to-rap/rap-to-techno DJ transitions with?
|
Yo Em's album is supposed to be dope ! is anybody else waiting for it ?
|
based on his last couple and his recent track, no im not really looking forward to it.
looking back on rams list of artists a few posts ago... man there's so much more i need to listen to. ive only been really into hiphop for a couple years now, and i feel like all the "underground" stuff i like isn't really underground at all. |
Which list?

I've heard Razah's Ladder, but not the rest. |

Whoa, you haven't heard Blazing Arrows? That's pretty shocking man, it's about as classic as hip-hop's been in the 21st century. For a lot of guys on here it was one of their very first rap albums.
|
thanks rams, i'll check them out. yeah, never listened to blackalicious... like i said, just really have been getting into hiphop for about 2 years now. i didn't really even know about organized konfusion until i heard about them from someone here.
i grew up liking 90s grunge, post grunge, raprock, deftones, dream theater, power metal, prog, etc. then the hiphop bug bit me. im not too excited about gift of gab... he was horrible on the mighty underdogs' droppin science fiction. |
Well I mean it was big deal on here because there used to be a mod/regular poster called Zappa, and about five years ago he was basically the only person who listened to anything more interesting than Metallica, so everything he liked got people hyped. Blackalicious was one of his all-time top ten, so naturally everybody downloaded it.
So I guess in that regard it's not that surprising, because you've only been here a little while. I didn't hear OK until about 18 months ago and I did the exact opposite to you; I listened to nothing but rap until I was about 16. |
every1 wuz on alex's nutzzz
